John Sherwin shared thisAfter leaving the day-to-day at Hydrant, I took a few months off to reset (featuring a few nights sleeping wild in the desert). Now, I’m back in the game and working with brands in the consumer health and wellness space. I’ve got bandwidth for one more company - if you or someone you know could use help building or launching a brand, I’d love to chat. Best way to reach me is jfpsherwin@gmail.com or DM on here.

John Sherwin posted thisToday, I’m excited to share that Josh Houghton will be joining Hydrant as CEO. After eight years in the role, I believe this is the time for fresh leadership to take the baton. Josh is an accomplished operator and I’m excited to work with him in Hydrant’s next stage. Building Hydrant has been an adventure: - venture backed hyper-growth - opening 12k+ retail doors nationally - working with pro-athletes on big ad campaigns - Learning from plenty of mistakes along the way, and subsequently reshaping the business for profitability and sustainable growth. I want to thank everyone who helped get Hydrant to where it is today: our team, investors, partners and beyond. Hydrant is a great brand with a bright future! I’ll be taking some time off for a few months to explore new ideas and opportunities, in CPG and beyond. If you’re building in consumer with a science component (health or environment), I’d love to connect.

John Sherwin shared thisIt feels like many parts of life have returned to relative normalcy now, but if you don't work in healthcare it's easy to miss how much of a burden is currently on the folks working in hospitals and other parts of our healthcare system. With long hours on your feet and PPE making it harder to drink water frequently, we're hoping that our donations can make a big impact to those on the frontlines still. If that's you - fill out the form!John Sherwin shared thisCALLING ALL HEALTHCARE HEROES! John Sherwin shared thisIt's a cold winter here in NYC, so we developed a new way to enjoy our Hydrant Sleep mix: Sleep Hot Cocoa. This hot drink has the our signature electrolyte blend for hydration + Sleep benefits for an all around better quality of sleep. It tastes decadent, but only has 3g of sugar. No one wants to drink a ton of liquid before bed either, so we designed it for 4-8oz of water or milk (125-250ml for my hometown friends!)John Sherwin shared thisSweet dreams are made of SLEEP Hot Cocoa. 💤 The newest addition to our SLEEP collection, this bedtime mix was created with melatonin for better quality sleep and coconut milk powder for a decadent consistency.

John Sherwin liked thisJohn Sherwin liked thisThis year I launched Cooper Hall Architecture, a design studio based between Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley. For the past couple of years I've been living upstate, renovating my own 19th century home in Pine Plains and working on historic renovations at The Art of Building, a wonderful design-build firm in Rhinebeck. Now splitting my time between Brooklyn and upstate, I'm enjoying working across apartment and brownstone renovations in the city and historic renovations and new builds in the Hudson Valley. Alongside the residential work, the studio takes on select hospitality and retail projects in the New York area. If you have a project in mind, I'd love to hear about it: cooper-hall.com

John Sherwin liked thisThank you to everyone who believed in us from the very beginning who enabled us to do the thing we love most - finding outliers and helping them realise the impossible. Thank you to our team. Thank you to the founders who have chosen to work with us. We are eternally grateful 🙏❤️ It’s a new day!John Sherwin liked thisFor most of its history, venture capital worked on a simple premise: founders gravitate to where the capital is. Silicon Valley, New York, London, and a handful of other centres, because proximity to investors, customers, talent, and networks could decide whether a company survives and ultimately thrives. Whilst that model produced extraordinary companies and will continue to do so, for us at Crane Venture Partners, it no longer describes how we see things. We recently published something we call The Meridian Principle. It begins with a simple observation: talent has always been evenly distributed; opportunity has not. In an AI accelerated world, the world's best founders are no longer bound by geography or defined by their proximity to capital. And they aren't moving to us but instead it is our capital and our presence that needs to be proximate to them. Today, we announced that we have raised $484 million across multiple investment vehicles, expanding our ability to invest from inception through every flavour of seed across Europe, North America, India, and Asia-Pacific. To meet and back the best founders wherever they are. These companies are rarely obvious at the start. Neither are the founders. We have found those people in the world's best-known technology ecosystems. We have also found them in research labs, universities, and emerging communities that venture capital has historically overlooked. We expect to find many more. Ideas that end up looking inevitable rarely looked that way at the beginning. They start as unconventional research, improbable founders, and markets that do not yet exist. Consensus arrives late. That is why conviction matters. The capital we announced today gives us greater ability to do that. The ambition is not to be bigger. It is to build the firm this generation of founders needs: one that can find extraordinary people early, connect them to opportunity anywhere in the world, and stay alongside them through the difficult work of building something that lasts. First to believe. Last to leave.

