Brian Morin shared thisSoteria licensed technology from Rutgers University for a reticulated metallized polymer current collector--essentially combining our MPCC technology with laser patterning to give a current collector that can be embedded within an electrode, rather than serving as a rigid substrate on which the electrodes are forced to expand and contract, creating significant stresses at the interface with each charge and discharge. The result should be a safer, more durable and damage resistant battery. We'll be working with our consortium to scale this up and make it available both as a product and for license through our IP Exchange. Brian Morin shared thisBattery temperature is often viewed as a single thing, but heat is generated locally and can dissipate unevenly. This can lead to hot spots, which may worsen over time. Brian Morin shared thisWe've been working with a British defense contracting company, QinetiQ, to implement a technology they developed to provide advanced warning prior to a battery pack thermal runaway. It works by having a signal molecule coated on the batteries and other pack materials that is solid at room temperature, but evaporates or sublimes at a temperature where a signal is needed--in this case, 80-100 C. It is so much better than discrete temperature sensors working on trigger thresholds. Read below. I also created a video explanation, which I'll link in the comments. Brian Morin shared thisOne surprising fact from the article below was that in an Erie Insurance claims survey, fires started by lithium-ion batteries had an average claim value of $222,000, compared to $73,000 for fires caused by all sources. The reason they share is that the speed at which lithium ion battery fires start and accelerate is much faster than other sources. Read more in the article below. Jennifer Barrows It should improve the life of the battery by slowing down the degradation of the electrodes themselves. This will improve safety as the battery ages. For disposal, it will improve the safety, which should reduce the number of dumpster and trash collector and landfill fires that are due to lithium ion batteries.

Brian Morin liked thisBrian Morin liked thisAs my 8-week internship as a Legislative Intern in the office of Congressman Carlos Giménez comes to an end this week, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on it. During my time in the U.S. House of Representatives, I researched policy issues, attended briefings and committee hearings alongside the Congressman, and drafted memos and communication pieces. It gave me a real understanding of how legislation actually moves, from an idea to a bill to a law, and what the day-to-day work of representing a district actually looks like. None of it would have meant as much without the people in the office. I'm grateful to Rey Anthony for his mentorship and guidance throughout the internship, and to Roberto Lugones, who trusted me with real responsibility from day one and was always generous with his time and advice. I learned a lot from both of them about what it actually takes to serve constituents well. Thank you as well to the fellow interns I got to work alongside these past two months. It made the experience that much better. This internship gave me a front-row seat to public service, and it's only strengthened my interest in pursuing it further. Thank you to Congressman Giménez and his whole team for the opportunity. I'm looking forward to bringing what I learned into whatever comes next.
