Emily Ma shared thisWe’re coming up on 28 years of Google “Organizing the world’s information and making it universally accessible and useful”. This goal continues to be elusive - there are 3+ billion humans who do not have access to information because it is not delivered in their language and dialect, because it exists as text they cannot read, because it must be relayed to a smart phone through telco infrastructure they do not have, and because we have failed yet to come together across sectors to figure this out. We’ve been working with Viamo to learn more about what it takes, end-to-end, to reach people in low-resource regions like rural Nigeria and Rwanda. After fielding two million questions, we’ve learned that voice-only AI, powered by Gemini, is surprisingly effective for farmers, parents, teachers, and so many more users who have no other means of going online beyond calling in through their feature phone. My colleagues Hadar Shemtov, Najeeb Jarrar, Doruk Caner, and I share what this work means to us in this video that also highlights the voices of Mukakalisa and Rudasigwa, early users of Ask Viamo Anything. https://lnkd.in/g6vdfrN2 I believe it will be possible one day for every human to access information they need to exert their own agency. But it will take many of us, across many sectors - frontier model labs, governments, telcos, device makers, infrastructure builders, foundations, investors, last-mile service and content providers - working together in earnest. As such, we are thrilled to join the 60+ coalition members, including The OpenAI Foundation, Anthropic, Viamo and the Gates Foundation, to work on the equity moonshot to ensure that AI speaks everyone's language. Emily Ma shared thisCongratulations Reilly O'Hara, James Kanoff and the Terradot for making history, yet again! This is not just a 10X, but a 100X scale in less than three years. This is scale in CLIMATE, and not an AI company, though Earth AI is definitely in play. In February 2024, I got a call from James who excitedly wanted to talk about rocks and open standards pertaining to rocks ... rocks being enhanced rock weathering. This was clearly a bit of a pivot from when James and his co-founder Sasankh Munukutla were working with Professor Scott Fendorf on methane emissions from rice paddies. I was intrigued. At that point, they were piloting a 10,000 metric ton ERW carbon removal project in Brazil. I wasn't sure Google would be interested in rocks, but the co-benefits across multiple industries were too great to ignore. By December 2024, we had come together across Google to do a first-of-kind equity investment and the largest ERW deal every done for 200,000 tons of carbon removal. So, perhaps not so surprising that when it works, it really works, and a MEGATON is now within reach - by adding back their original efforts on tackling methane from rice paddies with alternate wetting and drying (AWD). Next stop - agriculture as a GIGATON climate solution! The transformation accelerates! Randy Spock Sonal Somaiya Kate Brandt Connor Sendel Julia Marisa Sekula Patricia Florissi, Ph. D. Jeff Sternberg Ann Miura-Ko Eva Antczak Erin Beller Jessica Bollhoefer Fábio Coelho Andy KarsnerEmily Ma shared thisLast August, James Kanoff and I were in the back of a truck in Brazil, rolling through hundreds of hectares of farmland and imagining solutions for climate change that could deliver immediate cooling relief while permanently removing carbon, all in one go. One year later, I’m thrilled to share that Google and Terradot have announced the first 1 million ton CO2 enhanced rock weathering deal - and the first-ever offtake that explicitly pairs short-lived superpollutants and carbon removal to tackle warming across all timescales. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gyC98UwZ Through this deal, Terradot will transform Brazilian rice fields into a climate solution, slashing methane emissions via alternate wetting and drying (AWD) and removing carbon via enhanced weathering to deliver a huge, lasting impact - all while benefiting farmers and providing a playbook that governments, industry, and corporates can follow. Here’s why we’re excited: ✅ Agriculture as climate solution. This project reimagines agricultural systems as climate infrastructure. By introducing both AWD and enhanced weathering in Brazil’s rice fields, we turn working lands into an engine for impact that can be deployed at scale across many countries globally. ✅ Proven science. These approaches are backed by decades of research and geochemical data demonstrating their impact, but implementing both will require a deep understanding of both science and operations. The combination of Terradot’s deep technical bench, field testing, and operational experience provides a unique opportunity to showcase how the science can be applied to the field at scale. ✅ A comprehensive approach. Just last week, UNEP made the science clear: beyond CO2 emissions cuts, we have two key levers for limiting warming - short-lived superpollutants like methane, and carbon removal - and we need to pull both at the same time, as soon as possible. This project provides a replicable template for others to do just that in a highly credible, scalable way. Huge congrats to Connor Sendel, Julia Marisa Sekula, James, and the entire Terradot team. And kudos to everyone chipping away at how to scale carbon removal and ERW, especially the team at Frontier and our Ella Hughes. We’re excited to see how much further we can collectively go from here!

