The outdoor industry is navigating a period of incredible change, and I believe deeply in the power of collaboration as we think about what comes next. OIA plays an important role in bringing our industry together to strengthen our businesses, support our communities and help ensure the outdoors continue to thrive for generations to come. Throughout my time at Cotopaxi, I’ve seen firsthand what’s possible when purpose and business strategy work together. I believe we have an opportunity to build a stronger, more resilient outdoor industry while continuing to protect the purpose and values that make this community so special. Lindsay Shumlas shared this“They know who they are and why they do what they do.” I loved this reflection from Brendan Vaughan following our conversation at Fast Company Innovation Festival because it gets at something I think about often at Cotopaxi: purpose only matters if it holds up when things get hard. I joined Brendan and Jason LaRose, CEO of Bombas, for a conversation about leading with purpose while building and scaling a business. Jason put it simply: “If you want to donate more, you have to sell more.” That really resonated with me. Purpose and performance aren’t opposing forces. For purpose to create meaningful, lasting impact, it has to be authentically built into the business and supported by a healthy, growing company. Later, I joined Emily Heyward of Red Antler, Alex Wiltschko of Osmo, Chase Harrow of Elm Biosciences and Abbie de la Campa of Spotify for a conversation about brand loyalty and what makes people genuinely connect with a brand. Two very different conversations, but a similar takeaway: the strongest brands know who they are, stay consistent in how they show up and build businesses capable of sustaining what they believe in. Lindsay Shumlas shared thisAt Cotopaxi, we believe public lands are worth protecting. As a Utah founded brand, places like Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante are more than iconic landscapes. They are culturally significant, support Tribal communities, strengthen local economies and inspire people from around the world to get outside. We support maintaining protections for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments for many years and recognize the important role these landscapes play for communities, outdoor recreation, and future generations. We are proud to stand alongside The Conservation Alliance, Outdoor Industry Association and our peers across the outdoor industry in support of these remarkable places. The photos shared here were provided by my colleague Chris Nance, a member of the Cotopaxi team who has spent meaningful time in and around Bears Ears. One of the highlights of the trip was participating in a media panel with Stephan, Hojin Jung, CEO of Nelson Sports, and Insu Jung, Chairman of Dong-In. I am grateful to both leaders and their teams for their partnership, stewardship of the brand and commitment to building something meaningful together. Over the course of the summit, outdoor industry leaders held 50 meetings with members of Congress and staff, bringing a strong, unified voice to the issues shaping our businesses, our communities, and the future of outdoor recreation. Across those conversations, we reinforced a simple idea: The future of the outdoor economy depends on policies that expand access to the outdoors, strengthen recreation infrastructure, support public lands, and create a more stable and predictable environment for businesses to plan, invest, and grow. It was encouraging to see leaders from across the industry show up with thoughtfulness, clarity, and a shared commitment to advocating for what matters, not only to our companies, but also to the people and places that make outdoor recreation possible. The outdoor industry has both the economic strength and the shared purpose to matter in Washington, and this week was a powerful reminder of what collective advocacy can do. Lindsay Shumlas reacted on thisLindsay Shumlas reacted on this“If you want to donate more, you have to sell more.” That quote from Jason LaRose, CEO of Bombas, was typical of a session I moderated this morning to kick off the 12th annual Fast Company Innovation Festival, our biggest event of the year. 🧦 Bombas was founded on the “buy one, donate one” model of mission-driven retail. For every pair of socks Bombas sells, the company donates a pair. (They’ve donated 215,000 “essential clothing items” – socks, t-shirts, and underwear – to date.) LaRose was answering a question I’d asked about how he manages to not let the company’s values slip as he pushes it to expand around the world. Why do I call the answer “typical” of the panel? Because of its direct, no-B.S. pragmatism. 🎒 His co-panelist, Cotopaxi CEO Lindsay Shumlas, was just as straightforward. Purpose isn’t an add-on at Cotopaxi, known for its colorful outdoor gear and policy of donating at least one percent of its profits to the fight against global poverty. That mission has been baked into the company’s cake since it was founded in 2014. As Shumlas said, the work has to be “authentically built through everything we do”—not treated as a marketing layer that disappears when conditions get difficult. As the live audience may have noticed, I tried to get LaRose and Shumlas to comment on the many companies that draped themselves in a cloak of social goodness when that was in peak vogue a few years ago, only to quietly retreat when the trend shifted. Neither accepted my not-so-subtle invitation. I got the sense they weren’t just trying to avoid saying something controversial. Their focus simply isn’t on that outside noise. They know who they are and why they do what they do, and they see no tension between doing well and doing good. I wish more CEOs agreed with them.
