Loved talking all things BaaS last week with Stacy Bishop, Stephen Bishop, and Sarah Beth Felix about how sponsor banks need to think about transaction monitoring. Sponsor banking transaction monitoring keeps breaking because legacy tooling was built for checking accounts. Not for supporting dozens of fintechs with radically different business models. At Unit21, we see three things that actually work: 1. Data must reflect the fintech’s business model. Teen debit cards, cross-border payments, and retirement accounts all need fundamentally different context. 2. One size fits none. Rules and risk signals have to be customized per fintech, not averaged into irrelevance. 3. Risk is shared now. Sponsor banks and fintechs need real collaboration, not handoffs. Post-2023, there’s no hiding from that reality. This is why legacy stacks fail—and why modern sponsor banking needs a different foundation. Great conversations at our WillowTree Ventures dinner with leaders across fintech and AI. A few themes stood out strongly: enterprises are leaning into AI for real efficiency gains, product and engineering orgs still set the agenda, and the whitespace in “boring” industries is wider than most people assume. It’s clear that the next breakout companies in AI for financial services won’t come from the obvious places. Good update from S&P Global on the current state of BaaS for both banks and fintechs, the regulatory actions in recent years, and where we may be heading. One excerpt: The cascade of regulatory actions issued to BaaS banks helped remind the parties in a bank-fintech partnership that "the fintech is a third-party provider to the bank, and not the other way around," Ransom said.

I’ve watched teams focus on individual failed payments instead of the pattern behind them. By the time the trend became obvious, the response options were limited. Seeing transaction behavior at the system level changes how leaders evaluate risk. It turns fraud from a reactive issue into something that can be addressed earlier.