Emily Ma shared thisIn March 2022, Sundar Pichai posted “Reducing food waste is an important way we can limit carbon emissions and keep our planet healthy. We're pledging to cut Google's food waste in half by 2025”. It was an insanely audacious goal given Google’s footprint in 50+ countries and 200+ cities and a little over 1000 days to do it. 🎊 By December 31, 2025, Google reduced its food waste by 56% per our 2019 baseline (Reported in the 2026 Google Environment Report, p.80). That’s the magic of setting incredibly audacious, multi-year goals. As humans, we underestimate the compounding effects of chipping away every day collectively at a meaningful, singular goal for several years. 🔥 To get to that big hairy audacious goal and to make it public was no small feat. A small group of us including Stefan Moedritzer and Michiel Bakker had already spent several years prior to 2022 building out a strategy and a plan. Collaborating with a hundred chefs, sustainability experts, foodservice operators, and data scientists, we evaluated and prioritized two dozen potential solutions in sourcing and procurement, operations optimization, user behavior change, physical infrastructure and food recovery, and tallied up the potential reduction of food waste across Google’s global footprint. 🔥 But then came the fear and the dread of committing to anything as a public company. During the closing session on ‘A Decade of Impact’ at the ReFED conference this year, I noted that public goals are only possible because of a huge ecosystem of support. THANK YOU to Gary Green and Amy Keister at Compass Group for ‘going public first’ with their 2017 food waste goal, THANK YOU to Denise Osterhues and Kari Armbruster for reminding my leadership that the media will not penalize anyone for achieving only 99% of an audacious 10X goal, and THANK YOU to the Dana Gunders and the ReFED team for giving us the confidence in implementing the set of solutions and staying the course for so long. Finally, the biggest THANK YOU goes to Kathy Cacciola. She had just joined as Google Food’s Global Sustainability Lead when we set this ridiculous goal. And then she took the baton and ran it to the finish line four years later. We could not have done it without your phenomenal leadership along side every food program manager and thousands of chefs at Google. - - - 2026 Google Environment Report (June 2026) https://lnkd.in/g2xur5ki ReFED Summit Closing Session on 'A Decade of Impact' (May 2026) https://lnkd.in/gNtgNhyG Two Pledges to Reduce Food Loss and Waste at Google (March 2022) https://lnkd.in/gcABpDfs Matt Hood Yolanda Carter Mangolini Helen Wechsler Scott Giambastiani Sam Castro Kate Brandt Mike Werner Nathan Gassmann Sara Burnett David McIntyre Jonathan Kaplan

Emily Ma shared thisRyan Nece, thank you for bringing your incredible presence and wisdom earned through your many transformations (from NFL Super Bowl champion to entrepreneur to investor) to our final Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Seminar session of Spring 2026. And thank you for bringing you mum Cathy with you and telling the story of her urging you when you were in sixth grade to help those unseen be seen. That story stuck with me as many of our students head into graduation this weekend. They will receive their degrees with all pertaining rights, responsibilities and privileges. It is a privilege to be seen, and a responsibility to then help others be seen. Full talk here : https://lnkd.in/ggWjyHt9 A very special thanks to Tess Hatch, my fellow board advisor to the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) and as always the teaching team Ash Wallington and Yuxuan Xia for orchestrating a wonderful series of talks this quarter.

Emily Ma shared thisSitting with the esteemed Ellen Ochoa as she narrated a video of her crew landing the space shuttle sent chills down my spine. Dr. Ochoa has been to space four times, directly helped to assemble the international space station, and led the Johnson Space Center as its director between 2013-2018. She also is an accomplished flautist who was first to play the flute in low-earth orbit. Life has some close calls. We might not have had Dr. Ellen Ochoa the Astronaut if it were not for the undergraduate physics professor who encouraged her to make the most of her intuitive talent for mathematics. Find your people. They will support you in achieving your full potential on this earth and possibly beyond. Hard to believe we're down to two remaining episodes of the Spring 2026 Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Series. As always, thank you to Ash Wallington and Yuxuan Xia and the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) for making this all possible. Emily Ma shared thisElizabeth Weil, thank you again for coming to the Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Series. You were an absolute joy to host and I am deeply grateful for the values you shared with us that you've held true ever since I met you two decades ago. I absolutely love the reframing of life as a giant scavenger hunt, knowing that every person you meet has something unique to bring into this world. You then are masterful at connecting every gem of a person with other gems. Finally, your commitment to your non-negotiable (thanks to your mom role modeling that) and your encouragement to all of us to think of our own non-negotiable was also a powerful reminder that we have to care for ourselves first before we can care for others! Thank you again to my teaching team Ash Wallington and Yuxuan Xia, and the tremendous Anthony Ruth and staff at Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) for making it possible for us to share what we do in the classroom with the world #entrepreneurshipeducation #stanforduniversity #entrepreneurship #venturecapital #foundersEmily Ma shared thisSustaining a successful career at the intersection of operating, investing, and AI means navigating