Join us tomorrow, Tuesday, September 22 at 11:00 AM EDT for "Using Menu Trends to Grow Your C-Store Foodservice Brand," a partner webinar with Convenience Store News. Adam Friedman of Datassential will show how to turn menu, consumer, and flavor trend data into a clear roadmap for profitable growth. He'll be joined by Philip Santini, Senior Director of Foodservice & Bar for Rutter's convenience stores, who will share how to spot emerging opportunities, evaluate menu concepts, prioritize categories, and build a foodservice identity that resonates with today's consumers. Colleen McClellan liked thisColleen McClellan liked thisNow that the dust has settled (and all of our photos are back), we wanted to give one final thank you to the Finance, People, and Legal leaders who came to our 2026 summit last week. As always, we were struck by the generosity with which you share knowledge, the candor with which you ask questions, and the magic that happens when we're all together... A special thanks to our panelists and presenters: David Joncas (Aeris Partners) who shared some fascinating stats (and perspective) on AI's impact on horizontal vs vertical software. Nick VanWagner, Gautam Kumar, and Brianna Tramp (In Tandem) who modeled candor and collaboration across the leadership team during a time of major company growth. Alex Lieberman (Morning Brew, Tenex) who gave us a practical operating system for closing the AI gap inside a company. We've all consumed a lot of content about what's possible with AI, but Alex helped us map it concretely to our daily work. Spectrum portfolio finance leaders Seamus Hennessy (Lucid Software), Zhi Li (Customer.io), and Zu Daya (Poppins), along with finance friends of the firm Sarah Oates (Amazon Web Services), Vipul Shah (FinQore), Matt Mayer (Ramp), Fay Bordbar (Excellence AI), and Giles Male (Full Stack Modeller) - all of whom dove deep into finance-specific AI applications. Portfolio people leaders Lori Bennett (CINC Systems), Brad Longenecker (RapidRatings), Margaux Miller (SponsorUnited), Jen Fong (Customer.io), Patsy Mangan (Scribd), and Kat Judd, Sean Mackay, and Michael Bagley (Lucid Software), who shared survey readouts and showcased "AI in the Wild." We also had an incredible alumni panel with Emily Markmann, Louisa Cartwright, Alice Wheeler, and Simonne (SLB) LeBlanc. Portfolio General Counsels Dan Johnson (Varicent) and Brad Harrison (Customer.io) shared AI best practices with our legal eagles, while network experts Eric Steinert and Chris Hickey broke down difficult workplace conversations and building trust in the legal function. Thanks for making the trip to Park City — we're already looking forward to our next summit together. cc: Leah J. Colleen McClellan liked thisJoin me for Champagne Specialist course October 3-4 in San Francisco! Comité Champagne Commonwealth Wine School #WineEducation #ChampagneColleen McClellan liked thisTHE CLIMATE THAT MAKES CHAMPAGNE, CHAMPAGNE 🍾 Do you know why Champagne tastes like nowhere else on earth? It comes down to two forces: OCEANIC INFLUENCE Coming off the Atlantic, this brings mild temperatures, plenty of rainfall, and cloud cover that softens the harshest extremes. It keeps the region from getting dangerously cold in winter and tempers summer heat - gentle, moderating hand. CONTINENTAL INFLUENCE From the European landmass to the east comes a harsher hand: colder winters, hotter summers, and a wider swing between day and night temperatures. This is what pushes the grapes toward that signature high acidity - the backbone of every great Champagne. Champagne sits right at the crossroads of these two — too far north for reliable ripening in a purely continental world, but saved by oceanic moderation. That tension is exactly why the region can offer such elegance and precision out of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier. 📍 Join us for our Champagne Specialist course October 3–4 in San Francisco and starting October 19th in Boston ! Just Food

It would be a mistake to view Kraft Heinz as an isolated case, Just Food’s US columnist Victor Martino writes. The structural pressures it faces are widely shared in CPG. For much of the past decade, Kraft Heinz – which earlier this month put its idea to split in two on hold – has served as both a symbol of aggressive cost-focused financial discipline and, increasingly, a cautionary tale for legacy packaged food manufacturers. Its struggles are not simply the result of category maturity or shifting consumer tastes. They reflect a deeper strategic imbalance that extends well beyond one company. In prioritising efficiency, scale and margin expansion over brand reinvention, portfolio evolution and long-term consumer relevance, Kraft Heinz exposed vulnerabilities that now confront much of “Big Food”. https://lnkd.in/egRnsPfS Photo credit: PJ McDonnell/Shutterstock.com

Most Independent Distributors Don’t Lose on Price Most regional food distributors believe broadliners win on price. They don’t. They win on system discipline. Margin erosion typically comes from: • Compensation weighted toward revenue instead of margin • Incomplete category penetration • Territory sprawl • Weak AR accountability • Lost account neglect Pricing pressure exposes structural weakness. It doesn’t create it. If structure is misaligned, margin erodes quietly. #FoodDistribution #IndependentDistributors #MarginMatters

The Open Food Company is bolstering its leadership bench as it kicks off a $3 million seed round to scale its “radically transparent” CPG platform. 💼📈 The open-source holding company has appointed former CAVA Group CFO Jonathan Clark as fractional CFO and tapped creative veteran Matthew Langille as strategic advisor. Clark, who previously guided Honest Tea through its acquisition by Coca-Cola, will steer financial strategy and fundraising as the company eyes omnichannel expansion and new brand launches beyond its debut product, Harry’s Famous Sauce. Founded in 2024 by Renée Guilbault and actor Harry Hamlin, the company positions transparency as a competitive advantage—publishing detailed testing and nutrition data alongside its retail rollout at Gelson’s. With plans to expand into marinades, dressings, spices and more, the next chapter is already taking shape. 🌿🥫 Link to the full story in the first comment below 👇 #CPG #FoodIndustry #StartupFunding #Leadership #FoodTransparency #BetterForYou #RetailExpansion

Are brands risking long-term growth by training people to shop by numbers? This wave of functional NPD is generating incremental value for CPG brands, but the huge prominence given over to protein and fiber claims front of pack could eventually backfire! Imagine your shopper in the aisle... "How much protein in Brand A?" "How much protein in the store brand?" "So, what's the price of each?" Private label has already closed much of the perceived quality gap. And it can copy functionality, combine benefits and compete aggressively on price. So another claim on the pack may buy brands time, but it will not necessarily build lasting advantage. Speaking FoodNavigator I was keen to point out the bigger opportunity for brands seeking to reclaim share from private label - moving from function to feeling, where function is the price of entry, and feeling is the advantage built on top. I strongly believe that brands will not win merely by being liked. They will win by being felt. Thank you to Gus Bambridge-Sutton for capturing the argument so comprehensively.
