Jeff Klineman shared thishttps://lnkd.in/grRzGtjd Hot Take: I feel like there's such incredibly great show about Ben Stiller making ads for a soda company here and I respect the work going in to building the brand. But I wonder whether it would be a better, leaner business if the show was the product, instead of the actual soda? One of the main issues with creator-based or celebrity-based products is that the storyline and the product both have to be good -- not great, but in balance -- for them to actually hit and resonate. This is terrific content -- but it dwarfs the product itself.

Link below to vote (you can only vote once but send this along to others!)Jeff Klineman reposted thisThe nominees for our 2026 Pioneer Awards are in, and voting is now open! 🎉 Quick housekeeping note first — we won't be hosting Fall Fest in person this year, and if you already grabbed a ticket, a refund is being processed. That shift isn't slowing down the part everyone looks forward to most: celebrating the brands, founders, and teams pushing this industry forward. So we're taking our NNE Pioneer Awards straight to you, right here 👋 For many of the brands, this is the first time they're finding out they've been nominated by someone in our community — so if you spot a familiar name (or your own!), give them a shoutout when you share this. 🗳️ Vote now https://lnkd.in/e7vAJCzA Voting closes September 18th. https://lnkd.in/em5s8NCq #NNEPioneerAwards #NaturallyNewEngland #SupportLocal #NewEnglandMade

Jeff Klineman liked thisNice! They see it.Jeff Klineman liked thisUncle Waithley was a ginger farmer on St. Vincent. He lived to a hundred, and he made his own ginger beer. His grandson Karl Franz Williams spent seventeen years running bars and restaurants, and before that worked in brand management and innovation at Pepsi and Procter & Gamble. He took the family ginger beer and put a scotch bonnet in it. That is the whole product at Uncle Waithleys Beverage Company. Peruvian organic ginger, ground and pressed, then aged through a fermentation step for depth. Lime juice, turmeric and mineral water with natural salts to balance the sugar. Then the pepper, which is the part nobody else is doing. Most ginger beer competes on how much ginger it can claim. This one competes on what happens a second after you swallow. A deliberate burn is a filter. It loses the shopper who wanted something easy and it keeps the one who was bored. Which of those two is worth more to a brand this size? #CPG #ConsumerGoods #Beverage #NonAlcoholic #BrandStrategy #FounderLed

Jeff Klineman liked thisJeff Klineman liked thisMy brother Sean moved to Ílhavo, Portugal earlier this year. He brought his dog, Grace. Last week I went to see the life he built there. Ílhavo is a small, quiet town, a half hour south of Porto and two hours north of Lisbon by train. Sean is happy. Over the moon, honestly. Watching him walk me through his streets, his routine, his new normal, I kept thinking about how few people actually do the thing they say they want to do. Congrats, Sean. Big respect for the move. I recognized the decision, because I made a version of it a couple of years ago. I looked at Grasslands: A Journalism-Minded Agency® and decided our next chapter was international. Some former colleagues of mine disagreed, but I knew it was the right call. (It definitely was.) Clients in Germany, Thailand, Portugal, the UK and Australia. New regulatory environments, new media markets, new ways of doing business that force you to get better at your job. The bet is paying off. Work takes me overseas now on a regular basis, and the trips keep landing me within reach of family and friends I used to see once every few years. A long weekend in Portugal for business becomes a quick overnight in an ancient fishing town with my brother. Sean moved for the life. I moved the company for the work. We both ended up with a bigger map and more people on it. If you're sitting on a decision like that, personal or professional, the hardest part is the first flight. Obrigado, Sean. See you again soon.

Jeff Klineman liked thisJeff Klineman liked this🚨 I think there’s a very big business to build around a ridiculously good English muffin. 🚨 We’re hiring a VP of Sales at Stone & Skillet to help build it. We’re already in Whole Foods nationwide, Target, and more. The opportunity ahead is huge, but the details matter: winning the right accounts, getting products off the shelf, and giving people a reason to buy us every week. If you’ve helped scale a CPG brand and want to work directly with a founder and an amazing, scrappy team to build something ambitious, I’d love to talk. Remote — NYC or Boston preferred. Apply here, or send this to someone we should meet: https://lnkd.in/eZHjUpHd

