Mark Crowley shared thisWhat a great time at Black Hat this week. Seeing the Trinity Cyber team in action, keeping up with the competition, and meeting potential financial partners. As a #CFO, I encourage my team to understand our company as a whole (go backstage?) to become better business partners. To go beyond paying a bill or sending an invoice. Learn about that vendor. Understand who are our customers. See how our product works and delivers unique value. #Finance has a great perspective at the intersection of all parts of the company, and that's an incredible learning opportunity. Help your team step back from the spreadsheet and see the big picture. #cybersecurity #BHUSA William Mabon Jonathan G. Nicholas DiPace

With Trinity Cyber, catch what others don't! #cybersecurityMark Crowley shared thisVPNs were built for a different era — before hybrid workforces, cloud infrastructure, and constantly evolving threats. Yet VPNs and firewalls remain one of the most exploited entry points in the enterprise. Conventional ZTNA improves access control, but most solutions fail to inspect the actual session content moving through approved connections. In this new eBook, learn how Trinity Cyber combines identity-aware ZTNA with Full Content Inspection (FCI) to: 🔹Inspect live traffic in real-time 🔹Remove malicious content before compromise 🔹Reduce alert fatigue and operational complexity 🔹Deliver true preemptive cyber defense Download The VPN Replacement Playbook to see why organizations are moving beyond reactive security 👇 https://hubs.la/Q04gwr630 #Cybersecurity #ZeroTrust #VPNReplacement

Mark Crowley shared thisAnother amazing MIT Sloan CFO Summit, Est. 2003 in the books. This year's theme highlighted the role of the #CFO as a leader through change. Special thanks to Nelson Repenning for his insights on dynamic work design from his book, "There’s Got to Be a Better Way," and to Jason Child, CFO of Arm, for discussing #AI powered business transformation. As a member of the planning committee, I'm grateful each year to work with an incredible team of fellow Sloanies, led by Jeremy Seidman. Mark Crowley shared thisInternships have come a long way since my mailroom days at Merrill Lynch. Today’s internships play a crucial role in shaping the workforce of tomorrow and fostering growth in emerging sectors, just as Caroline looks to bring together the worlds of #finance and #energy. Hot off one summer #internship, she’s already on the hunt for summer 2026! #PE #VC #bankingMark Crowley shared thisWhat's one way to stay energized during the summer? Work at a utility! This month, I wrapped up my internship with the New England Sustainability team at National Grid. Beyond gaining a window into the operations of a gas and electric utility, I saw the value that sustainability reporting and electrification initiatives can bring to a company and its customers. Here's a recap! ⚡Dove into electricity usage and emissions data from National Grid’s electric vehicle fleet. ⚡Crisscrossed Massachusetts and New York to visit transmission towers, control rooms, and power plants. ⚡Joined New York and UK teams for a week-long offsite in Boston to facilitate an operating model change for US Sustainability (complete with Red Sox game and duck boats). ⚡Organized and hosted the "2025 Live Hive Tour" with The Best Bees Company, teaching the biodiversity benefits of onsite AI-enabled "smart hives," part of National Grid's nature commitments. ⚡Joined nearly 150 interns for daily webinars, community service events, and networking opportunities. ⚡Completed 15 informational interviews with employees across the company to learn about energy careers paths from finance to forecasting. Thank you to Michael DeNoia, Matthew Dixon, and Christopher Beltz for welcoming me onto an incredible team and supporting me through every project. And many thanks to Stella Schram for incredible mentorship on energy efficiency policy and professional development. What's next? Just arrived in Washington DC for a fall semester "abroad" to explore the impact of federal level action on US energy and financial sectors. Stay tuned! #Sustainability #Energy #Internship #EnergyCareers #Superpowered

