Is KVM the Right VMware Exit? Proxmox, a popular KVM-based VMware alternative, appeals to administrators because of its low cost. The interest is understandable. KVM has matured, the ecosystem continues to grow, and Proxmox provides an accessible interface that fits well with teams that have deep Linux experience. The challenge starts when teams realize that leaving VMware is more than swapping hypervisors. It influences every component of the infrastructure. When Proxmox is viewed through that lens, as a complete platform rather than as a hypervisor, problems emerge. Each subsystem operates independently, and the burden of alignment falls on the operator. Different teams develop each major component that Proxmox manages, and follow their own configuration, update, and recovery expectations. The Proxmox GUI attempts to create the appearance of a unified system, yet it cannot overcome the separate behaviors of the components beneath it. As clusters grow, that independence becomes more apparent, and administrators are responsible for keeping these layers synchronized. This raises an important strategic question. Is the hypervisor the focus of the VMware exit, or is the broader platform the real decision? A system that governs compute, networking, mobility, availability, and protection through a single infrastructure OS delivers a different experience than one assembled from independent parts. Our latest blog examines this distinction in more detail. It provides a framework for evaluating whether KVM, Proxmox, or a more integrated platform is the right path for the next stage of your virtualization strategy.

Sanjay Poonen’s recent conversation highlighted an important shift. Autonomous agents are moving fast, and identity, audit, and recovery controls need to advance just as quickly.
