For some further wisdom on the topic, I recommend Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey:
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself. Basically, it's made up of two separate words — "mank" and "ind." What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Hans van Alebeek liked thisHans van Alebeek liked thisExcited to share work I was a part of as a co-investigator with lead PI Judy Ford at #UCSF: the first randomized controlled trial of ketogenic therapy in schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar disorders, now published in #SchizophreniaBulletin. What we found: • Ketogenic therapy is feasible in these populations — a critical first question answered • At 1 month, the keto arm showed significant improvements in metabolic health markers, with a trend toward psychiatric symptom improvement • Participants who continued to 4 months showed significant reductions in psychiatric and schizophrenia symptoms, plus improved cognitive performance Our #UCSF team, funded by NIMH and Baszucki Group, enrolled 58 participants in a 1-month RCT comparing ketogenic therapy to diet as usual, followed by an optional extension to 4 months of ketogenic therapy. People living with psychotic disorders face some of the worst metabolic health outcomes in medicine, and current medications don't address the cognitive and mood symptoms that can be most debilitating. Showing that a metabolic intervention is feasible — and seeing early signals of benefit — opens a genuinely new avenue for treatment research. These are early findings, and longer, larger controlled trials are needed. But this is how a field moves forward. Every notebook in this stack represents a conversation — with a customer, a partner, a colleague. I took notes in every single meeting because I wanted to remember. Because the person across from me mattered. AI note-takers are incredible now, and I use them. But there's something these notebooks hold that no tool can replicate: the understanding that our conversation was worth writing down by hand. The action items and next steps were mutual commitments, and formed a foundation for both partnerships and friendships. If your name is somewhere in these pages, know this — you weren't just a meeting on my calendar. You were an opportunity I was energized by, a goal I was invested in, a connection I genuinely valued. Ten years of conversations with customers, partners, and colleagues. We trusted each other with what mattered most, as we built an ecosystem of relationships and delivered tangible business value to all parties. Being there to ensure this ecosystem succeeds is what gave my career its deepest sense of purpose. I’m excited for my next chapter. Nurturing customer and supplier partnerships is my jam. If you know of such opportunities, or just want to catch up, I’d love to reconnect. Regardless, I’m going to spend the coming weeks reaching out and saying hello to those with whom I’ve enjoyed working these past ten years. These notebooks aren't going anywhere. And neither are the connections inside them. Thank you, Coupa Village! And thank you to everyone who let me be part of your journey. 🙏

Hans van Alebeek liked thisFor decades, I've been living on my own clock — whether the metric is years or hours. 🌙🦉 IYKYK. So maybe that's why this Serena Williams story landed differently for me. Nobody makes her play tennis anymore. She has 23 Grand Slams. Nothing left to prove to anyone with a scoreboard. And she chose to walk back onto Centre Court anyway, lose a tough three-setter to a 20-year-old, and look genuinely alive doing it. We talk a lot about "knowing when to quit." Nobody talks enough about knowing when you're allowed to come back — not for redemption, not for a title, just because the game still calls to you. That's the win nobody puts in the box score. What's something you walked away from that's still calling you back? #WomenWinningWednesdayHans van Alebeek liked this🥇 Women Winning Wednesday - On Your Own Clock ⌚ I write a lot about ageism. I'm tired of the math someone else did decades ago about when we're supposed to slow down. So watching Serena lose her first match back at Wimbledon 2026 didn't read as a loss to me. She saved a match point. She took a 20-year-old to a tiebreak. She did it in a pink Audemars Piguet, at 44, after four years away from the sport. I keep thinking about the version of "44" (or "60"!) I was handed growing up, and how wrong it was even then. We're healthier now. We know more. The research on women's bodies is still catching up, but the evidence in front of us isn't waiting for the studies. Serena didn't come back to win a fairytale. She came back because it's still hers. That's the whole point, isn't it? Not proving anything to anyone — just doing the thing that makes your heart sing, on your own clock. #WomenWinningWednesday Emmeline Ventures La Keisha Landrum Pierre Jessica Makolin Trish Halamandaris Sally Mueller Michelle Jacobs Serena Williams Gigi Fernandez Imen Maaroufi Clark Rose Planer https://lnkd.in/gSET38uWA-listers attended Wimbledon 2026 in watches that cost up to $229,000. Hans van Alebeek liked thisWhen you start a company, you dream about the big outcomes. The logos, the dents in the universe. Nobody tells you about the week in Greece. Turns out this is one of the big outcomes. 🚀 P.S. Both the men's and women's champions of the Loka Tennis Open hold the AWS gold jacket (meaning they've earned every active AWS certification). If anyone ever questioned whether clay courts build character, I now have definitive data. 🎾 LokaHans van Alebeek liked this🌎 Remote works. Loka has proven that for 22 years. But once a year we get together to feel what you can't feel on a Zoom call. (Fair warning: long post, but a good one.) A few weeks back, Lokals from Portugal, San Francisco, Skopje, Brazil, Hong Kong, and seemingly everywhere in between met in Greece for our second Global All Hands. One of the most wildly diverse and brilliant groups you'll find anywhere: PhDs, ML and data leads, compliance officers, world-class product designers… hugging and grinning after years of shipping together. It felt like a reunion with people you’ve never met. No post can capture the magic of those few days, but here's a glimpse. Bobby Mukherjee opened with the outsized value of quality and the downside of being an ostrich. After that the ideas just didn't stop. Teams demoed the side projects they had been quietly hacking on. At the AI Genius Bar you could pull up a chair and ship the thing that had been burning at you for months. The design team built a card game to demo Agentic uses in the real world. At our LokaSpeak Festival, people who once would have been too nervous to take a stage stood up and moved the room. We had migration and modernization debates that ran later than we should admit on LinkedIn (a great time, for us at least). Put smart, curious people in a room and this is what they do for fun. And there was plenty beyond the work: The second annual Loka Tennis Open, men's and women's divisions. Full six-team Loka fútbol tournament. Every André, Andrej and Andrés annual summit. Two teammates earned their AWS gold jackets. The same two won the tennis championships. (Coincidence, surely.) On the last night, the whole company gathered in an amphitheater overlooking the Aegean Sea (another pinch me moment). Every emotion, all at once, the kind you only feel with people you've grinded alongside for months, years. IYKYK. One teammate told us the sequel was better than the original. He said this time we made space for the unstructured moments, and came away understanding colleagues' drive and dreams. We couldn't have said it better. Decades of IMs and virtual standups get you a long way. The in-person middle moments build something else. A deeper connection to work through the hardest problems in the most impactful industries on the planet. Some of it doesn’t translate to a feed. You had to be there. But everything we learned and built we bring home to the best work we've ever done. Efharistó, Greece. We’re just getting started 🚀