Mark Crowley liked thisTimely insights from Ronald Gula of Gula Tech Adventures regarding why the NetScaler ADC and Gateway zero days underscore a growing trend of attackers targeting the edge. Ron also highlights how Trinity Cyber edits exploits out of live traffic with countermeasures that act as immediate patches for emerging threats. Watch now ⬇️Mark Crowley liked thisCitrix just got its fourth three-day patch deadline from CISA this year. On Sept. 27, Citrix disclosed two NetScaler ADC and Gateway zero-days. Both are CVSS 9.5. Neither requires a password. Both were being exploited before the advisory came out. Shadowserver says more than 23,000 NetScalers are exposed to the internet. But this isn’t really a Citrix story. It’s an edge story. From Sept. 14 through Sept. 27, 9 of the 19 vulnerabilities added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog hit gateways, firewalls, routers, or the systems used to manage them. That makes sense. The edge is a great target. It has to be exposed to the internet. It handles sessions, tokens, and credentials. It’s parsing hostile traffic all day long. And a lot of these appliances don’t have the kind of endpoint visibility we’re used to on servers and laptops. They’re also hard to patch. Taking down the edge can mean taking down the business. And patching isn’t the same thing as remediation. If somebody got in before you patched, they may still be there afterward. One thing I think more security teams should focus on is procurement. When you buy this stuff, ask how many of the vendor’s vulnerabilities have landed in the KEV catalog. Keep management interfaces off the internet. Treat these appliances like credential stores. Have an assume-compromised playbook ready before you need it. Most importantly, think about how you buy time between exploitation and patching. vRon walks through it in this week’s episode: https://lnkd.in/g-CEzF5b Disclosure: Trinity Cyber and Threater are Gula Tech Adventures portfolio companies, and I sit on both boards. The Gula Tech Foundation has also given a grant to Shadowserver. You can’t patch your way out of a procurement decision.Citrix Got a 3-Day Patch Deadline. Mark Crowley liked thisI'm stepping into the role of CEO of Solaris Advisory, and the premise we started with in 2021 hasn't changed. Mid-market and PE-backed companies deserve senior technical accounting support without the overhead, rotation and handoffs that come with larger firms. Every engagement is still led by someone at manager level or above, all ex-Big 4, and we remain privately held with no outside capital. What changes is where my focus goes. My day-to-day is now Solaris: the CFOs and Controllers we work with on transactions, technical reporting, ERP transitions and gaps in the finance seat, and building the team that supports them. I'm proud of what we've built at Roessel Joy to date, and its day-to-day is in very good hands. If you're a finance leader with something significant on the horizon for 2027, I'd welcome the conversation. #AccountingAdvisory #FinanceLeadership #PrivateEquityMark Crowley liked thisBig changes. Exciting growth. A new chapter for our leadership! We’re excited to announce that Chris Joy has been named CEO of Roessel Joy, and Jonas Roessel has been named CEO of solaris. As both firms continue to grow, each will now have a dedicated CEO focused on its next phase. At Roessel Joy, Chris will lead the firm forward, building on the culture, client relationships, and service standards that have defined it since its founding. "Roessel Joy has grown tremendously since we started the company, but what I'm most proud of is the team and culture we've built along the way. I'm looking forward to building on that foundation. There's a lot of opportunity ahead, and I'm confident in what we can accomplish together." – Chris Joy, CEO of Roessel Joy At Solaris, Jonas will lead the firm's growth as it expands its advisory work with finance leaders at PE-backed and mid-market companies. "Solaris has a strong foundation, and this role allows me to put my full focus on where we take the firm next. My priority is scaling the business, expanding our reach, and building the kind of advisory partner finance teams can rely on for the long term." – Jonas Roessel, CEO of solaris. Mark Crowley liked thisMark Crowley liked thisHiring a $300K CFO into a $50K team is not a strategy. It's a setup for failure, and it happens more than anyone admits. Came across a post from a Nigerian financial analyst that put this bluntly. His point: when someone moves from a Big 4 firm into a senior finance role, they need a team that can actually match the output expected of them. You can't hand someone a top tier package, surround them with an undertrained, underpaid team, and expect Big 4 level results to just appear. The post laid out exactly how this plays out. The new hire ends up doing the high level work and the operational work, because the team underneath them isn't equipped to carry their share. That leads to burnout. Burnout leads to resignation. And then the same people who watched it happen use it as proof that the "big shot" couldn't handle the pressure. This tracks with something a lot of executives get wrong. Talent is not just about the person you bring in. It's about the system you build around them. A CFO's output is only as strong as the analysts, controllers, and finance ops people supporting them. If that layer is weak, you haven't hired a transformation, you've hired a very expensive individual contributor who will eventually burn out trying to do everyone's job at once. This shows up constantly in mid-market companies. Leadership wants Big 4 rigor, Big 4 reporting, Big 4 speed, but budgets for the supporting team like it's still a mom and pop operation. Then when the senior hire can't singlehandedly close that gap, the narrative becomes "they weren't a good fit" instead of "we didn't invest in the infrastructure needed for them to succeed." A few things worth sitting with if you're in a position to hire senior finance talent: Output is a team sport. One strong hire cannot compensate for five underpowered ones. If you're budgeting for a senior hire, budget for the team upgrade too. It doesn't have to happen on day one, but it has to be part of the plan. Ask what "success" actually requires operationally before you make the hire. Not what you hope it requires. Pay attention to attrition patterns. If skilled senior hires keep leaving within a year, the problem is rarely just the person. None of this is really about finance specifically. It's about what happens when expectations scale faster than investment. Worth remembering the next time someone asks why a great hire didn't work out.

