Patrick L. shared thisStorytime, In primary school, remarkable people such as Bill Gates, Elon Musk, etc were preached to us as role models worth aspiring to. The ideals of greatness has long been engrained in our society and that we too can achieve it if only we worked hard enough. They say to follow the golden bricked road; go to #college, get a good high paying job, find the love of your life to raise a family with and you will find happiness. Thus is the true embodiment of the #AmericanDream. I want to make the argument that #greatness, though virtuous, isn’t about ungodly achievements, but is multifariously ubiquitous. We ignorantly ignore the little things in life. Where a farmer is showing off their greatness harvest at the local country fair. Where a chef is redefining their childhood’s cuisine. Where a teacher is providing unpaid after school tutoring to their pupils. These stories are rarely shared by the media, but I find them the most #memorable. People here are proud of their work. They might not be #millionaires or #billionaires, but they are proud. "The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight" (#westwing). They’re all scrapping by, just like us, to conquer their #aspirations but most importantly, to ensure that their kids and grandkids’ lives are just that little bit easier to endure. So I ask my colleagues to share in your #accomplishments. Be #proud that you’ve made it this far. But most importantly, ask yourself, “What’s next?”.

Patrick L. posted thisI remember back in primary school (K - 12), I was often asked the question, "what do you want to be when you grow up?". Typically the answers from my peers would be astronaut, medical doctor, etc. The idea of pursuing greatness has always rubbed me the wrong way. We all want to become perfect yet we all live imperfect lives. We place our leaders on a pedestal yet we heavily critic them for being human. We forget about the little person that is just asking for a sign of hope in life yet we forget that we were once that little person. I now believe that the world isn't expecting us to do great things, but that we do things with great care. The actions that we do to advance oneself should never be for a sense of superiority, but to alleviate some suffering to humanity. I believe we can do more together as one collective union. #people #success #motivation #compassion #life #leadership

Patrick L. posted thisSo I originally posted this on my #facebook and it seemed to resonate well with many individuals. I figured Linkedin folks might enjoy it :). After working +2 years full time and achieving my elementary school dream of NOT being #poor has taught me this life lesson. All the problems that I’ve experienced before working full time (asking to borrow lunch money from friends, saving birthday and Christmas presents to last the entire year, working at a service job to make rent), money could have solved 150% of all of these problems. I get hella pissed whenever people say that money doesn’t buy you happiness. That being said, your income to happiness gain ratio will plateau. I suppose all I’m saying is that #financialsecurity was a serious stressor in my life and getting rid of it made me very happy. As #daveramsey once said, “Live like no one else, so later you can Live Like No One Else”. Note: I am extremely fortunate to be where I am in life. Not everyone has the same opportunities as I had. Stay #humble and keep improving oneself!

Patrick L. liked thisPatrick L. liked thisWe are entering the age of the IC. Six CTOs just traded their titles to write code at Anthropic. This is what it looks like when leverage shifts. For decades, the conventional wisdom in tech was that impact scales through headcount. You learn to code, you get good at it, and then the way you have more impact is by managing people who code. The path upward was almost always a path away from the keyboard. AI is inverting that logic. Since early 2025, six CTOs stepped down to become Members of Technical Staff at Anthropic. Not because they burned out on exec life, but because they concluded that shipping code at a flat-structured AI lab offered more leverage than managing whole orgs at a traditional company. The same shift is happening inside existing companies too. Zuckerberg has recently been coding with Claude Code and shipping diffs for the first time in roughly 20 years. One of his PRs got 200+ engineer approvals from people who just wanted to say they'd reviewed the CEO's code. Garry Tan at YC is doing the same, 15 years after stepping back from hands-on work. There's a valid counterpoint here though. Is this really "IC now has more impact than being in a manager role," or is it "Anthropic specifically has more impact than anywhere else?" Probably a bit of both. But the fact that this pattern shows up within Meta and YC too suggests something bigger is at play. AI is collapsing the output gap between one skilled engineer and a team, and the leverage that used to require headcount now fits in a terminal window. Zaheer and I have felt this over time at Levels.fyi. We've both been stepping much more into IC role responsibilities. The comp data reflects the shift too. Anthropic MTS roles at senior levels often comp near or above what a CTO earns at a Series B or C company. Although the equity at Anthropic isn’t immediately liquid, the company’s growth rate has turned “normal” comp packages into million dollar lottery tickets in < 1 year. Nobody is just a coach anymore. You have to be a player coach. Nobody is above IC work. Are you seeing this in your org? Execs picking up more IC work, or managers returning to the craft?

