At the AI Hot 100 Summit 2026, Charlie Stephens, VP of VC & Startups at Fidelity Investments, asked Vig Sachidananda, PhD, Partner at Gradient Ventures, how the AI transition is fundamentally different from every platform shift that came before it. Cloud gave software scale. Mobile gave software reach. But neither changed what work actually was. The Industrial Revolution did. And that's the comparison that actually holds. 🔹 Before industrialization, human labor was the primary input for almost everything. Mechanization didn't just make work faster — it redefined what humans were responsible for doing at all 🔹 AI sits somewhere on the spectrum of augmentation to automation — the same spectrum that steam power introduced to physical labor, now applied to cognitive work 🔹 Just as the Industrial Revolution restructured society, the nature of work and the kinds of jobs people will have are going to be fundamentally different on the other side of this Nobody knows exactly what that looks like yet. But the backtest of the Industrial Revolution is probably the most honest guide we have — and it tells us to expect a reimagining of work, not just an improvement of it. “The world’s most successful and dynamic places all have one thing in common,” says Cushman & Wakefield’s Charlie Stephens, and that one thing is “direct connectivity to efficient mass transportation.” A prime illustration of this ingredient for success is Brookfield’s forthcoming Manhattan West, which just happens to be directly across from what will be a $2.5-billion renovation of the Empire Station Complex, i.e. Penn Station and the new Moynihan Train Hall.
In the video above, Stephens lays out the formula for the mixed-use mega-project’s future success, which begins with its proximity to mass transit but doesn’t end there. -