Mark Crowley liked thisAt Cascade Technologies, we never set out to build a security stack with a dozen tools in it. It happened one client need at a time. A VPN here, DNS filtering there, an IPS, an MDR, another license renewal. Each one made sense on its own. Then one day I looked up and the whole team had become orchestrators. We were judged on whether we missed an alert, and we spent the day jumping between Chrome tabs to make sure we didn't. That's the part of tool sprawl nobody puts on the invoice. It costs you in deployment, in daily operations, in alert triage, and most of all in the customers you can't take on because your people are buried. Stack bloat looks like a tooling problem, but it's really a P&L problem. I wrote about how MSPs can pull nine of those tools into one platform and get their technicians back to real work. 👇Mark Crowley liked thisSecurity stack bloat drives up costs, fragments operations, and leaves teams spending more time managing consoles, renewals, and alert queues than reducing risk. Trinity Cyber helps MSPs and security teams break that cycle by consolidating nine product categories into one fully managed platform. The result is a simpler security stack, stronger protection, and less operational overhead for customers. 🔰 Cramer S. breaks down the real cost of security stack bloat and the products Trinity Cyber can remove, replace, or retire. Everybody loves the acquisition Very few people love the integration That’s where the value gets built Accounting firm multiples have moved fast in recent years Because buyers see future advisory margin, future growth, and the chance to build platforms in a fragmented industry But that value only gets realized if integration works. Most accounting firms are still small. Roughly 80% sit at $1M in revenue or below The opportunity is obvious. The execution is not Quanto helps accounting firms grow with smoother onboarding and stronger operations 🎙️ Anderson Petergeorge, CPA, Cofounder, Quanto on Fondo START pod (full ep in comments)

Operational debt isn’t invisible. Sponsors price it in on Day 0. The question is whether that spend compounds value or drag. You see it in the budget lines before you see it in the board deck. Tech spend climbs. Output doesn’t. Then headcount rises to fill the gaps that technology was supposed to close. Look deeper: CapEx should build the future: new platforms, IP, automation that scales. OpEx should run efficiently: every dollar should move throughput forward. When CapEx goes to short-life fixes and OpEx gets eaten by maintenance, you’re paying interest on your own systems. That interest shows up as: Slower order-to-cash, Lower conversion rates, Declining service quality. That’s the cost of servicing technical debt instead of converting it. The fix isn’t complicated. Follow the money. Measure the output. Every dollar in technology should either create a new capability or expand throughput. That’s how you turn debt into leverage. And leverage into lift.

