Ryan Katz shared thisOne of the things I love most about this industry is the willingness of people to share, learn, and help each other navigate whatever comes next. That was on full display at the The Nonprofit Alliance Leadership Summit. The conversations were thoughtful, honest, and focused on the challenges facing our sector today, from developing future leaders and building trust to understanding how AI can help us work smarter and create more impact. What stuck with me most was a simple reminder...leadership isn't really about having all the answers. It's about listening, learning, investing in people, and being willing to evolve. I left energized by the ideas, inspired by the people in the room, and optimistic about what's ahead for our sector. Thanks to The Nonprofit Alliance for bringing together such an incredible group of leaders.Ryan Katz shared thisLeadership is stronger when we learn alongside one another. Our team joined nonprofit leaders and changemakers from across the sector at The Nonprofit Alliance's Leadership Summit 2026 in San Antonio last week. It was a valuable opportunity to step back, hear from peers, and think about what strong leadership looks like in a changing sector. We’re proud to have supported the Summit as a Platinum Sponsor. Thank you to everyone who made it such a thoughtful few days. #TheNonprofitAlliance #NonprofitLeadership #WeAreMoore

Ryan Katz shared this"Business is personal" That phrase got proven again right in front of me yesterday, over and over, at the Merkle reunion. You spend years in the trenches with people...client fires, late nights, wins you celebrated together...and then everyone scatters to different companies, different cities, different chapters. And then you get a room back together, and it turns out none of that mattered. The connection was never about the org chart. What struck me most wasn't the nostalgia (though there was plenty). It was watching people who built their careers, and in a lot of cases, their whole professional identity, around a specific kind of culture. One built on genuine relationships, not just transactions. People who pushed each other, backed each other up, and actually meant it when they said "let me know if you need anything." Reconnecting with so many of those people yesterday was a reminder of something easy to lose sight of day-to-day: the best business relationships were never really about the business. They were about the people who showed up for each other inside of it. It's also a reminder of something bigger: strong culture isn't a nice-to-have, it's the foundation everything else gets built on. Strategy changes, org charts change, even companies change, but a room full of people who still show up for each other years later is what a great culture actually produces. That's not an accident. It's the result of leadership that prioritized people, not just performance. A huge thank you to David Williams for organizing and hosting, but more than that, for building the kind of company and culture that made everyone want to show up in the first place. My camera roll from last night is embarrassingly empty. My conversations, on the other hand, were full. Grateful for the reunion, grateful for the people, and grateful that "business is personal" wasn't just a saying at Merkle, it was the operating system.

Ryan Katz liked thisSuch a great opportunity to reconnect with Alex Jiménez and to share my thoughts on my journey, the impact of digital and its true potential to transform the client experience.Ryan Katz liked thisMost banks still treat digital as one channel among branches and call centers, a piece of the operation to maintain. On the latest #NextBestAction episode, Todd P., SVP and Head of Digital Strategy at TD, points to a number that makes his case for him: 22 million digital logins a month, 1.2 billion a year at TD. That volume puts digital at the center of how the bank runs, on the same standing as any other core business line. That's the mindset shift Purcell is pushing across the organization. The full conversation gets into what running digital as the business actually requires from the people doing it. Link to the full episode below. #DigitalBanking #DigitalStratregy #AI #Leadership

