Haley Rosen shared thisPeople in women’s sports can sometimes be way too cynical. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen describe this WNBA season as a let-down or disappointment because of a single bad headline or divisive moment. Meanwhile, the actual numbers tell a very different story! —The WNBA just had the most-attended regular season in league history. More than 3.4 million fans came through the gates, average attendance climbed 21% year-over-year, and 180 games sold out. (And we still have a week to go!) —The league also set new marks for viewership, with 45+ games averaging more than 1 million viewers. And yet, for whatever reason, in women’s sports, a single controversy or bad headline is treated as a referendum on an entire league. Please, look at the bigger picture! This has been a great WNBA season. And the majority of potential fans are still waiting to be onboarded. The excitement should feel palpable and the worry kept in check. Women’s sports are reaching scale and still have so much room to grow.

Haley Rosen shared thisWomen's sports have never had more momentum. And the people who feel it most acutely are those who have *lived it* I had the chance to chat with Kerri Walsh Jennings and Jayne Appel Marinelli at Sportico's RISE event in NYC. These are two women who have been on the front line of this tidal wave, going back to their playing days. There's still so much work ahead. But there's something incredibly rewarding about getting to spend time with people who have witnessed every stage of this evolution, and who are still pushing this space forward, each and every day.

Haley Rosen reposted thisHaley Rosen reposted thisLA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games will be the first Olympics in history with more women's medal events than men's. And it already has more domestic sponsorship dollars than the entire Paris Games. With two years to go 👀 Women's sports will be THE story of these games. In 2024, the four most-watched days were all anchored by women's gymnastics. The USWNT gold medal match vs Brazil was also the most-watched Olympic soccer match (men’s or women’s) in 20 years, and it happened during the 11am ET window. The 1996 Atlanta Games made the Magnificent Seven famous, helped launch the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), and catalyzed the current women’s sports boom. 32 years later, LA28 will accelerate the next wave of growth. Plus, there will be lacrosse! (I am biased but 🥍 🚀 ) Just Women's Sports is READY!

Haley Rosen posted thisThis Sydney Sweeney "controversy" is such a nothing-burger... And I really wish we, in women's sports, would retire the playbook of using outrage to get attention. Not because I don't think there are things to be mad about! That playbook just isn't effective. You're not going to get people to care about women's sports by dunking on Sydney Sweeney. Guess what? Sex sells. Always has, always will. Sydney Sweeney and that company wanted to generate headlines. And they did! People can feel however they want about the ad, but it has nothing to do with women's sports. There's so much actually happening in this space, we don't have to spend our time debating how an actress chooses to market herself.

Haley Rosen posted this1.2 million people watched Team USA win the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on Sunday. Another 938,000 watched the semifinal against Spain the day before. Those games were competing with the opening weekend of the NFL, college football and, in the case of the final, the US Open men’s final. And viewership for the championship was still up 158% from 2022. I keep coming back to this: the ceiling for women’s sports is still nowhere in sight. The five most-watched FIBA Women’s World Cup games ever all happened in the last two weeks. And on Just Women’s Sports, we drove 7M+ impressions and 500,000+ engagements on social across the tournament. By all traditional metrics, this is an extremely busy time in the sports calendar. But women’s basketball is still breaking through.

Haley Rosen shared thisAre WNBA ticket prices too high? Does Cathy Engelbert get a fair shake? What percentage of a leadership team in women’s sports should be women? On the latest episode of The Playbook presented by Justworks, LA Sparks President Stacy Johns joined me to answer some of the trickiest questions in women’s sports. This was an incredibly honest and tactical conversation with one of the front-line operators in women’s sports. Stacy’s background spans the NFL, MLS, NWSL and more. She knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level in sports, and I loved getting to pick her brains on the future of this space. Haley Rosen shared thisI had a great time speaking with Kerri Walsh Jennings and Jayne Appel Marinelli at Sportico RISE in NYC. One of the points I tried to hammer home was how much female athletes have historically had to do to support their leagues — and how I see that starting to change. Before, athletes were the product *and* the infrastructure. They were the ones marketing the leagues, negotiating deals, and building their personal brands. Now, we're entering a phase where the infrastructure exists to support these athletes, rather than require them to always be wearing multiple hats. The excitement in the room was palpable. And it's always fun to talk tactics with some legends of the game!

Haley Rosen posted thisjust saw some pretty interesting new data from Nielsen... Sponsor valuation growth across women’s sports leagues since 2022: 1. NWSL: +82% 2. WNBA: +71% 3. LPGA: +51% Total ad spend in women’s sports is up 120% over that same period. What’s crazy is women’s sports, globally, are still ~1/200th of all sports revenue... which is why the real excitement isn’t how much growth has already occurred, but the fact the *vast majority* of it is still ahead of us

For 20+ years, Google has temporarily changed its homepage logo to commemorate historic moments, holidays, iconic figures & achievements. Today I logged in and saw the eight WNBA Playoff teams' branding / colors rotating thru the Doodle again. So fun...and really a nod to just how far women's sports has come. Well done Kate Johnson, OLY, Phil Cook, Colie Edison and team - postseason has been so incredibly exciting!

What I get to see every day is the ambition, creativity, and momentum behind pieces like this — and a group of really interesting, talented marketers thinking big and making things happen. I feel very lucky to work alongside this team, with Arianna at the helm. I’m biased, of course… but I’d keep an eye on us! https://lnkd.in/gBWRZ-cBGeico has one of advertising’s most famous mascots. Haley Rosen liked thisHaley Rosen liked thisWomen’s sports deserve bigger stories and bigger stages. At GEICO we want to grow the fandom. Grow the marketplace. Grow the opportunities for both the sports and the athletes. This week, we tripled down on that commitment: 🏀 We became the Official Jersey Patch Partner and Home & Auto Insurance Partner of the Minnesota Lynx - one of the most passionate fan communities in sports with a culture that inspires loyalty, and a vision for what's next. 🏀 We expanded our relationship with Napheesa Collier. Champion. Entrepreneur. Mom. A leader whose impact extends far beyond the court. 🏀 We welcomed Olivia Miles to the GEICO family. One of the most exciting young talents in the game and a player helping define the next generation of the WNBA. The future of women's sports is being built in real time. We're proud to partner with Minnesota Lynx, Napheesa Collier, and Olivia Miles to tell stories that matter, reach new audiences, invest in communities, and help accelerate the momentum transforming women's basketball.
