We had pool days, a great group dinner, and more laughs than I can count. It was a chance to step away from the desk and just enjoy each other. My biggest takeaway? Mark Jones liked thisMark Jones liked thisThank You Thursday! Over the last few weeks, I’ve shined some light on the people behind the scenes who make Goosehead what it is. Service, technology, and today, quality control. This week I want to recognize Andrew Armstrong. Andrew has been a great friend of mine throughout my three years at Goosehead, but more importantly, he has played a huge role in pioneering and growing our quality control department. There are a lot of things that happen after an agent sells a policy that clients and referral partners never see. Making sure policies are written correctly, submitted properly, entered into our systems correctly, and ultimately making sure we as agents are doing things the right way. Andrew and his team are a huge part of that. I have messaged Andrew late at night more times than I can count over the last few years. Questions about policies being submitted, how to handle something correctly, or fixing an issue. Andrew is always willing to help and always willing to make sure it gets done right. I’ve watched Andrew work from early mornings to late nights, and over the last three years I’ve seen an incredible amount of growth in both him and the entire quality control department. Andrew has helped lead that charge and has become an integral piece of Goosehead. He’s also taken me out to lunch on a few of my many trips down to Texas, and somewhere along the way he became more than just someone I work with. He became a true friend. Mark Jones liked thisMark Jones liked thisThis is not the moment for pacing. This is the moment for acceleration. I believe the push from the big AI labs to “slow down” isn’t about safety… it’s actually about regulatory capture. They’re watching the explosion in open source and they want regulators to save them. My take on @Bloomberg: The big labs are not worried about recursive self-improvement. They are worried about open source. Token share for the frontier labs is dropping faster than anyone expected. Open source is rising faster than anyone expected. That is why NVIDIA just paid a record price for Hugging Face. Coming from healthcare, I know what regulatory capture looks like, and this looks and smells like regulatory capture. At the same time, the scaling laws are not paying off the way the big labs promised. Verticalized, sector specific small models with the right harnesses are starting to beat general purpose giants on the tasks that matter. That is very good news for healthcare, defense, biology, and every other domain where general intelligence was never really the point. So my POV on the Xi and Trump meeting later this month is simple. Put the guardrails on where AI is allowed to touch (defense, biology, gain of function, clinical decisions), not on who is allowed to build. Slowing US development while China goes all in on open source is not safety. It is a gift.
