I'm excited to announce New System Ventures' investment in LineVision co-led with Centaurus Capital, and joined by National Grid Partners and other existing investors for up to $37.5mm. At NSV, we've spent years mapping the energy value chain for structural bottlenecks. Advancing grid technologies that better match electricity supply and demand is a critical component to that. This is directly addressed by LineVision’s Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) platform, which combines physics-based modeling with years of ground-truth data from field-deployed sensors to give utilities and grid users a live, network-scale picture of how much capacity their transmission lines actually have, and can offer a broader range of tools to provide situational awareness.  The company has already partnered with a range of utilities - including National Grid - and is delivering results. National Grid reports more than £20 million in customer savings in the UK and enough added capacity to power more than 500,000 homes. LineVision has moved past pilots into real, at-scale grid intelligence, led by an exceptional team under CEO Vishal Kapadia. Optimizing the grid we already have - and directing the capital to upgrade it well - is one of the more consequential, underappreciated problems in energy right now, and LineVision is best positioned to lead it. We are proud to partner with Vishal, Matt Mitchell and the LineVision team, John Arnold and Keith Holst of Centaurus Capital, and Kristian Bodek and National Grid Partners. Sharp rise in demand with skilled labor needs for grid connectivity a greater area of potential constraint than generation capacity buildout. Generational growth in power demand is likely to have broad implications for a labor network already facing strain from aging and a limited pipeline of skilled labor. To meet our US/Europe Utilities teams' power demand growth estimates for 2023-2030, we estimate an additional ~510K US jobs (power & grids) and ~250K EU jobs (power) will be required. This new labor demand comes within a backdrop of an already tight labor market, adding potential constraints to the rate at which power demand can grow. We see the greatest potential labor constraint from the skilled labor needed for electricity transmission & interconnections (207K new US jobs, implying 22% growth), roles that require significantly greater skilling (3-4 years of training) amid an aging workforce. In the US, there are ~45K active apprentices in the energy sector (e.g., electricians, lineworkers, powergrid technicians) according to the US Department of Labor. To achieve our estimate for transmission labor and offset retirements, we believe the run rate of active energy sector apprentices may need to increase by about 20K-30K. While we believe our power demand growth outlook (driven not just by AI/data centers) is achievable, the need for transmission and distribution skilled labor represents a key risk.

Google seriously fearing power shortages, and acquire clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75 billion. Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc. announced on the 22nd that it has agreed to acquire clean energy developer Intersect Power for $4.75 billion in cash and assume its existing debt. This is one of the largest deals the tech giant has made to significantly expand its AI data center footprint.

Google has agreed to acquire Intersect Power for $4.75 billion, marking the first time a tech giant has bought a major renewable energy developer outright. Intersect brings a portfolio of 2.2 GW of solar and 2.4 GWh of storage, with plans to scale to 10.8 GW by 2028. Under Google, Intersect will focus on “energy parks”—co-locating hyperscale data centers with solar and battery storage to bypass grid congestion and accelerate clean energy deployment. This behind-the-meter strategy could redefine how Big Tech powers AI-driven infrastructure. Is this the start of a new era where tech giants become renewable energy developers? 👉 https://lnkd.in/ddNeEHJR #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #EnergyStorage #CleanTech #Sustainability
