Aaron Sweeney liked thisAaron Sweeney liked this🥹 I’ve spent years teaching leaders how to navigate fear. But I didn’t expect to be tested like this. Over the past 10 days, my husband and I have been walking through something that has changed us forever. Our son (Cole) experienced a near-fatal accident during a severe mental health episode. He is currently in the hospital recovering from multiple severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. There are no words to fully prepare you for walking into an ICU and seeing your child like that. And yet… here we are. What has struck me the most in these past days, has been the humanity inside of healthcare. The nurses. The doctors. The quiet moments of care that most people never see. 👉The nurse who instinctively dimmed the lights, cooled the room to help his body regulate through his severe and unbearable withdrawal. 👉The hands that adjust, monitor, and protect him around the clock. 👉The conversations that that comforted us with deep compassion. And one moment I will never forget… A CNA (Tammie) sitting with my son, caring for him as if he were her own, who later shared with me that she lost her daughter to complications from addiction only a year ago. Two mothers. Standing in the same room. Connected by love, pain, and something much bigger than either of us. That moment changed me...we hugged all day. We prayed and we cried again. And at the same time… we have been surrounded by a level of support that is hard to even put into words. The Bluebird community--my peeps.Bluebird Leaders 💓 Friends who have reached out in ways big and small. Clients who have sent DoorDash gift cards so we didn’t have to think about meals. People starting prayer circles, lifting our family up when we didn’t have the strength to do it ourselves. We have felt it all. And it has carried us. And in the middle of all of this… I’ve come back to the work I teach every day: Fear, in moments like this, doesn’t look like panic. It looks like: • wanting answers you don’t have • trying to control outcomes you can’t • bracing for what might happen next And everything in you wants to resist it. But what I’ve been reminded of—viscerally—is this: 👉 The way through fear… is presence. Not in controlling it. But in grounding yourself in what is true right now. And right now, for us, that looks like a squeezed hand, a nod yes when I ask him if he knows its mom by his side. Mental health & addiction are not separate conversations. Addiction is often not the root issue. It’s the coping mechanism. We've lived it. And when we don’t see that clearly… we miss the full picture. We are taking this one day at a time. There is still so much we don’t know. But we are starting to see moments of progress… and right now, that is enough. If you feel called, please keep my son in your thoughts & prayers.
