Dasani Madipalli reposted thisDasani Madipalli reposted thisIn my final semester of grad school, I had the opportunity to be part of Kyle Schumann’s research and design-build studio, Design from Tree to Timber: Building Non-Planar Futures. Alongside an incredible team of classmates, we designed and constructed a fully functioning outdoor gathering space within the formal gardens at Morven. Our concept revolves around the picnic blanket / basket, representing an outdoor communal space and translating the weaves, wefts, and warps into a timber instillation that encourages people to gather, connect, and experience the gardens. From early concept development to fabrication and on-site assembly, we were challenged to really think about wood as a material and craft, working across a range of digital and analog methods (such as robotic sawmilling and steambending) to better understand how wood can be cut, shaped, and joined. After many semesters of making scaled models, it’s amazing to see our design come to life like this. Grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this project and I’m so proud of all the hard work my classmates and I put into this project. A special thank you to UVA Sawmilling for providing us with all the poplar and UVA FabLab for their endless support and help during the process. The University of Virginia School of Architecture

Dasani Madipalli shared thisI’m excited to share that I’ve published my first ever research paper “Healthy Hemp Construction—Recreating Common Virginian Building Details with Hemp-Based Materials”. I got to present it in Atlanta at the 2026 International Architecture Research Consortium ARCC-EAAE alongside my coauthor Ryan Macolino By focusing on Virginia as a case study, the research highlights opportunities for scaling hemp construction across other mixed-climate regions in the United States. Virginia’s temperate climate, its established agricultural industry, and the legalization of industrial hemp through the 2018 Farm Bill position the commonwealth as a promising site for expanded hemp cultivation and manufacturing. Incredibly grateful for Mohamed Ismail for pushing us to publish our work. https://lnkd.in/dm6fsYJKArchitecture Students Present Hemp Construction Research on an International Stage | University of Virginia School of ArchitectureArchitecture Students Present Hemp Construction Research on an International Stage | University of Virginia School of Architecture

Students worked across casting, robotic 3D printing, and custom growth chambers, developing prototypes that integrate mycelium, moss, and plant systems within architectural assemblies. Materials ranged from spent cork and hemp to groundnut shells and recycled aggregates, foregrounding biological variability as a design parameter rather than a limitation. Dasani Madipalli shared thisThis year I grew my final project out of plant roots to create a canopy. I combined my skills in crocheting and computation to engineer plant roots onto a wool textile surface. The rooted canopy utilizes a fabrication process that not only sequesters carbon but also produces a harvest of microgreens in the process. Incredibly grateful for Ehsan Baharlou, Dr.-Ing. for his guidance in this studio, and The University of Virginia School of Architecture Fabrication Lab and Sawmilling for assistance and reclaimed wood used to make this project. #Biofabrication #Biocomposites #Biomaterials #SustainableMaterials #Upcycling #CircularMaterials

Dasani Madipalli shared thisACCESSIBLE ARCHITECTURE - A human centered design approach to designing beyond building codes I created a workbook with practical design tools that you can use to identify and implement design changes to make architecture more human centered and less disabling. And then I conducted a public workshop for people from all different backgrounds, architecture and otherwise to see if theory stood the test of practice. And it turns out it did - in under a half hour people changed the way they looked their spaces and identified opportunities to make the world around them more accessible! I'm so proud of this work and all the support and guidance I got from BRW architects. You can access this workbook at the link below: https://lnkd.in/eTTWNsM5

