Camille Ricketts writes a newsletter about the people and companies she's paying attention to in Silicon Valley. This week, she wrote about Devin Fuller and me. I told her about what we're building at Baseten, the way you do when you're catching up with someone you like. I didn't think anything of it. She wrote that we "jumped in with all four feet" at Baseten. I spent 8 years building Enrich, sitting in rooms with hundreds of CTOs and CPOs, and I thought I understood what people needed. Then I started at Baseten, and the questions were completely different. So we've been building experiences that bring customers closer, help the broader ecosystem learn from them, and lock arms with the sales team while we're at it. Camille asked how we've been approaching it. The answer isn't clever: get to know everyone and what will help them most, fast. When I was building Enrich, Camille was one of the people who showed up in the background when I needed it most. That she's still doing it is the part I keep thinking about. Thank you, Camille❤️

Camille Ricketts shared thisI love hiring for potential, and have been blown away so many times by people stepping into totally new roles and knocking it out of the park. That said, if you're a founder recruiting that very first squad without priors - without the bandwidth to mentor, with limited knowledge of other functional areas - hire people who've done it before. Get intense about seeing receipts in interviews. It's vital these first folks stick and start running the ball.

Limited or no ability to develop their zone of genius within them. And I can't help but think these young operators are burning daylight that could have been used to practice/grow/hone - it's precious time in which talent and experience can compound fast. You have to be at the right place, and counter to some advice out there, it's better to go somewhere without the flash - but with open road, a need for your skill, and ideally an older champion who wants to see you crush it.

Camille Ricketts reacted on thisCamille Ricketts reacted on thisMarketing leadership might be the hardest role to fill and the hardest to keep filled. A few reasons I find this to be the case based on my conversations with founders: 1) "Marketing leader" isn't one job. It's Brand, demand gen, product marketing (and more). Different muscles, different people. Brand seems to be having a moment right now, probably because a lot of categories have gotten incredibly crowded and there isn't much left to differentiate on besides how you show up. 2) Companies struggle to prioritize. The job description asks for many different disciplines within marketing and no one is great at them all. So, you hire a generalist who's fine at everything, or a specialist, and then quietly resent them for the parts they don't cover. 3) Everyone thinks they can do marketing. Nobody weighs in on the database schema. Everybody weighs in on the landing page. And the scoring is asymmetric: weak adoption is a marketing problem, strong adoption is a great product. Same outcome, different owner depending on which way it broke. 4) At early stage, the founder is the CMO whether anyone says so out loud or not. So hiring well is mostly about figuring out who can work inside that, which has little to do with the resume.

For me, that's Cristina Apple Georgoulakis and Camille Ricketts. I don't think Plot would be where it is today without them. They saw strengths in me that I hadn't yet fully appreciated, pushed me to think bigger, and have been some of the best thought partners I could ask for over the last few years. Having women as investors matters because there are conversations that go beyond the business. How to build a generational company while navigating everything else life throws your way. Those conversations have mattered more than I ever expected. Cristina and Camille have been those people for me and I feel incredibly lucky to have them in my corner. Loved seeing you both in SF!!
