This report provides the methods and results of Colgate University’s 2013 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory. The Inventory was completed in compliance with one of the key requirements of the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment (ACUPCC)–with support from President Jeffrey Herbst. The data gathered follows the protocol specified in the ACUPCC Implementation Guide and the calculations were made using emissions factors from the Clean Air-Cool Planet Campus Carbon Calculator v6.9, also recommended in the ACUPCC guidelines. This is our fifth consecutive year completing Colgate’s greenhouse gas inventory. Colgate’s inventory of emissions includes all Scope 1 emissions (on-campus stationary combustion of fossil fuels for space heating and domestic hot water, vehicle fleet emissions, fugitive refrigerant chemicals, and emissions associated with grounds maintenance) and Scope 2 emissions (purchased electricity). Scope 3 emissions include faculty and staff commuting, bus commuting (Colgate Cruiser), air travel (paid by or through the university), landfill waste, and paper use.

  • Teaching LEED: Green Buildings as Teaching Tools

New York State Green Building Conference

Colgate University's Trudy Fitness Center opened in 2011 and was LEED silver certified in 2012. However, the building's potential as a teaching tool was largely ignored in its first year of occupancy. To collect relevant data, we conducted an online survey of Colgate students, faculty, and staff, along with interviewing key stakeholders. We found that there is a lack of awareness regarding its LEED status, and that marketing efforts such as kiosks or signage could prove effective.

Solarize Madison is a community-focused renewable energy program promoting sustainable energy production to stabilize current and future energy costs. The intent of the program was to help consumers save money, generate clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, create local jobs, and promote equity by creating local economic opportunities and career pathways in the region.

Solarize Madison resulted in 170 enrollees during the first two weeks at a series of six informational meetings held throughout the County and an additional 35 enrollees by the close of the four month enrollment period. The goal was to obtain thirty (30) installation contracts from participants and expected to reach 100 kilowatts of combined solar through the effort. Due to its unique and successful merging of community engagement and education, smart marketing, green job training, and economies of scale, the program contracted to install twenty eight (28) solar PV systems (177kW) generating nearly 77% more kilowatts of installed solar than originally targeted.