Dasani Madipalli reacted on thisForma Systems hits a huge milestone this week with our first real-world project! Congratulations to the team, and a huge thanks to our collaborators for making this happen.Dasani Madipalli reacted on thisYesterday, Cimbra-designed multi-ribbed slabs were installed in a building for the first time! Four shape-optimized prestressed floor slabs, spanning 35 feet, were fabricated by J.P. Carrara & Sons, Inc. and installed by Pinnacle Precast and Steel Erectors Inc. on a residential project. The multi-ribbed design replaces a traditional 12 hollowcore plank, allocating material only where it's structurally needed. Each slab was designed in Forma Systems' optimization software, Cimbra, which evaluated thousands of code-compliant design combinations against real manufacturing constraints to identify the most efficient section for this span and loading. This is a milestone we've been working toward since we started this work in the lab at MIT. Seeing our slabs go into a real building, carrying real loads, on a real project, is something we've dreamed about. Thank you to Joe Carrara, Mike Weigand, and the team at J.P. Carrara & Sons, Inc. for continuing to push this technology forward with us. Thank you to Jeff Harnish at Pinnacle Precast and Steel Erectors Inc., and of course to the whole Forma Systems team: Sandy Curth, Eduardo Gascón Alvarez, Keith J. Hun ambitie: drijvende woningbouw bereikbaar maken voor een veel grotere groep mensen, ook in de sociale huur. Dasani Madipalli reacted on thisDasani Madipalli reacted on thisThis time last last year, I arrived in Amsterdam on a Fulbright Award (from the Stichting Fulbright Commission the Netherlands) to conduct research about s*x worker-focused and -run nonprofit organizations in Amsterdam. Unsurprisingly, it has been one of the best, wildest, and most transformative experiences of my life. The Prostitution Information Center (PIC) took a chance on me and allowed me onto their team and into their vibrant world. I was there to examine the impact of the PIC's peer-to-peer support, informational, and rights-building initiatives on Amsterdam's s*x workers, but my colleagues and interlocutors taught me much more. They showed me what s*x worker pride looks like, the complexity of building solidarity among a group as diverse as s*x workers, and how both nuance and simple truths too often get lost in the political conversations that affect individuals' safety and livelihoods. To my friends at the PIC: thank you for everything. I'm glad to say that my time in Amsterdam isn't over. This year, I will be working as a Trainee Consultant for HVFC - Diversify your funding: an international consultancy that provides external fundraising support for NGOs and impact organizations. I'm looking forward to learning about how to ensure that organizations have the sustainable funding they need to make the greatest possible impact, and who better to learn from than the masters?

Dasani Madipalli reacted on thisDasani Madipalli reacted on thisTen years ago this month, the Rotunda reopened. I'm still proud to have played a part. This project is what drew me back to UVA. I couldn't pass up the chance to help renovate a Jefferson building, improve the student experience, and return the Rotunda to what it was meant to be: a place for learning, not just a landmark to admire from the Lawn. Thank you to Mark Luellen and Amy Yancey for bringing me home and trusting me to support my alma mater. One detail from UVA Today's anniversary story stays with me. Before the renovation, a survey found that many students had never been inside the Rotunda, and some thought they weren't allowed. Today they take classes, defend dissertations, and study under the dome. That's the part of advancement I love most: a philanthropic gift can transform how students experience the University. To everyone who gave, built, and believed in this project: thank you. https://lnkd.in/eNV5H9aJ #UVA #Rotunda #Philanthropy #HigherEd

Publication Alert! 🎉 I’m excited to share that our work on Design Justice in online courses has been featured in the peer reviewed open-access journal Encyclopedia (published by MDPI). 📖 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/ernu74kX In this article, we explore how design practices in online learning can support fairness and empowerment while centering voices often left out of traditional course design. We believe this work expands UDL and contributes to shaping more equitable educational experiences. Thanks Martha Hubertz my collaborator in chief and to everyone else who supported and contributed insights to make this possible. The work of #SashaCostanzaChock laid the foundation for this manuscript. I’m looking forward to engaging further on how we can embed design justice principles into online learning environments. Grateful that faculty at University of Central Florida / UCF Digital Learning have the opportunity to conduct meaningful research and that Encyclopedia MDPI provides an outlet for sharing our scholarship with the global community. #DesignJustice #OnlineLearning #OpenAccess #Education #Excellence #StudentSuccess!

Every semester I host a “grad student panel” for my engineering grad students. They get to hear directly from peers who are doing similar kinds of sociotechnical work and ask about applying what we learn to contexts outside of the class (eg in their labs, engineering work, and student orgs). I ask all panelists: 1. What does equity-centered engineering mean to you? What is an example of equity-centered engineering you've engaged with? 2. What agency do you have (or do not have) as a graduate student to impact change (in your work, the engineering discipline, the world)? This term I was honored to have Emmanuella Ejichukwu and three other wonderful UM students share their wisdom with my current students. It’s so useful to hear their perspectives! #GradStudents #EngineeringEducation