Jeff Klineman liked thisJeff Klineman liked thisIf I could only go to one CPG conference a year, it would be Beanstalk: 1,000+ of the Most Important Consumer Brands Gather in New York. Here's why: 1. Everyone is there to connect people. You spend three days meeting new people, hearing their stories, and introducing them to someone who can help. Investors, agencies, and founders all working together. The best part of CPG. 2. Quality time with my "good people helping good people" crew: Will Parsons (Locked In), Mike Gelb (Bridge), David Roger (Hetal), Craig Foldes (Chat Walrus), David Simnick (Soapbox). These guys are directly credited with 75% of my network today. 3. Sitting down with my favorite investor partners to talk about how we can help their portfolio companies together: Kiva Dickinson (Selva), Paula Sutter and Anthony Choe (Provenance), Daniel Faierman (Habitat), Trevor Rechnitz (Vanterra), Kyle Fitzpatrick (Paperboy), Tehmina Haider (L Catterton). 5. Meeting new founders and learning about their brands, like Annabel Hay from Clutch, a safe for your skin and clothes glue that's replacing fashion tape. Check it out at CVS. Finally meeting Rob Gregg (Stand+) in person. He has built out a 100% AI native CPG company. So impressive. 6. Keynotes from Jess Frenchman Jacobs (Coterie) and Jeffrey Raider (Mammoth Brands). Always refreshing to hear how their backgrounds shaped their current roles. 7. Dinners with interesting people, including Jameis Winston (NY Giants) and Ndamukong Suh (House of Spears), two NFL legends. Maxwell House Social Club was a great venue too. 8. Seeing existing clients in person: Mark Rushmore (Suri), Jess Frenchman Jacobs (Coterie), Rachel Mansfield and Jordan Carpenter (Cadootz), Ashley Sweeney (Realm), Brandon M. and Justin Kemperman (Javvy), Nishant S. (Arrae), Gary Zhao (Pacagen) 9. Meeting clients in person for the first time: Liana Krasnow (Noodo), Tal M. (Pavoi), Adam Bedford and Rohit Palekar (Sans), Rachel Oberst (Thesis) 10. Taking advantage of being in NYC to meet up with clients, friends, former co-workers, and VC's: Justin Kerzner (Magic Molecule), Susan Lyne (BBG Ventures), Ameer Amdani (Cottonball), and a whole bunch of my old Harry's crew. Beanstalk is the event I look forward to all year. I'd pick it over any other conference, Expo West included. What I value most is building new relationships and making the ones I already have stronger. Every year I'm reminded that the best way to grow your business is to help other people grow theirs. That's what makes this corner of CPG so great, and it's why I love what we do at The Retail Navigator Thanks again to Ray Cao, Max Starkman, and 🚀 Daniel Rodic for putting together the highest density of good people in the same room to enable this "high quality collisions." Save the date for next year: September 13–15 in Brooklyn. I'll be there! 📸: Catching up with my old Harry's co-worker Douglas Hwang (DTC Doug).

“The thing I always liked about Jeff was that he could tell a story with a sense of humor, something journalists are typically and tragically afraid to do. There are stories out there that simply have to be told with a sense of humor, especially something like a bar in New Hampshire ticking off its small town by holding coyote ugly nights. Of course, Jeff knows when to hold back when a serious narrative needs to be told. He also has a good heart beneath the trademark wisecracks.”

This was an interesting course from Robert Shiller (the Yale economist and co-developer of the Case-Shiller index) focused on how viral narratives shape public beliefs and drive economic conditions. A few takeaways stood out as particularly relevant from a strategic communications and reputation management perspective: 1. The truth is not enough to stop false narratives: We talk often about counter-narratives, particularly in the context of issues management, but this is sometimes viewed as secondary (a “nice-to-have”), while the heavier emphasis defaults to sharing “truth” or “facts” via rapid response statements and background media management. But the truth is not enough once the seed of a false or damaging narrative is planted; belief requires credible and equally-or-more compelling narrative alternatives. 2. The most important narratives aren’t always the most talked-about: In the push to demonstrate value and quantify results, narrative success is sometimes conflated with volume of mentions — but Shiller shows that influential and durable narratives aren’t always widely or frequently discussed. Foundational narratives can be so deeply embedded that they go unmentioned, even as their effects permeate. 3. “Narrative constellations” drive the most impact: The idea is simple, but I really appreciated the new (to me) terminology. Narrative repetition is important (another key principle), but single narratives aren’t as effective as a “constellation” of unique and mutually-reinforcing narratives. https://lnkd.in/df8FeNm5

For my PR Peeps...this one is worth your time -- earned or paid/with AI? "In this modern ecosystem, the goal is no longer just to guide a user through a journey, but to secure the product’s presence within the moment of choice. To achieve this, brands must understand the data sources fueling these AI systems." https://lnkd.in/e8Kj3xsJ

Writing isn't communicating. Publishing is communicating. At Etalia Science Relations, we apply this principle when it comes to working with clients to write Op-Ed articles: A decision to write is a decision to publish. Having a bullet-proof pitching strategy is just as important as writing a great article. Because it's the act of pitching that transforms an Op-Ed from a draft to a publication. Here are 5 approaches we follow that have allowed our team to consistently publish health and science Op-Eds over the last 15 years. 1. Build (but don't depend on) relationships with opinion editors. No self-respecting opinion editor is going to publish an Op-Ed because they have a relationship with the person who submitted it. Op-Eds were designed to be submitted by anyone. What matters even more than having a relationship with an editor is having a compelling point of view, driven by an effective pitching strategy: Is your pitch incredibly timely, i.e., is your Op-Ed about something people care about right now? Is it clear that you have experience that puts you in the middle of the issue you're commenting on? Do you have a compelling point of view that comes across in your pitch, i.e., will you change how others understand the issue? 2. Write a subject line that opinion editors open. We follow three simple rules of thumb for email subject lines when pitching Op-Eds: Be pithy State an opinion Truth in advertising 3. Write an Op-Ed pitch email that keeps editors reading. The pitch email answers a few critical questions: What's the Op-Ed about? Why is it important right now? Why is the author a credible voice on the issue? That's it. Our job is to make it as easy as possible for the editor to decide to read the full Op-Ed. 4. Pitch persistently. We put together robust lists of media outlets and publications that are in range for each Op-Ed. The more outlets we can pitch, the greater our odds of seeing the Op-Ed published. Like hockey players work to maximize shots on goal, we want to target as many outlets as we need to see it published. 5. Continually adapt the Op-Ed to keep it relevant. We don't limit ourselves to a single version. As we pitch down our target list of media outlets and publications, we fine tune every draft–and every pitch email–as necessary. Following this approach, every science and health Op-Ed we have worked with clients to develop over the last decade has been published.
