I spent Monday night with the MKT Honorary Marketing Society at UW–Madison, and I’m still thinking about the conversations we had. They were engaged, curious, and incredibly candid about what’s on their minds right now. And one theme kept coming up over and over again: They feel stuck in a catch-22. On one side, they’re being told AI is going to replace entry-level jobs. On the other, some professors and mentors are strictly prohibiting AI use because it might keep them from learning the “right” skills. So the message they’re hearing is basically: “You’ll be expected to use this in your career… but don’t use it now.” That’s a tough place to be. If we know AI will be part of their day-to-day work, how do we actually prepare them for that reality? How do we teach them to use it thoughtfully and responsibly instead of just telling them to avoid it? How do we empower them instead of leaving them feeling panicked and paralyzed? Here’s the encouraging part. I’ve done versions of this talk for the last 5+ years, and I’ve never seen a group more engaged, more driven, or more determined. They’re asking smart questions. They’re putting in the extra effort. They’re trying to figure this out, even when the path isn’t clear. It gave me a lot of hope. If this is the next generation of marketers, I’m feeling a lot more optimistic about where we’re headed, AI and all. And if anyone is hiring for entry-level roles, I've got a few names I'd throw in the mix!
