Kim Taylor shared thisOn the drop in labor force participation: "In summary, it is retirements and a drop in foreign workers that have led to the drop in participation. Easy on the doom narratives."Kim Taylor shared thisA lot of really bad takes are making their way in the news and on places like LinkedIn about the gains in "not in labor force" and drop in labor force participation. Let's put this to bed. If you take the net change in the "not in labor force" (unadjusted) from Feb 2020 (last month before the pandemic) to last month, it is +9,575,000. (it is actually 10.6M seasonally adjusted but hold on that thought). 97% of that 9.6M gain is from people over the age of 55 (you can't get that one seasonally adjusted hence this analysis). Now, the LFPR. Roughly a little less than 2/3rds of the increase in the labor force from the pandemic to now came from foreign workers (the actual number is likely much higher but now is not the time to explain all that). At their peak presence, they had a 67% LFPR. It is 65.6% now. Contrast this to the native born labor force that only made up a third of the gain with their 61% LFPR (never got above 62.3% and even that is a foreign born influenced anomaly) and you have your drop in LFPR (combined with the retirements above). Turns out when you revoke asylee status on the portion of the labor force with much higher participation (after all they come here to work), your overall rate goes down. In summary, it is retirements and a drop in foreign workers that have led to the drop in participation. Easy on the doom narratives.

Kim Taylor shared thisAn important piece from our President Michael Zimmerman on building transfer-friendly pathways for our community college students. This is especially important for many of students who are also busy frontline and gig workers. Rebuilding public trust in higher education requires expanding affordable routes. What we've learned: 1. Stop making students guess. 2. Design transfer pathways that lead to completion. 3. Ensure associate degree completion. 4. Support students at every step. 5. Build shared accountability for student outcomes. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e8DP9NDp5 Critical Steps to Building Transfer-Friendly Pathways5 Critical Steps to Building Transfer-Friendly Pathways

Kim Taylor shared this"This is the tale of two labor markets in action. The groups that were traditionally most vulnerable — less-educated, manual and service workers — are the ones benefiting most from persistent labor shortages." via The Burning Glass InstituteKim Taylor shared thisI've been writing a lot recently about the rising unemployment rate among young college graduates. But it's worth stepping back and remembering that the labor market looks very different depending on where you sit. For adults 25 and older without a high school diploma, the unemployment rate is near historic lows. As the chart shows, the 12-month moving average is around 6%, a level this group has almost never sustained. During the Great Recession it peaked above 15%. Even in the strong labor market of the late 1990s it hovered around 6-7%. This is the tale of two labor markets in action. The groups that were traditionally most vulnerable — less-educated, manual and service workers — are the ones benefiting most from persistent labor shortages. Meanwhile, college-educated workers, long assumed to be insulated from economic pain, are facing a less favorable environment. #labormarkets #unemploymentrate

Britt on AI and humans in Work Shift: "Supporting workers through AI transitions via reskilling and policy safeguards can mitigate losses and harness gains for all. Media and industry titans must follow suit, moving beyond alarmism to spotlight these stories. Kim Taylor reacted on thisKim Taylor reacted on this31%. That's the share of Americans who now say a college education is “very important,” according to new Gallup data. In 2013, it was 70%. That's a remarkable shift, and higher education should not explain it away. But here's where the story gets more interesting. Gallup’s broader data tell a more complicated story. Confidence in higher education is also low, yet roughly three quarters of parents still want their children to pursue college or another form of education or training after high school. And at the same time that perceptions have fallen, attainment has moved in the opposite direction. When Lumina Foundationa began tracking this in 2009, about 38% of working age adults held a degree or other quality credential. Today, it is about 55%. So more Americans are earning education beyond high school while fewer Americans are willing to say college is very important. That's a tension worth paying attention to. I don’t think Americans have simply decided that education after high school no longer matters. I think they've become much more skeptical about the bargain. Is it affordable? Will I finish? Will it lead to a good job? Will what I learn be worth what I pay? Is this particular credential the right path for me? For years, higher education could rely on a fairly simple promise: go to college and you will be better off. The public is asking for something much more specific now: "Will this credential, from this institution, at this price, create value for me?” That's the question higher education has to be prepared to answer. https://lnkd.in/gckip4zkRecord-Low 31% Say College Education Is 'Very Important'Record-Low 31% Say College Education Is 'Very Important'

Kim Taylor liked thisKim Taylor liked thisWe just instituted an official AI Writing Policy at Clay. Massive thanks to Sophie Alpert on our engineering team who wrote this. Originally this was just for eng, but other teams found it so helpful we expanded it company-wide. Here are the four guiding principles: 1. You must stand behind every idea and sentence It is your responsibility to make sure that the entire document is representative of your own thoughts before you share it. 2. Writing is thinking Spending time on the writing process teaches you more about your topic. If you circumvent this process, you will walk away with a poorer understanding of the subject matter. 3. More time should be spent writing a document than consuming it If you generate a document from a short prompt then ask your readers to go through the longer output, you are disrespecting their time. They can talk to ChatGPT themselves if they want to. 4. Longer is not better AI makes it easy to generate long docs, and it loves padding them with sentences that say nothing. If you're producing docs from a short prompt, consider just sharing the prompt. You can read (and borrow) the full policy below. Hopefully we all communicate a bit more clearly now :)

