Monthly, if not more - we clean up a one mile stretch of Aliso Creek a few miles upstream from our resort. Removing hundreds of pounds of waste at each cleanup (how does an old bike get in the creek??) - We call it a "preventative beach cleanup"! On this Earth Day I celebrate our amazing team for going above and beyond - and being so willing to be part of "doing the right thing". As part of the Beyond Green family of hotels, we - along with almost 70 amazing properties around the world are working hard to make travel less impactful to our fragile landscapes. #beyondgreen #virtuosotravel #sustainablehotels #lagunabeach

Camron Woods liked thisCamron Woods liked thisAs my time here at the InterContinental San Antonio Riverwalk nears to an end and a new beginning right around the corner. I can’t help but to think of my team, majority of whom I’ve worked with over the past 3.5 years, and how much they mean to me. “I may not say this to you every day, but I am grateful to count you as a member of our team. I want you to know that I tried to do my utmost to be the best chef I could for you. I tried to help you develop your skills, grow as a leader, become a better cook, a better chef, and hopefully, a better person. I truly appreciate all of the personal and professional sacrifices you have made over our time together. I’m sorry for those times I wasn’t there for you to help you or guide you through challenges you faced, but I hope overcoming those obstacles helped you grow. I’m sad to see that this time has come. Try to remember some of the best things I gave you over the years, and hopefully you’ve also learned from the mistakes I’ve made over the years, we both know there have many of them over our time together. I tried my best over our tenure together to earn your respect and it was something I never took for granted. I can say without hesitation that you absolutely have earned mine. If I can leave you with one last small piece of advice it’s this. Cook from your heart, trust your gut, whatever decision you make stick to it with confidence and conviction, and leave it all on the plate. It’s your reputation now with every plate that leaves your kitchen. My door is always open for you and I would always welcome the opportunity to work at your side again. I would wish you luck but I know you don’t need it.”

Camron Woods liked thisCamron Woods liked thisA bad process will beat a good person every time. One of the unique advantages of being a consultant is you work for several companies simultaneously – it creates natural points of comparison between organizations. If you believe that a recruitment process is a window into the soul of a company, then it can be illuminating. Perhaps I woke up on the wrong side of my recruitment bed this morning, but of late I have been reflecting on process a lot. And something has always nagged me – references. They are without doubt the most useless step in a recruitment process 95% of the time. Which means 5% of the time, companies get them right. It is an antiquated part of the recruitment process – the process of asking a candidate to provide references. In what planet would someone provide you with the names of people that are not going to support their candidacy? It simply does not happen. And thus, most companies treat it like a step in the recruitment ladder – we have always done them; thus we shall do them. Even though they shed absolutely zero light on the true character and talent of the candidate. But what do the 5% do? One of two things. If any red flags – large or small – came out during your vetting process, focus the entire referencing process on addressing those. Rather than ask about “rehireability” or strengths or weaknesses – conduct behavioral references. We want to know how she will act in this scenario, or we were wondering if you could give me behavioral examples of where he solved a challenging conflict? Be granular and specific with the questions you ask. Or – you can research the candidate and put them on the spot. We share some mutual connections – what would John Smith say about you? 3 years ago, you reported to Michelle Jones – is she someone we can talk to about you? In short do not accept the candidates reference list at face value – ask them if they can speak to specific people. If there are skeletons in the closet – the response will be telling. The past is a place of reference not a place of residence. Spend more time reflecting on how you feel about someone versus using the feedback from someone else to reassure you. But if you do have to do them - the references you do not conduct are the good ones. Trust me. brent@lecoursgroup.com
