Meet my friend and colleague Emma RaszmannBen Thacker reposted this🚀 Emporia Employee Spotlight We’re thrilled to shine the spotlight on Emma Raszmann, a passionate and innovative member of the Emporia engineering team. 🎓 From Biomedical Dreams to Power Electronics “I originally wanted to study biomedical engineering,” Emma shares, recalling a pivotal 30-minute talk during her time at the University of Pittsburgh. “A professor’s overview of electrical engineering changed my mind. The wide range of applications and the problem-solving involved really excited me.” Her hands-on journey began with co-op experiences at Eaton Corporation, where she explored power management technologies, and undergraduate research with a power electronics group. “I had a Ph.D. student mentor who just threw me into it. I loved the constant problem-solving and how much it relies on electrical engineering fundamentals—it kept my brain moving. Once I experienced power electronics, I was hooked.” ⚡ Driving Sustainable Innovation “This job ties everything together for me. I’m excited to be part of an evolving industry and to apply the skills I gained as a graduate student in power electronics.” Her current focus? Bi-directional charging, a technology poised to revolutionize energy management. “Our grid is aging, but bi-directional charging helps destress it during peak demand by letting homeowners use their car batteries to support the grid. It has been the most exciting, fulfilling, and "electric" chapter of my career. A big part of that comes down to our founder and CEO, Shawn McLaughlin, a true visionary who has challenged me to rethink what marketing can be in an agile, AI-native organization. He has empowered our entire team to push the boundaries of what's possible and approach every problem with imagination and ambition. Also, working alongside brilliant engineering minds and top tech talent has made me up my game, changed how I think, and reframed my sense of humor :) Emporia is building something that is more important now than ever. Ben Thacker liked thisBen Thacker liked thisI spent over two decades watching utilities struggle to keep up with demand they could see coming for years. Permitting, financing, construction, interconnection: from groundbreaking to first kilowatt-hour, you're looking at the better part of a decade. That was manageable when demand grew 1% a year. It isn't now. Goldman Sachs projects data centers could drive 3% annual demand growth through 2030. The interconnection queue has 2,000 gigawatts waiting for approval. Gas turbines are backordered through 2028. The build timeline and the demand curve aren't going to converge. The conversation keeps defaulting to the same answer: build more. More plants, more transmission, more copper and concrete. But the fastest, cheapest path to serving AI's power appetite runs through homes that already have solar panels, EV batteries, and smart energy systems, not through a decade of permitting. A 400-megawatt Virtual Power Plant costs $43 per kilowatt-year to deploy. A gas peaker plant costs $99. The distributed answer is less than half the cost and can be online in months, not years. We've been building toward this at Emporia for eight years. The urgency of the moment has finally caught up. Not only did the the caliber of conversations with utilities, industry stakeholders, and device partners leave me inspired to continue to drive adoption and expansion of battery VPPs, I also had so much fun with familiar and new faces. Special shout out to Chip Silverman , Tamara Sinensky, and Ross Thevenot for participation on our panel and providing expertise and insight into scaling battery VPPs. Also to Daniel M Cooper for kicking Doug Middleton , Maurice Kaiser and my butt at tennis after a long night of karaoke!! Thank you to all the EnergyHub team who made this event such a success!! Ben Thacker liked thisBen Thacker liked thisThe world changed last week. And I'm not being dramatic. Opus 4.6 and Codex 5.3 dropped on the same day. I now have two AI agents working together. One handles my calendar, email, and scheduling. The other acts as my chief of staff—coordinating projects, managing handoffs, and even debugging the other agent when it screws up. They communicate via Discord. They share a Kanban board. They hand work back and forth. This isn't a demo. This is Thursday. Three months ago, I would have said "we're 2-3 years from this." Now I'm building it in a weekend. Here's what changed: We went from automation (do this specific thing) to agents (figure out how to get HERE). And here's what nobody's talking about: The hard part isn't the technology. The hard part is codifying how your company makes decisions. Because these agents need your institutional knowledge. Your decision frameworks. Your "here's how we handle that" wisdom that lives in 100 brains but nowhere on paper. We're spending more time writing down "how we think" than building tools. And THAT's the real moat. Not the AI. The organizational knowledge architecture. If you're not documenting your decision-making frameworks right now, you're going to get lapped. Not by AI companies. By companies that taught AI how they work.
