Christiana Smith Shi shared thisA recent Bloomberg headline noted that “White men win board seats at a rate not seen in a decade.” Data from 50/50 Women on Boards backs this up: in Q1 2026, “the number of women on boards dropped below 30.0% of Russell 3000 corporate board seats.” Clearly, progress is uneven at best, stalled at worst. That’s why I was so energized to be a Director Coach at 50/50WOB’s Conversation on Board Leadership this week in Los Angeles. Hundreds of women and men, committed to greater board diversity, spent the afternoon in proactive conversation - aimed at identifying and coaching women who are interested in board roles. This kind of personal knowledge transfer and network leverage is priceless, and will definitely be a force for positive change in boardrooms around the US. Key findings from the research, conducted in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis, include experiencing these benefits, on average, versus comparable neighbors: 💰 Approximately $1,800 more in liquid assets 📈 +22 credit score points gained 🏡 56% less-likely to lose their home to foreclosure Ultimately, the report finds that the Habitat model does not eliminate financial stress, but manages risk, reshapes financial trajectories over time, and — when fully resourced — opens the door for homeowners to build lasting security for themselves and their children. Christiana Smith Shi liked thisChristiana Smith Shi liked thisMy parents are in the middle of clearing out the house they’ve called home for nearly 50 years. It’s amazing what they’ve found, including this local newspaper clipping from 1988. (I’m second from the left, with the rather determined look on my face!) What caught my attention wasn’t the roller skates or the wonderfully 1980s hairstyles. It was why we were there. The evening was an appreciation event for volunteers supporting families caring for children with disabilities. At eleven, I don’t remember thinking much about that. It simply felt like another community event. Looking back, I realize that’s because of the home I grew up in. My parents were always volunteering. Organizing. Helping neighbours. Often when no one was watching. They quietly did what they thought needed doing, without fanfare. Along the way, they built friendships that lasted decades. They never announced these as lessons. They simply lived them. And without really realizing it, my sister and I grew up believing that being part of a community meant contributing to it. As we navigate this next season together, I’ve been struck by something else. The friendships, neighbours and community my parents quietly invested in over a lifetime are now showing up for them. And I can’t tell you how grateful I am. People stop by. Offer a ride. Check in. Drop off a meal. Help with something around the house before they’ve even been asked. Living on the other side of the continent, I find that incredibly comforting. It reminds me that community isn’t something you discover when life becomes difficult. It’s something you build, one relationship and one small act of kindness at a time, years (often decades!) before you need it. Thank you to everyone ‘looking out for each other’ 💕

Christiana Smith Shi liked thisAs the new millennium began, Ernesto Castro embarked on an adventure with Habitat for Humanity. That young professional was about to set out on a journey that would take him to many countries around the world: Costa Rica, Mexico, India, Thailand, the Philippines, and many others. Today, twenty-six years later, he serves as our Area Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean. Ernesto considers himself fortunate. The decisions he made throughout his life gradually led him to contribute to the cause of decent housing. He began by gaining experience in disaster management through the response to Hurricane Mitch, and later helped organize the Carter Work Project in Mexico. These two experiences in Latin America opened the door for him to expand his work to the Asia-Pacific region, where his knowledge was challenged by new contexts and cultural practices. Ernesto’s voice represents Costa Rica and our staff members in Habitat for Humanity’s 16 Voices project, a celebration of our 50th anniversary through the stories of those who have been part of our journey. Yeah, it's pretty sad news for luxury retail fans like me myself. Saks Global (the parent company behind Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman) just announced it's closing nine full-line stores as part of its ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. Saks CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck framed it as a necessary step to cut unprofitable locations, focus on the strongest/most profitable spots, invest in better product assortments, personalization, and a stronger multi-channel (online + in-store) luxury experience. But yeah, seeing an iconic brand like Saks shrink its physical footprint like this feels like another sign of how tough the luxury department store sector has become—high debt from acquisitions (like Neiman Marcus), shifting shopping habits, and economic pressures all piling up. The famous flagship on Fifth Avenue in NYC isn't affected, and they'll keep the core Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman locations running. Still, it's a bummer for the cities and malls losing these stores. AI may play important role. Talk more.

Here are some interesting stories from the world of retail for Tuesday, November 25: 👔 Kohl's promoted interim Chief Executive Officer Michael Bender to the role on a permanent basis as the US retailer tries to move past a period of management turmoil and slumping sales. 👨🏻⚖️ Williams-Sonoma has sued Quince, a retailer sometimes known as a dupe company, accusing it of misleading consumers by selling similar-looking but inferior products and selling them for less. 🏬 Belk will unveil a new store concept in December in two locations, including Florida and Texas. The new format will offer a curated assortment in a much smaller footprint. 🦃 High turkey prices and historically low production are creating a critical shortage of the birds for food banks nationwide, leaving many facilities unable to meet demand for holiday meal donations. 🛋️ Home furniture retailer American Signature Inc filed for bankruptcy in Delaware on Saturday, blaming declining sales and increased costs due to inflation and tariffs. 🚚 Ahead of the holidays, Family Dollar is partnering with DoorDash to offer customers on-demand delivery services from about 7,000 of the retailer’s stores. 🚫 Kroger is joining the ranks of other companies in cutting back or ending remote work for its headquarters staff.
