I could argue all day for what my team deserved. My own worth, I let stay negotiable. Nobody came to rescue me from it. One ordinary morning I'd finally had enough of talking myself down to less. Chris Laping reacted on thisEveryone can tell when their boss actually sees them. I was facilitating an offsite retreat recently. Part of my process includes 1:1's with the leader's direct reports. I asked them about their boss. And something unexpected happened. They didn't talk about strategy or results. They talked about how she made them feel. "She notices when I'm struggling. And asks what I need." "She celebrates my wins like they're her own." "When I make a mistake, she helps me learn. I never feel judged." That's emotional intelligence. Being smart with feelings means recognizing emotions as valuable data about your team. Her people don't just respect her. They feel seen by her. Because she's emotionally available. That's the legacy she's building. Not through her accomplishments. But through her kindness.

The corporate theater I'd stopped believing in. I could name exactly why each one ended. What I couldn't admit was simpler. I just didn't want it. And that never felt like a good enough reason.
