According to new reporting, Trump political appointees leaned on the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design and launch a $250 banknote featuring Donald Trump’s portrait, timed to the 250th anniversary of the United States. This would shatter a century‑old norm: living people do not appear on U.S. paper money. Inside Treasury, staff say the push wasn’t about fixing any real problem in the currency system. It was about branding — creating a high‑value note that would literally carry Trump’s image around the world. Here’s where it gets uglier. The career director of the Bureau, a longtime professional who oversaw the design and security of U.S. currency, raised red flags. She pointed out that the Federal Reserve had not asked for a $250 denomination, that introducing a new note is a complex, multi‑year process, and that putting a sitting president’s face on it would break with historical practice that keeps our money above partisan politics. After resisting the pressure, she says she was suddenly and “involuntarily” reassigned out of her role. In her farewell note to staff, she wrote, “The buck stopped here” — a quiet but unmistakable message about why she was being pushed aside. This isn’t happening in a vacuum. Trump allies in Congress have already introduced something called the “Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act,” explicitly ordering the creation of a $250 Federal Reserve note with his portrait. Treasury has also announced that Trump’s signature will appear on future bills alongside the Treasury secretary’s signature, another first for a sitting president. Step back and you see the pattern: they are trying to turn the world’s reserve currency into a loyalty billboard for one man. Currency is supposed to be boring on purpose. It’s not a campaign poster. It’s not a personality cult token. Once you start putting living leaders on the money, you’re playing a game we’ve seen in too many fragile democracies and outright dictatorships: the head of state on every wall, every coin, every note.

Joe Derbas liked thisJoe Derbas liked thisIn this morning’s Chicago Tribune, I was pleased to see a Waymo advertisement featuring an open letter signed by many of my friends and fellow Chicago civic and business leaders, encouraging Illinois legislators to create a legal pathway for Waymo to operate in our state. The core message of the letter is captured in its closing paragraph: “Illinois has an opportunity to strengthen its transportation ecosystem and continue its leadership in the Midwest. We urge you to support the passage of legislation to approve autonomous vehicles in Illinois.” Thank you to everyone who signed this important letter, including respected leaders such as Michael Jacobson of the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, Rob Karr of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, Karen Freeman-Wilson of the Chicago Urban League, Jaime di Paulo Zozaya of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Mark Denzler of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association’, Sam Toia of the Illinois Restaurant Association, and Jack Lavin of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.