John Sherwin liked thisTHIS and the fact that cosmetic innovation need not be expensive or time consuming. Sometimes innovation stems from a simple perspective shift, or a small risk in product development strategy.John Sherwin liked thisAs a Cosmetic Chemist, I have an issue with dupe culture. Dupes in the cosmetic industry are so difficult to talk about, because there’s so much nuance to the conversation. On one hand, I’m so glad that dupes exist. There are so many expensive products that are marked up wildly so the brand can maximize their profits, so having affordable, accessible options is incredibly important. On the other hand, dupe culture has made it more normalized for companies to just knock off each others’ products, which leaves very little room for innovation. Over the course of my career I’ve seen hundreds of products get developed where the brief is just a popular benchmark and the company saying “we want to launch this exact same product, just cheaper for us to make.” The brand piggybacks off the success of a viral product, and the consumer is left buying another basic, boring product that’s been done a thousand times already, in slightly different packaging. I’m ALL for purchasing dupes of products that perform well, feel good, and don’t hurt your wallet. But I also think we should be urging companies to INNOVATE! Brands should increase their R&D budgets, give more creative freedom to the chemists designing the formulas, choose packaging that works well and looks cute, and prioritize quality over quantity. Some of my favorite brands only have 5 or 6 products, but every single product is a hit because they’re intentional with what they launch. THAT is what we should be encouraging and putting our money towards, not companies that just want to take your money. If you like purchasing dupes, don’t let me stop you. But I also encourage you to actively seek out companies that are making good, high quality formulas at prices you can afford. I promise you they exist.

M Ventures is excited to be supporting TwoStep alongside a fantastic group of investors as the company moves their first-in-class peptide drug-conjugate towards the clinic.John Sherwin liked this🧬 M Ventures co-leads TwoStep Therapeutics oversubscribed $62.5 million Series A round participating alongside Insight Partners, Medical Excellence Capital, LLC and Pfizer Ventures. TwoStep is developing multi-specific targeted therapies for solid tumors with their lead peptide-drug conjugate program TS-104 recently receiving IND clearance by the FDA. This financing and IND clearance enables TwoStep to initiate a first-in-human Phase 1 clinical trial of TS-104. This trial will provide the first clinical evaluation of the multi-specific targeting approach at the heart of TwoStep and assess the potential of TS-104 to broaden the reach of targeted therapies. The proceeds will also enable TwoStep to advance their radioligand program and expand into next-gen peptide conjugates. John Sherwin liked thisJohn Sherwin liked thisI’m delighted to welcome Matt Russell as the new CEO of Log my Care. Building Log my Care from an idea into the business it is today has been an incredible journey. I’m immensely proud of what our team has built and, most importantly, of the impact we’ve been able to have for care providers and the people they support. The success we’ve achieved means the time is right to strengthen our leadership for the next stage of that journey. Matt brings extensive experience scaling technology businesses, but what particularly stood out to me was his passion for people. He has spent his career thinking about how technology can help people do their best work, something that feels incredibly relevant to social care and to what we’ve always wanted to achieve at Log my Care. I’ll remain closely involved as I step into a new role as Founder Director, and am looking forward to supporting Matt, the team and our customers as we enter this next chapter. Welcome, Matt!

John Sherwin liked thisJohn Sherwin liked thisThis summer I wrapped up my time at Unify. It was my first foray into the AI startup world, and while only a year on paper, I learned more than I expected to in five. Grateful to the team for the ride along the way. In that year, there was one company that kept popping up. Whether it was: - Sitting in on their onboarding call my first week with Angela and Christopher - Later working on a case study with Vicky and Ethan to celebrate their wins - Walking past their ads every day on my way to work - Or even hearing recruiters in my network rave about them So it only feels right to be joining Juicebox to build out product marketing 🧃 Excited to play a small part in the company that recruiting teams at Notion, Cursor, and Reddit trust to hire world class talent. And to work with folks like David, Ishan, Simran, and Seng that I met through the process. If you're in the recruiting space, reach out as I'd love to try my hand at a demo. And if you're looking at new roles, we're hiring! (Not pictured: my wife taking this pic like it's my first day of school)

The company has raised nearly $500M since its founding in 2022. OpenEvidence developed an AI-powered medical search engine and generative chatbot built exclusively for physicians. The platform summarizes and ranks evidence-based medical information from trusted sources like the American Medical Association and The New England Journal of Medicine, helping doctors access reliable research in seconds. Usage among US clinicians has surged 830% over the past year, supporting more than 16M clinical consultations per month across 10,000 hospitals and medical centers. The new funding will expand its AI research in natural language processing and computer vision, supporting development of advanced tools like DeepConsult, which generates PhD-level research summaries for doctors. The company aims to make evidence-based care faster, easier, and more accessible for clinicians nationwide.

