Last weeks
#DCDLondon event had a couple of gems worth sharing. Two talks caught my eye - one on power and one on the new
#OCP AI/ML datacenter spec, details below. Great to reconnect and geek out on anything from the massive CDU 's to the tiny diamond coated coldplates.
Power is a major challenge in the
#datacenter industry and this panel: Are Datacenters Becoming Europe’s New Energy Partners? brought up a few good points;
- First come, first served is ending nad shifting to ' use it or lose it'
- Flexibility is key, but it must be designed in from the start—retrofitting is costly. Microgrids and battery storage are emerging as solutions.
-
The European Data Centre Association - EUDCA Developing a transparency framework (due October 2026) to align grid operators, utilities, and datacenters. EU acceleration zones aim to fast-track permits where power is available.
- Collaboration is a challenge;
Equinix and
Digital Realty agree: "We’re datacenter operators, not energy companies—but we must adapt."
LCL Data Centers already generates 40% of its own power, proving the sector’s evolving role.
- But who owns the stack?
Bulk Infrastructure and
Equinix stress the need for clear contracts and third-party partnerships to bridge the gap between datacenters and the grid.
OCP Session: Preparing AI/ML Data Centers for the Future -
Mark Dansie
- OCP’s 0.7 has published open datacenter spec for power, cooling, and structural elements, agreed upon by
Meta,
Google,
NVIDIA, and
AMD. - this hughe!
- Metrics shift: From kW per rack to kW per linear foot (e.g., 25 kW/ft to 335 kW/ft).
- Asymmetrical designs with isle width for hot cold but also to allow for (future) robotics on Datacenterfloor.
- Weight standards: Max 8000 pounds peak weights, 3.1 Ton DC side cart peak weights, and slab floors as a requirement
- Height requirement defined at 5.15 mtr but up for review and community has pushed back on this.
My Takeway: Flexibility is the key to unlocking capacity—but can datacenters deliver it without compromising reliability? The shift from "first come, first served" to "use it or lose it" signals a new era of accountability & business model. Framworks and specifications are key - the OCP's redefinition of Datacenter design is pivotal to drive a much needed OPEN Datacenter build standard across the industry and euDCA's work to drive collabortion of flexible power.