transitions, eyeing future talent, and paying attention to life outside of work. Emily Ma reposted thisEmily Ma reposted thisYears ago, I walked into X, The Moonshot Factory because a Rapid Evaluator heard me on NPR Science Friday and gave me a call. I thought it was a scam at first (yeah right there is someone at a mysterious Google unit called "X" that wants to talk to me?), but it checked out and before I knew it I was at Noogler – Google’s orientation program -- discovering that the propeller beanies are real and not just a winsome joke in that Owen Wilson movie. Today, the Factory released an episode of The Moonshot Podcast where Astro Teller and I went back through what is, in retrospect, the most scientifically generative period in my career so far-- my time leading Project Valkyrie. Astro and I also chatted briefly about the new company I am launching. It was too early to go into details at the time of the podcast's filming, but I’m excited to now be able to talk about the company I’ve founded with Emi Kolawole: Sublimate. A lot of what I learned at the Factory about intellectual honesty, joy as an operational philosophy, and what it means to marry cutting-edge scientific experimentation and discovery to business— is at the foundation of this new venture. Our mission at Sublimate is to make AI that is beautiful, and safe, for individuals to use to depict themselves. We are building the tools for anyone to secure and leverage the generative power of their identity and ideas. We’re building the consent-based architecture of AI image generation that the $4.5 trillion sports, advertising, and entertainment industries have been asking for. The work is exciting, and our early conversations have been inspiring. My team and I are passionate about solving the problem of generating indistinguishable likenesses of recognizable individuals without the dangerous baggage that can come along with trying to do that in a foundation model. We are putting the generative power of AI image models under the control of individuals and creatives and we are giving ownership of what is generated back to who is generated. Emily Ma shared thisTracy Chou is an amazing and outspoken mission-driven entrepreneur. We were so lucky to have her join us at the Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders Seminar (MS&E 472) to talk about her founding and building Block Party by DeleteMe. It was an incredibly personal story - through her work, Tracy rediscovered her own agency and then helped many others do the same. Come hear Tracy's story about how her days at Quora and Pinterest influenced her and what it means to learn to finally believe in oneself before others believe in you. Emily Ma shared thisToday, Stop Food Waste Day, serendipitously falls on my "Googleversary" - my thirteenth anniversary at Google. To celebrate, the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) also just released today the full talk I did with Harry Tannenbaum, my favorite food waste warrior who co-founded Mill. Harry is genuinely one of the most brilliant, funny and joyful human beings I know - and one of the very few who would dive into a dumpster - literally and metaphorically, to transform how we experience what many would consider smelly and disgusting trash. The Mill approach, inspired by Harry's experience scaling Nest, is also one of the finest examples of systems thinking in action. https://lnkd.in/gf6yZ3fv Thank you to Amy Keister and Susie Weintraub, who quietly and humbly started Stop Food Waste Day, for your persistent support of reducing food waste EVERY single day of the year. In this week's episode of Valley of Depth, I sit down with David Tearse, co-founder and CEO of Karman Industries, to explore a piece of the AI boom that rarely gets attention: thermal infrastructure. As hyperscale data centers grow into multi-gigawatt “AI factories,” the limiting factor is no longer just chips or capital — it’s how efficiently we can move and reject heat. We discuss: – How Karman’s Heat Processing Unit (HPU) reimagines cooling – Why thermal management—not chips—may be the next bottleneck in the AI stack – How much additional compute Karman can unlock from the same power input – How Karman thinks about reliability, uptime, and “aerospace-style” engineering – Why data centers are becoming a national security issue ...and much more. David on why now is the right time to solve for thermal management... 👇

New work for LangChain from Play SF LangChain builds the open source frameworks that top engineers at startups and Fortune 500 enterprises rely on to build AI agents faster and ship with greater reliability. We reimagined LangChain’s brand identity and created a unified system to connect its parent brand and sub-brands, while shifting its appeal toward a more technical, developer-focused audience. The refreshed logo evolves the original parrot into a more abstract, geometric bird, symbolizing iteration and enabling agents to “take flight,” with upward motion embedded in its form. This visual language extends into a cohesive set of product icons, maintaining consistency across the ecosystem. The broader design system draws on bird murmuration and AI thinking patterns, using lines and dots to represent the process of transforming complex ideas into streamlined, unified outputs. Forbes published my latest article on what many investors may be getting wrong about robotics. Humanoid robots look like the future. But investing in humanoid hardware may not be. Manufacturing asymmetry is real. Competing with Asian supply chains is not a typical venture risk profile. Outside of companies like Tesla or Amazon, most hardware startups, even unicorns, will face extreme pressure. The long term U.S. advantage is far more likely to sit in embodied AI software and the intelligence layer, not in assembling robot bodies. In robotics, the control point will not be the factory. It will be the mind. https://lnkd.in/gmcVtCa5