🚨 MIDI HEALTH HITS $1 BILLION VALUATION 🚨 Midi Health has become the latest women’s health unicorn, reaching a $1 billion valuation following a $100 million Series D round led by Goodwater Capital💰. Founded by Joanna Strober, Midi began as a telehealth platform focused on menopause care and is now expanding into weight loss and branded supplements. Crucially, the ambition is clear: to build the biggest consumer brand in women’s health 🌍 For those of us in life sciences executive search, this moment matters 👇 It reflects a broader shift in the market: • Women’s health moving from underserved to investable at scale 📈 • Consumer-first healthcare brands becoming credible category leaders 🏆 • Founder-led vision shaping businesses built for long-term impact, not quick exits 🚀 Midi has now raised $250 million in total funding. Strober has been clear she is not looking to sell. Instead, she is focused on building something truly large and, in doing so, inspiring more women to build and lead ambitious companies ✨👩💼 As investors, boards and leadership teams look ahead, this is a powerful reminder that representation at the top shapes entire markets 💡 #WomensHealth #FemaleFounders #Leadership #LifeSciences #HealthTech #ConsumerHealth #ExecutiveSearch #WomenInLeadership #LuminaryGroup

Your HealthTech product is solid, but you aren’t getting traction. Pilot stalls Failed to scale Uninterested clinicians Ghosted by administrators Founders, why why oh why is this happening to you? If you are building in HealthTech, You have to build something you know will either - fit seamlessly into the current workflow OR - disrupts a current broken workflow and builds it back with true effectiveness And you can only do this if you talk to clinicians Boots on the ground Taking care of patients Doing the admin tasks In the trenches Not their bosses Not their C-suite Not the crusty old RN or MD MBA who hasn’t done a set of vitals in 23 years (sorry) Not your college roommate or golfing buddy. It doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to break your budget. But you desperately need to validate your implementation to communicate value and drive adoption.

Orange Health Labs has always been committed to six-hour reporting. Not "as fast as possible" but specifically six hours, no exceptions. This one constraint made them build everything differently. They couldn't use standard labs designed for average daily volume - they had to build for peak hourly capacity. They couldn't have doctors at each location, so they built remote pathology, where one doctor reviews slides from multiple cities. They couldn't rely on traditional logistics - so they created dedicated networks covering four times the area of competitors. Now incumbents can't copy it without scrapping their existing infrastructure. They have hundreds of labs built the old way, doctors hired locally, and established logistics. Retrofitting would cost more than starting from scratch, and starting from scratch means abandoning their existing business. I like how Orange Health's edge is that matching their model means incumbents must treat their current infrastructure as sunk cost. This is the kind of advantage that compounds.

Most early-stage health-tech startups are told the same thing: "Hospitals have a long sales cycle." After years of working with hospitals and healthcare innovators, I've come to a different conclusion. Most delayed deals aren't caused by hospitals. They're caused by: • Unclear ROI stories • Selling to the wrong stakeholders • Weak commercial validation • Pilots without defined success metrics • Positioning technology instead of outcomes Hospitals can move surprisingly fast when they clearly understand the problem being solved, the expected impact, and the value being created. The question isn't: "Why are hospitals taking so long to buy?" The better question is: "Have we made it easy for hospitals to say yes?" In this carousel, I've shared some of the most common reasons hospital deals stall—and what health-tech founders can do differently to accelerate adoption. At Bread and Butter Ventures, we're in our 7th year of investing in digital health. I've been hearing a lot of feedback lately from both funds and founders alike that VC funding for tech-enabled care delivery is fewer and far between these days. I'm super bullish on tech-enabled care as a component of a digital health portfolio because I believe that true, lasting innovation will be driven by bottoms-up early stage innovation responding to top-down industry pain points, and that to innovate we must have distribution through the incumbent plumbing of the healthcare system - and that includes care at the center. Yes, the margins are lower than pure software, but the distribution network of healthcare is very different than pure B2B. We're super interested right now in: ✅ Applications of AI to in infrastructure and operations of health care systems, provider networks, health plans to reduce manual work and enable everyone to operate at their best and highest use ✅ Applications of AI to clinical decision support and ultimately care delivery ✅ Solutions that address population health and help with access to care in both rural and urban settings (both from a care & cost perpspective), cardiometabolic health, women's health (still wildly uninvested opportunities to serve half the population), eldercare ✅ Insurtech, fintech and the payments layer of healthcare We would love to connect with more co-investors at all stages (pre-seed, seed, later stage) who are actively investing in digital health and specifically at tech-enabled care solutions to drive the next generation of healthcare innovation. Please DM us or tag a firm/investor here!
