But it occurred to me recently that it’s hard to know what to make of that number without a much broader comparison. Looking at more than 800 U.S. counties and over 1,100 cities and urban areas around the world, it turns out Silicon Valley is one of the most global communities anywhere. It ranks ninth internationally, alongside places like Geneva, home to major international institutions like the largest United Nations center in Europe, the World Health Organization, and the World Trade Organization. Sometimes a little context can make a familiar statistic much more meaningful. Douglas Solomon liked thisDouglas Solomon liked thisDavid Kelley took design out of the studio and set it loose on the world. I recently photographed David at his home and workshop near Stanford University. The place rises nearly fifty feet into the air, filled with vintage cars, tools, prototypes, raw materials, and the physical remains of a lifetime spent asking one question: Could this be better? David founded IDEO and changed the way many of the world’s most consequential businesses think. His radical idea was also a deeply human one. Begin with the person. Watch closely. Notice the frustration everyone else has learned to ignore. Build something. Place it in their hands. See what happens. His early firm worked on more than fifty projects for Apple, including the Apple III, the Lisa, joysticks, and the mouse that helped bring personal computing into ordinary life. His long collaboration with Steve Jobs helped establish design as something far more important than appearance. Design could shape how a person encountered an entirely new technology. Then David carried those ideas into Stanford and founded the d.school. Students arrived from engineering, medicine, law, education, and business. They left with something more valuable than a method. They left believing they could create. I first met David fifteen years ago. Seeing him again, I was struck by his gentleness. No performance. No need to remind anyone what he built. Just a warm, curious man standing among the beautiful evidence of his life. His legacy is larger than IDEO, Apple, or the d.school. David Kelley gave millions of people permission to see the world as unfinished. Douglas Solomon liked thisDouglas Solomon liked thisThe first thing you notice is the socks. Green and blue stripes beneath gray trousers. A flash of mischief in an otherwise gray photograph. Lawrence Ferlinghetti sat at Caffe Trieste with a book open in his hands, cap pulled low, reading as the room carried on around him. Cups touched saucers. Chairs scraped tile. North Beach moved past the windows. I saw him there often. He would ride his bicycle over from his office at City Lights and join the Trieste regulars. Sometimes Jack Hirschman was across the room. Famous poets, but here they were neighborhood men at familiar tables. Someone would stop to talk. A chair would scrape closer. The door would swing open and admit a stripe of cold San Francisco air. It was always a thrill to see Lawrence, though I tried to play it cool. By then he was so deeply woven into North Beach that his presence could almost seem ordinary. City Lights Publishers, Columbus Avenue, Caffè Trieste, Lawrence on his bicycle. They belonged to one another. People called him a Beat poet, but he never fit comfortably inside the label. He was older than Ginsberg and Kerouac. His war had been different. His education had been different. He preferred the term wide open poetry. He published the Beats, defended them, drank with them, and gave their voices a way into the world, all while remaining stubbornly himself. Lawrence died at home in San Francisco on February 22, 2021. He was 101. Losing him felt like losing a living connection to the earlier city and to the Beat Generation. City Lights is still there. Caffè Trieste still smells of dark roast. The streets still climb above North Beach. But the bicycle no longer arrives. More: https://lnkd.in/gw3Gumgg

With that in mind, I am stepping down from my role at SCL at the end of August, and starting a new chapter at the Stanford Distinguished Careers Institute (DCI) this fall. Looking back, it has been quite a journey so far: - Zenith Electronics (5 years): Financial Analyst - Apple Computer (9 years): Financial Analyst & Corporate Strategy - Charles Schwab (8 years): IT Controller & General Manager - Stay at Home Mom (3 years): TY Skyler D. for that! - Intuit (3 years): General Manager - Stanford University (17 years): Doing whatever was needed to help put "longevity" on the map! - Stanford DCI (1 year?): Taking every single class I was too afraid to take when I was a much younger student (African drumming, anyone? 🥁) As for what comes after that? Who knows! But I do know that the Stanford Center on Longevity is in good hands, with a really talented experienced staff in David Pagano, Marie Conley-Smith, Yochai Shavit, Jackie Macdonald. and a terrific new director David Rehkopf at the helm. And a huge thank you to everyone who might see this, who may have been a part of these many chapters. I can't wait to see what this next one brings.

These lessons inspired this week's article, and I hope they'll invite you to think differently and optimistically about leadership too. Read this weeks article here: https://lnkd.in/dci7RNGp

I recently spent a few days teaching #techforgood for the executive masters program at the Marshall Institute at the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). It was my third year teaching for a total of six hours, and as always, it was a blast! My plan is to try to do more: I want to expand the course and make it free globally. Part of the challenge is to come up with a format that conveys the high level of bubbly enthusiasm I have for the topic! Suggestions welcome: I want to get this going in tandem with the open sourcing of my book in September. Photo credits: Adam Razvi

Douglas Solomon liked thisDouglas Solomon liked thisScale, scale, scale. Grow every quarter, forever, no ceiling. There's no natural system on this planet that supports that. The only thing that grows like that is cancer, and it kills the host. I said that on a podcast the other week, and I stand by it. Every brand story we all cite as a cautionary tale runs the same way. Grow, dilute, lose the plot, then spend a fortune on a campaign about getting back to your roots. Nobody teaches the version where you get to a size you can actually hold and then work on being better instead of bigger. This one's personal for me. What if we optimized for something different? Who's rewarding you for growth you don't actually want? Listen in to more on the age pod/video from my friends at 40 Hearts · Ep. 11 (link in comments)

I’ve been in VC for a long time but 2025 was special. Faster, deeper, more transformative. At redalpine, we backed 10 new companies pushing the frontier in robotics, health, AI/ML, and space - from Flexion Robotics and FORGIS to Magdrive and Level Zero Health. Our portfolio raised more than $2.4B this year with standout rounds from Mistral AI, Proxima Fusion, voize and several others building category-defining businesses. We celebrated FOUR exits, with Lakera, Daedalean AI, Beams, Araris Biotech AG and even welcomed an IPO with Klarna joining the NYSE. It all went by incredibly fast. But more than the numbers, it’s the momentum, the energy, and the game-changing impact these founders are creating that make this year special.

Institutions don’t fail all at once. They fail when design can’t keep up with change. In Davos this week, I’ll be joining the inaugural gathering of the Institutional Research Network, a new initiative convened by The Digital Economist. The focus is not another set of conversations but the patient work of connecting research, markets, and governance so ideas can take institutional form and hold under real-world pressure. Some initiatives are about visibility. This one is about durability. #Davos2026 #InstitutionalDesign #IRN #TheDigitalEconomist