Hans van Alebeek liked thisHans van Alebeek liked thisSome things don't change. And that's a good thing. Growing up, Panini stickers were a ritual. You studied the players, memorized the stats, and spent every recess negotiating trades like your collection depended on it. "I give you 3 Cafu for a Maldini." Deal. When in college I kept up this hobby and remember a guy outside Rossio station in Lisbon who ran what I can only describe as an informal sticker exchange. No app, no algorithm. Just a guy, a binder, and a market that worked. Fast forward. My 12 year old son has been thinking about business ideas and learning to build with AI. A few weeks ago he started sketching out an app that would let collectors track their stickers and trade with others. The same problem, solved for his generation. What made it special wasn't the app. It was watching him define the problem, go through the discovery process, share it with his friends, and iterate. He built StickersStock: stickersstock.com With the World Cup starting today, he's ready to share it more widely. If you or your kids are collecting the WC26 album, try it out. And if you have a duplicate Pulisic, he'll trade you for it.

Today, I am incredibly proud to highlight an "Emmeline daughter" who just graduated with her MBA from the The University of Chicago Booth School of Business! 🐻💼 Balancing a rigorous MBA program while working full-time is no small feat. To do it while earning top marks and showing up completely for family, friends, and colleagues? That is the definition of a true Renaissance woman. 🌟 India Johnstone's and my journey started this past November with just a nod and a smile at the WHIS (Women's Health Innovation Summit) in #Boston. That casual encounter led India to reach out for a winter internship at #Emmeline through her PEVC Lab course. It was the perfect win-win: 🔹 For India: Hands-on experience in fund operations, deal pipelines, due diligence, and financial modeling. 🔹 For Emmeline: A self-motivated, brilliant mind that pushed my thinking and leveled up our systems. Working with India has been an absolute joy. While I’m selfishly wondering how I will survive without her, I am overjoyed that she is staying "in the family." She is heading into a full-time role with the incredible team at LunaJoy Health! 🩺💜 If you can’t keep top talent at home, there is nothing more comforting than knowing they are moving into an environment where they will continue to grow, catalyze, and elevate every room they walk into. Please join me in congratulating India on this magnificent milestone! The future is incredibly bright. 🚀 Emmeline Ventures La Keisha Landrum Pierre Jessica Makolin Sipra Laddha, MD Jane Y. Hans van Alebeek liked thisHans van Alebeek liked thisI'm a CEO obsessed with operational reality… and I believe in manifesting ✨ I even run (voluntary) sessions with my team. Here’s how to do it: 1. Define the person you WANT to be: Get detailed about what would need to be true. 2. Visualize it: With all of your senses. Really feel what it’ll be like. Get specific. 3. Align: Make decisions like you’re already living in that future. What would that person you imagine do today? Here’s the part that trips people up — You don’t need to know HOW you’ll do this yet. Just WHERE you want to be. That's what shifts everything: Recognizing your agency in life. It’s not pretending circumstances don't exist. It’s also not just “dreaming” and expecting it to happen. It is about priming your brain and lifting attention to where you want to go, not just what's in front of you. Don’t like “manifesting”? Call it an operating plan. Get specific about where you're going — and start moving like you're already on your way. So ask yourself: 👉 What do you want? 👉 What will you change to start living like you’re already on your way there?