I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and grateful to have been part of a company that continues to innovate across so many areas. From my first days on Windows CardSpace to my last days on EngThrive, it’s been a privilege to work across so many incredible teams. I’ve had the chance to work with some truly exceptional people along the way, and I'm always amazed at how many have gone out of their way to help me over the years. Patrick L. liked thisPatrick L. liked thisL5 Offer from Google and Uber Here's the mindset you must embody to land your dream tech job: 1) LeetCode is hard for most people in the beginning Problem solving in and of itself is a skill. Learning the algorithms and data structures takes time. Don't get discouraged if you cannot solve a problem. It just means that this is new to you and you should keep going. 2) You don't need to be a genius But you do need to obsess more than anyone else. Many of these problems were first solved by actual mathematicians, so it can seem like you need to be an intellectual or something. It's about pattern recognition. That's why we have 3 extensive roadmaps to help you with this, including: - Blind 75 - NeetCode 150 - NeetCode 250 NeetCode 250 is the most beginner friendly and gets you feeling confident fast. 3) Don't underestimate consistency A big reason why many people completely quit is because they can't stay consistent. We get this a lot in our comments: "My problem is that I am consistent for a bit and then I forget what I worked on a few days ago and end up quitting." It's fine if you happen to miss a day. Life comes up. As long as you immediately get back to it, you are doing fine. Don't use missing one day as a reason to become completely inconsistent. 4) You will never feel fully ready A lot of people do endless problems, 600+, because they feel the more problems they do, the more prepared they are. But a lot of times, this can be a way of avoiding doing the interview. If you can solve most medium problems that you haven't seen before, within 20 to 25 minutes, you can probably pass most interviews. Most importantly, never, ever give up. You'll be surprised at how fast you can start getting good if you just quit quitting. -- Become A NeetCoder -> neetcode.io/li

Patrick L. liked thisPatrick L. liked thisI traded in my blue badge for an orange one this past week, marking five years since joining Amazon. At Amazon, we talk a lot about Day 1 mentality. We aim to treat each day like our first, with our best foot forward, ignorant or even outwardly defiant of any “Day 2” patterns like bureaucracy or complacency. When I first joined, I felt that Amazon’s Day 1 culture was inevitable and unavoidable. It felt like something so core to the company, it simply came with the job, and didn’t need nurture, care, or inspection. Over the past 5 years, I’ve learned that I was very wrong. The world around us is constantly trying to push us towards Day 2. A growing company constantly wanes towards bureaucracy and complacency. The pull to become like the masses is what is inevitable and unavoidable. But somehow, Amazon still prevails to attract the best talent, take big audacious risks, redefine industries, and make customers lives better and better. Amazon’s leaders and long time employees, including me now, know how hard it is to keep each day feeling like Day 1. Despite this, we keep trying. It’s what keeps us excited, engaged, and motivated to start each day. For many, that Day 1 feeling is probably why they still work here. I know it’s surely been the reason I’ve been here for 5 years, still bright-eyed about tomorrow. To those newly joining Amazon, I envy you. There is something special about your first few days. You help remind us what Day 1 really feels like. Here is to the next 5 years!

So much of what I’ll take with me from them came from the people, experiences, classes, mentors, and opportunities that made this time what it was. There’s no way to thank everyone who had a hand in that, but gratitude feels like the best place to start. With that, I’m excited to share that after graduation, I’ll be heading from Florida to California to join Apple full-time as a Software Engineer. Really excited for what’s ahead, and as always, go gators!

He tells everyone she crushed on him. 🤭 And she admits, he was cute and a great guy. They became friends but lost touch. That’s when UCR alumna Kameela Adkins ‘02 stepped in. In 2003, she set them up on a mini UCR reunion via Yahoo Messenger! 😂 🖥️ From that day on, they were together. They married in 2010 & welcomed a son, Rex, 4 years later. The journey to get here had its share of uncertainties, challenges, and times where I had to step out of my comfort zone and start over. But every step taught me something valuable and pushed me closer to where I wanted to be. I am truly grateful for all the support, encouragement, and belief from family, friends, and mentors along the way. Excited for this new chapter, new learnings, and everything that lies ahead.
