The Wine: A blend of 51% Grenache, from 100-year-old vines, 34% Shiraz, from 65-year-old vines and 15% Mataro (also known as Mourvedre) from 140-year-old vines aged for 16 months in neutral French oak. The grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted before a gentle press and natural fermentation. There were 428 cases made in the 2022 vintage. The Estate: Z Wines is the creation of two sisters, Janelle and Kristen Zerk, who grew up on an old vineyard in the Barossa Valley. The Zerk family were early pioneers of the Barossa settling and planting vines over 160 years ago. With five generations of Barossa wine heritage in their bloodlines the two sisters were destined to be a part of the winemaking history and culture of the Barossa Valley. Janelle is the winemaker and graduated from the University of Adelaide with a degree in Oenology. After studying in Tuscany, Burgundy and Sonoma she spent 12 years making wine in the Barossa before taking the helm as winemaker for Z Wines. Kristen is her sister and business partner. All wines are made in small batches with each bottle individually numbered. Tasting Notes: Color: Dense maroon-ruby. Aromas: Bright red berries, strawberry jam and potpourri spice. Flavor & Texture: The juicy, fruit-forward palate shows red fruits, cinnamon and warm spices. Mellow tannins create a soft and silky mouthfeel. My time at Salve has shaped me into the person I am today. With experiences in leadership and my science curriculum, I’ve learned a great deal that I’m sure will guide me in the future. In the meantime, I will be working and applying to graduate school programs to futher my education in medical sciences.