Ryan Katz liked thisRyan Katz liked thisHave you ever wondered why some people shine in one team, yet seem invisible in another? The truth is, it’s rarely about talent. I’ve seen the same person appear timid in one environment and absolutely exceptional in another. The difference isn’t skill or intelligence—it’s psychological safety. When people feel safe—truly safe—to speak up, to risk mistakes, to be themselves, something incredible happens. They unlock potential that even they didn’t know existed. Ideas flow more freely. Collaboration becomes natural. People stop holding back and start showing up as their best selves. But when that safety is missing, even the brightest stars dim. Fear of judgment, ridicule, or failure can silence creativity and suppress innovation. Teams become cautious, communication breaks down, and growth stalls. As leaders, it’s up to us to create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Safety isn’t a soft skill—it’s the foundation of high performance. The most successful teams aren’t built on talent alone, but on trust, empathy, and a shared commitment to lift each other up. Imagine what your team could achieve if everyone felt safe enough to bring their full selves to the table. What breakthroughs are waiting, just out of reach, because someone is holding back? If you’re ready to transform your team and unlock their true potential, I invite you to dive deeper into this topic in my new book, The Blueprint of Leadership. Ryan Katz liked thisRyan Katz liked thisI'd spent too much time in the office lately. So it was time to get back to where it really happens: our boutiques. 🛍️ Our boutique teams create the most tangible experience of Marie-Stella-Maris there is. Every scent, every conversation, every gift wrapped with care. If you want to understand the brand, you go there. This time I brought three questions. 1️⃣ What can we eliminate today to make your work easier? This one is my homework. Together with our HQ teams, we look at what's getting in the way. Often it's a process that's grown inefficient, or double work that helps other teams but adds nothing for the boutique. Hearing it firsthand shows me exactly where we need to improve. 2️⃣ What can you do today to get more out of your boutique? Our boutique teams run their stores like small business owners. They know their customers, their space and their rhythm better than anyone. A slow-moving product sitting in the best spot in the store. A different experience for a busy Saturday versus a quiet Tuesday morning, or for someone with five minutes versus fifty. The teams own these ideas, test them, and share what works with the other boutiques right away. 3️⃣ What do you need to test in the coming weeks to be ready for November and December? This is our busiest and most fun season, and we can't wait to welcome as many people as possible to find their festive gifts with us. Testing now gives us time to learn, adjust and share, so every boutique is ready to make that experience special. I always walk away with a longer to-do list than I came with, and that's exactly the point. Thank you Fabienne van der Elst, Leyla Moshkelgosha and Sharon van der Linden with your great teams, for the open and inspiring conversations. Every visit I learn so much from you. 💙

Ryan Katz reacted on thisRyan Katz reacted on thisI’m incredibly excited to share that I’ve been promoted to Client Partner at True Search. There’s something particularly meaningful about becoming a Partner at a firm called True. Being a "True Partner" who is curious, transparent, prepared, invested, and willing to challenge the thinking when it matters is exactly what I’ve been working toward. Executive search has never been transactional to me; that belief has shaped how I’ve approached my development in this field. Over the past several years, I’ve been intentional about building the skills I believe makes me a better partner to clients: executive search training through Cornell, sustainability through MIT, executive coaching at NYU, and Hogan assessment certification. Different disciplines, but all connected by the same curiosity about businesses, people, and what makes leadership successful. I bring that thinking into every single search. I want to understand the business before defining the mandate. I want clients to know what we’re seeing in the market, not just who we’ve found. I want to understand the person beyond the résumé: how they lead, what motivates them, the environments in which they thrive, and whether their experience will translate to what comes next. And I’m always thinking beyond a single placement by building relationships and understanding how I can help create value. Much of my work today is across industrial, energy and climate technology, where companies are navigating enormous change and leadership decisions carry real consequence. I feel fortunate to work alongside founders, investors, boards, and executives who make those decisions. I’m grateful to the many clients, candidates, mentors, and colleagues who have trusted me along the way. To everyone at True, from my Practice Lead to my career coach, and the many Partners I have the privilege of working beside, and equally important, to the hardest-working team ever who drive execution, and all the Principals in the practice who have been along for the journey. Paul Gilkerson Josh Smith Danielle Munley Kevin Brown Steve Kyryk Tim McDonald Andy Towne Thomas Willie Samara Freschman Charlie Bonham Paola Pinzon Camille Petitti Tabitha Cahan Zoe Jackson-Gibson Christopher Smails Lisi Weilandt Lila Datz If I didn't mention your name, you know who you are, and I'm grateful to be joined by such incredible talent!

