America Baez liked thisAmerica Baez liked thisRetirement 3.0 After teaching my last class at DePaul University, I have decided to retire from teaching after 5½ rewarding years to focus on other activities, including golf, pickleball, and new adventures. Teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. I truly enjoyed interacting with my students and learned a great deal from them over the years. I will miss our classroom discussions, as well as the many laughs and memorable moments we shared. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to William (Bill) Seithel, who connected me with the DePaul administration when I was looking to begin teaching. I would also like to thank the faculty and staff at DePaul University for their invaluable support throughout my time there. It was a wonderful experience and one that I will always look back on with gratitude and fond memories.

America Baez liked thisAmerica Baez liked thisLast Friday was such an exciting day for the NEIU Foundation Board! 🎉 Right after voting to adopt our new five-year strategic plan, board members toured the simulation lab for NEIU's new Master of Science in Nursing, Entry to Practice (MSNEP) program, opening in Fall 2027. It is truly a sight to see! Every detail has been thoughtfully designed around NEIU's student population and our mission to serve the underserved. The need is real: roughly half of Illinois' nearly 195,000 RNs are over 55, and more than a quarter plan to retire within five years. NEIU, with its diverse, first-generation, and working-professional students, is uniquely positioned to help fill that gap with nurse leaders who reflect and care for every community in culturally responsive ways. Thank you to Gretchen LaCivita, Executive Director of the MSNEP; Alexandra Rodriguez, Director of Simulation; and Colin Winkelmann, Simulation Technician, for showing us around. We can't wait to see the first cohort in this space! If you’re always brought in after the decision, you’re being positioned as support, not strategy. I read a recent article by Ashleigh Koehler, CCWP/CSOW at Staffing Industry Analysts, and it reinforced something many contingent workforce leaders know but don’t always confront: the role has evolved faster than the influence. CW leaders are expected to own risk, compliance, cost, and increasingly technology outcomes, yet they're still too often brought in after key decisions are made. Then CW leaders are asked to operationalize them, defend them, and absorb the fallout. That’s not a capability gap. It’s a positioning choice. Seats at the table aren’t awarded because programs run smoothly. They’re earned when leaders show up early, challenge assumptions, and insist on being part of decisions they’ll ultimately be accountable for. Sometimes, leadership is simply saying out loud: "If I own the outcome, I need to be in the room when the decision is made." For CW leaders waiting for an invitation, this is it. Elevating our impact requires stepping forward, not standing by. I am part of this community of executive Black women who have felt the impact of widespread corporate restructuring, where HR, DEI, and leadership roles once held by us were diminished or dissolved under the guise of “strategic change.” The truth is, too many talented, brilliant, credentialed Black women have been displaced, and the silence around it has been deafening. That is why I am pleased to stand with The Black Women Executive Human Resource LeadHERship Collective Society as we launch Career Transition Services for Executive Women. This program serves as a bridge, providing executive women in transition with the space, strategy, and sisterhood they need to rise again with clarity, confidence, and community. We are calling on experienced executives, certified coaches, and senior HR/talent leaders to serve as Volunteer Executive Career Transition Coaches, to help women rebuild their professional presence, reignite their purpose, and reclaim their leadership voice.