The PE Operating Partner Myth That's Costing Firms Millions If your operating partner is primarily showing up to board meetings offering "strategic guidance," you're leaving massive value on the table. The data is striking: Since 2010, 47% of PE value creation comes from operations, up from just 18% in the 1980s. Yet many firms still treat operating partners like elder statesmen offering wisdom from the sidelines. Here's what nobody's saying loudly and often enough: The best operating partners aren't advisors. They're operators. They're on-site 50%+ of the time, embedded with teams, implementing actual work, not crafting PowerPoint strategies. They're running FP&A models at 11 PM. Stepping in as interim CEOs. The paradox: Elite operating partners need strategic altitude to see patterns across investments AND tactical willingness to execute in the weeds. They need deep functional expertise plus emotional intelligence to build trust in weeks, not months. And critically, they need autonomy to operate. The best operating partners share striking psychological profiles, often INTJ-A types. Why? They combine systems thinking with decisive action. They diagnose complex dysfunction AND drive through resistance. They're comfortable with ambiguity in turnarounds while maintaining clarity in stable companies. Value creation in both stable and distressed situations requires independent strategic thinking, comfort with high autonomy, pattern recognition across businesses, and assertiveness to implement change without consensus-seeking paralysis. The role is evolving rapidly toward specialisation. Firms are hiring operating partners with specific functional depth who can immediately diagnose what's broken and deploy proven playbooks. The uncomfortable truth? Portfolio companies don't need another strategist. They need someone who's done the work, can show them how, and will stay until it's institutionalised. Three questions for PE leaders: 1. Can your operating partners articulate measurable value created in the last 90 days? (Not "advised", implemented) 2. Are they spending 60-70% of their time on direct collaboration, or are they professional board members? 3. Have you given them genuine autonomy to drive change, or do they need consensus for every initiative? The firms winning today have operating partners with dirt under their fingernails from building alongside management teams. Value creation isn't a spectator sport. #PrivateEquity #OperatingPartners #ValueCreation #Leadership

The SaaS CFO
6K followers
One of the biggest challenges in private equity–backed companies? The reluctance to put fresh equity into an existing investment. In this episode of The SaaS CFO Podcast, Matt Blumberg (CEO @ Markup AI) breaks down a critical lesson learned from his own experience and from advising other PE-backed CEOs: Mid-market PE firms are often built on the assumption that the business is already profitable and doesn’t need more cash. But when a company hits turbulence—COVID, market shifts, product pivots, a needed GTM change—it becomes almost impossible to reinvest if you’re only producing $1–2M of EBITDA and carrying debt. Without capital flexibility, real transformation is off the table. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone operating in or considering private equity ownership. It’s 2025, yet most NAV processes still depend on copy–paste. That’s not “operations”… that’s a liability waiting to surface. Talk to any fund accounting or ops team and you’ll hear the same story: Multiple spreadsheets. Manual fee and expense calculations. Late adjustments. And the constant fear that one wrong cell could trigger a client complaint or, worse, an operational loss. The impact is bigger than people admit - delayed NAVs, reputational damage, and avoidable audit findings. This is why we built NAV-Secure to take the manual risk out of the equation: AI-powered NAV validation to catch arithmetic and logic errors instantly Automated fee & expense rules with full audit trails and version control A pilot KPI that targets a 50-75% reduction in manual NAV adjustments within 60 days If your NAV depends on spreadsheets, you’re not managing risk - you’re hoping nothing breaks.

Most family office principals don’t set out to become the operators of a complex institutional structure. Yet that's often what the role demands. Staffing, governance, vendor oversight, cost management—it compounds quickly. Understanding how to balance what stays in-house with what gets outsourced is foundational work, not a detail to revisit later. This article offers a look at how experienced principals are approaching that question: https://lnkd.in/eXjqWrRe
