Last week we spoke about the reasons why you should use dashboards (take action!) and how you should structure them. This week we take a closer look at what you should do on the dashboard itself—what to think about when designing the actual widgets that display your content. What are your experiences and best practices/tips for aspiring dashboard designers? Leave them in the comments below. I have a love/hate relationship with PoCs/PoVs/Pilots in BPM. They're very important and also often done poorly to the detriment of all involved. I took a walk around Iceland and pondered this question for What's Your Baseline? - do these processes really need to be this cumbersome. I'd argue: no. The big point here is that companies vastly underestimate the cost of software evaluations. 🤵 Employee time is undervalued, undercounted and negative knock-on effects are often not part of the equation (like lowered engagement and ultimately turnover). When you force people to undergo an arduous task with questionable value, they feel it, it's expensive, and you don't necessarily get a better result. 🤝 Vendor relationships are barely a consideration. I know they're "just the vendor", but if you DO choose them, you're signing up for a relationship that *should* be built on trust and mutual respect. Starting that relationship out with a grueling multi-stage evaluation is setting yourselves up for a much poorer relationship, and that has real tangible costs. Maybe they don't send that free strategic consulting. Maybe you don't get the #1 CSM. Maybe they audit your license usage more frequently. There are many reasons to keep this friendly, and forcing them to burn a bunch of THEIR employee time unnecessarily isn't easily forgotten. 🚅 Momentum is an incredibly valuable resource, but hard to measure. And yet, everyone feels it. Big promises, lots of excitement, months of waiting. Not a good look, and people move on, focus elsewhere, and suddenly your project is scrambling for key people before it even gets started. So keep your evaluations tight, short, focused, and collaborative. Shortlist extensively so you have fewer choices, recognize what's a 'must have' vs. a 'nice to have', and time-box it all, so that you're forcing action and decision. That way, everyone wins! By now the novelty of #AI has worn off. And just like with other technologies, just a few people use it on a bigger scale (almost everyone can read, but why are just a few writing books?). And even then we make the same mistakes over and over—implementing technology without thinking about the underlying foundation … the process. And, like in the past, we miss out on the opportunity to create something new and better. This is something that our current guest, Dr. Volker Stiehl, wants to change with his “Progressive BPM” approach. So many of my friends are at the #AAPM All about Process Management conference, and I wish them well! Looking forward to many videos from Roland and the What's Your Baseline? crew - keep your eyes peeled for that! It's got me thinking back to the wonderful time I had at the SAP Transformation Excellence Tour Osaka, and some of the great interviews I did there, including with Taro Sano, who had real insight into the challenges facing their customers for SAP Signavio SAP LeanIX - in particular, that organizations tended to have a strong IT team, with deep background in understanding IT challenges... but the bench wasn't so deep on the business side. Bringing EA and BPM together - now that's a real goal! Watch along on the What's Your Baseline? YouTube! https://lnkd.in/g6Wa8Kkh

I love LOVE business process. And maybe that's the problem... 💔 See we #BPM people can sometimes be our own worst enemies. As we nerd out about what we love so much (and deservedly so), we lose the thread, and lose our audience in specialized terminology and technical solutioning. 🤖 Instead, as a group, I would argue that we need to learn to be better communicators of *value* to the organization and stakeholder, rather than proud of our domain-specific achievements and knowledge. ✨ Max LÜPERTZ talks about that a lot as well - Solution Engineers who proudly show off the polished tech demo as the client falls asleep. Now multiply that across all our channels with all our opportunities, and you've got a real disconnect in the making. 😴 Hear more about it on this edition of TL;DR BPM, live on What's Your Baseline? YouTube (https://lnkd.in/gVjCG-jQ). And hey, if you've got an idea, gripe, or thought piece, let me know. I'd love to feature more voices talking about what we love (sometimes too much!). 🎤

We are living in “interesting times” and things feel to move faster than ever—it definitely is in the IT/AI space. But what does that mean for us process professionals? Well, our guest in this week's episode—Dr. Volker Stiehl—has some ideas about that and we spoke with him about how "process" can be THE missing element in creating new value and products in the future. How often have you seen that someone (a consultant?) put together a screen full of widgets and told you that this is all you need to manage your business? And you were lost in all the shiny things and didn't know where to look, let alone what to do with it? This is the equivalent of the “slide docs” that we have seen in business for decades now. Instead of using visualizations to support the main character (you!) in a presentation, we see a dump of information and let the viewer figure out things. And that is the same with dashboards (minus the speaker and the important voice-over that might give some sense to the gobbledygook that you see on the screen). In this week's Substack Roland is looking at what it takes to create a good dashboard. This first part (of two) discusses the position that dashboards have (compared to other communication like presentations or reports), the setup that you should have—the most critical question if for whom the dashboard is. And then we look at the structure and story that your dashboards shall tell. BPM isn't just about process maps. Join J-M and Roger Tregear for a provocative look at the 7Enablers of BPM, and why great process improvement can still fail when the organizational pieces aren't in place. But it doesn't have to. Seven elements. One system. One catalyst: you. October 20, 2026 8 AM PT | 11 AM ET | 5 PM CEST The 7Enablers of BPM #BPM #BusinessProcessManagement

One thing that has become clear is that we need to change how we do things. And no, I am not (only) talking about using AI for process automation, but moreover I am speaking about the thinking behind the use of “process” for more than just optimization. — How do you apply “process” (what you currently do, what you should do, and what new things you can do) to new products? — How do you expand the perspective and objectives of your process group? — How do you, to be very blunt, make money in the future? These are all questions that we discussed with Dr. Volker Stiehl in our current episode of our podcast.