Kim Taylor liked thisKim Taylor liked this✍️ Writing is essential to how Mercury communicates as a 1300 person remote-first company. Principles of Writing at Mercury 1. Writing is thinking: Spending time on writing is not wasting time, it helps you process ideas, analyze problems, and explore solutions. 2. Less writing is better: Good writing is concise, which makes it easier to understand. 3. Reading should be easy: If >2 people will read your writing you should spend extra time making your writing good + digestible + clear etc. It is not fair for people reading to do work that the writer could have done for them. 4. Writing is expression: Your writing will be taken as an expression of your identity, so give it the care it deserves and be authentic. 5. Writing is important: Writing is the main way we communicate internally at Mercury, as a remote-first firm. We frame important discussions, and document thought processes and ultimate decisions, with our writing. On Using AI for Writing It is very easy to use AI to write a lot of content. If you do so, then by default you have: 1. Outsourced your thinking 2. Created a verbose/long doc 3. Made it hard to read 4. Have a doc that is not expressive and very bland 5. Watered down our discussions and decision making In other words, heavy AI use for writing is diametrically opposed to the principles of writing laid out above. Some effective ways that AI could be used instead: 1. Critiquing your writing 2. Condensing your writing 3. Shaping initial drafts 4. Summarizing complex information On Using AI to Respond on Slack/Comments Slack threads and comments are a particularly bad use of AI writing. 1. Slack responses and doc comments should always be short. Large blocks of AI text don’t belong. 2. AI used here is often thoughtless and the other party could have just used the AI tool themself. It inherently shows a disrespect for the reader’s time. 3. Given our remote culture, one of the main ways we connect with each other is via Slack. Using AI often would obscure your authentic perspective. 4. It would be better to share the prompt you gave to the AI directly to the other person and they can just prompt their own AI tool. How to do Great Writing at Mercury We aren’t going to police whether someone is using AI or not to help them write. We will just have a high standard for your writing output. Here are some high-level rules that should help: 1. Always read and stand by 100% of your written output. 2. When it is important, spend time on your writing. You might spend time on the narrative arc, the tone, the structure, whether it clearly articulates an issue, explores solutions, and drives toward an outcome. 3. Think hard about how you can use fewer words and be more concise. 4. Be authentic. You don’t need to dress up your writing in corporate jargon to make it sound professional. Simple, plain writing is often more effective. 5. Never copy-paste AI responses to someone in Slack or to comment on a doc.

Kim Taylor liked thisDave and I really enjoyed this conversation. Brett Schneider is doing big things at UCLA!Kim Taylor liked thisTwo weeks into The Business of Fandom at UCLA and so far we’ve been working through two deceptively simple questions: What is fandom? And why does it matter to us? In Week 01, Susan Kresnicka joined our B-Side to talk about the origin story - how fan relationships begin, and what those beginnings can tell us about the role fandom eventually plays in our lives. This week, ben valenta and David Sikorjak joined us to explore identity - including something that continues to challenge one of the oldest stereotypes about fans: fans have more friends. That’s been one of my favorite parts of building this course. The A-Side gives us the theory. The B-Side puts it in conversation with people who have spent years studying, building and working inside fandom. Two weeks down. A lot more to unpack. Thank you Susan, ben and David for being so generous with your time.

Kim Taylor liked thisKim Taylor liked thisToday, I’m excited to introduce Personal Agent Gateway, a new communication layer for how businesses interact with personal AI agents like Muse, Instinct, and Dots. Personal agents will become a major interface between customers and businesses. They’re already starting to book, buy, cancel, and negotiate on behalf of their owners. As they get better, customers will hand off more of the work of interacting with businesses to them. That creates a new challenge for businesses. Blocking personal agents risks creating a worse customer experience, but letting them interact like any other customer means giving up important control over identity, permissions, and how requests are handled. Personal Agent Gateway helps enterprises identify personal AI agents and route their requests through a dedicated channel. From there, businesses can control what those agents are allowed to access or change on a customer’s behalf. We’re also introducing PACT, our protocol that lets personal agents prove who they represent and what they’re authorized to do within permissions set by the business. We also announced Voice 3, Agent Modules, and Duet Apprentice today at Decagon Dialogues. More on everything we launched in the comments.

Kim Taylor liked thisKim Taylor liked thisEmployers keep signaling that they want more workers, but aren't hiring them. US job openings edged down to 7.1 million in August, according to the latest JOLTS report, and as Indeed #HiringLab economist Cory Stahle writes, hiring continues to move sideways at low levels. August recorded about 0.7 hires for every job opening from July, short of the roughly 0.8 hires per opening in August 2019. With layoffs and quits even lower than hiring, though, payrolls keep growing, but the labor market is far less dynamic than it was a few years ago. That is a comfortable place to be if you already have a job, and a frustrating one if you're trying to find one. Meanwhile, Indeed job postings are above their levels from a year ago for the first time in more than four years. That demand is likely to translate into more hires eventually, but a rebound built on intentions alone can quickly stall. Performance tracking is no longer optional for modern schools. Without structured systems, academic visibility becomes fragmented and decision-making slows down. Cleezo Class enables institutions to: • Monitor student performance in real time • Evaluate teacher effectiveness with data-driven insights • Automate attendance and reporting workflows • Access a centralized academic dashboard The result is better visibility, faster decisions, and stronger academic outcomes. If your institution is scaling, structured tracking systems are essential. 👉 Schedule a demo: https://cleezoclass.com/ #EdTech #SchoolLeadership #EducationManagement #SchoolERP #DigitalTransformation #AcademicPerformance #CleezoClass

Most dashboards stop at data. Parsec Education helps you turn it into direction and action. Here’s how we help leaders see what matters: • Filter by student groups to understand how low-income, multilingual, or SPED students are doing. • Compare performance with systems that share your size, structure, and demographics. • Review the plans behind outperforming districts directly from their LCAPs. • Connect with district leaders to learn what’s working. • Track progress over time and see who’s making real gains post-COVID. This is more than a dashboard, it’s data built for action.