Ryan Katz reacted on thisRyan Katz reacted on thisOur family entered the next phase of our son's battle with brain cancer after a new tumor appeared in Benny's scans. Thankfully, we also received good news yesterday when Benny's lumbar puncture results showed no evidence of cancer cells in his spinal fluid. Praise God. This means we don't have to start any immediate treatments, and we get to live a relatively normal life through this coming Fall and Christmas. The issue remains that he still has a new tumor growing in his brain that we need to continued monitoring and eventually treating. He is scheduled for a set of MRIs that will last all day on January 14th. We will continue to pray for miraculous healing each day, and we thank you for prayers and friendship through it all. Being with Benny always encourages me to live in the present moment and be grateful for every obstacle and opportunity God puts in my path. My prayer is that Benny's story also reminds you to keep first things first, be impeccable with your word, and always do your best.

Ryan Katz liked thisRyan Katz liked thisI moved my family 2,000 miles to rebuild an agency's culture. In the late 90s, I launched a second agency in the Bay Area. bang!zoom was a tech-focused shop that landed global, blue-chip clients faster than we had any right to. From our Chicago HQ, it looked like a rocket. But up close, it had a big problem I hadn't planned for. The leader I'd hired to run it was a bad fit. Not short on talent—wrong for our DNA. In a remarkably short time, he had shaped a culture I didn't recognize as ours – or want as ours. Expertise was there, scattered among smart people doing good work. What was broken was how the place worked when nobody was watching, and unfortunately, too often when somebody was. That experience taught me how quickly culture moves in the wrong hands. It is also why I couldn't fix it with another leadership hire. I had just watched one résumé rewrite an office's DNA in months. I wasn't going to bet the rebuild on another one. Culture isn't reset by a memo, retreat, or values statement on the wall. Whoever rebuilds it has to be in the room every day, demonstrating it. That person had to be me. And I could go for one reason: Chicago. Two leaders – eventual Partners - there had been with me for more than a decade. They hadn't merely absorbed our culture -- they had helped build it. I didn't worry about Chicago for a single day I was gone. Thats the other half of the lesson. So, this lifelong Chicagoan, and my wife, packed up our very young daughter and moved to San Francisco. We rebuilt the culture, and bang!zoom ultimately became part of the same acquisition as our Chicago agency. Years later, I saw the same truth from the other side of a conference table. A top global holding company came to our office to discuss acquiring us. Five minutes into the meeting, I knew our cultures could never mesh. It felt like sitting with a law firm: polished, formal, procedural. Too formal. Too procedural. It was the antithesis of the agency I built with purpose. There was nothing wrong with their culture. There was everything wrong with the fit. They had come to evaluate us. But I was also evaluating them—deciding whether these were people I could trust with our employees, our clients, and everything we had spent years building. It took five minutes to know that I couldn't. In the wrong leader's hands, our SF office culture broke in months. In the right leaders' hands, it held for years without me. And across a conference table, another company's culture revealed itself immediately. Culture isn't what leadership demands. Its what leadership demonstrates. Months to break. Decades to hold. Five minutes to see. Build and live yours with purpose.

Businesses don't grow because they market better. They grow because they connect business strategy to customer behavior.

That's been the focus of my career for more than 25 years. I've partnered with executive teams to answer one fundamental question: How do we create sustainable business growth?

The answer is rarely another marketing campaign or another technology platform. Great question Provoke Insights! One example that comes to mind came from a segmentation study for a kitchen appliance brand. The company assumed their core audience purchased primarily for speed and convenience. However, the research revealed that the most valuable segment actually viewed cooking as a creative outlet and a way to care for their families. For them, the product represented pride in making something fresh and thoughtful, not just saving time. Once the messaging shifted from “quick and easy” to helping people create better meals at home, engagement and purchase intent increased significantly. Moments like this are exactly why research matters. The motivations behind consumer behavior are often very different from what brands assume. If you work in marketing or strategy, this article is a must-read on how market research strengthens brand strategy. #MarketResearch #BrandStrategy #ConsumerInsights #MarketingStrategy #ConsumerBehavior
