Miranda Bennett shared thisIt was such an honor to deliver the keynote address at Austin Resource Recovery’s annual Connect + Share conference through City of Austin!Miranda Bennett shared thisThis week's Circular Connect and Share mini-conference gathered more than 30 business leaders and entrepreneurs helping Austin work towards its zero waste goal. Keynote Miranda Bennett rallied the group to reflect on the values of environmental, financial and cultural sustainability--and the importance of preventing burnout. Other panelists shared how they prioritize community-building within their business models. Attendees shared, learned, and connected. They also got to hear about growth opportunities from the City's Circular Economy program, like the upcoming cycle of Circular Austin Accelerator (with applications opening Oct. 9!) Miranda Bennett shared thisI am stilling carrying so much from this conversation with Alex Elle—Miranda Bennett shared thisAfter a spiteful manager tried to humiliate her in front of her co-workers, @Alex Elle walked out from her job—an extraordinarily brave thing for a young single mom in her early 20s. Shortly after, she was booked for her first speaking engagement after self-publishing a book of poetry. Thirteen years and millions in book sales later, the New York Times bestselling author sat down with me to trace the line of her creative career, as well as her journey through motherhood. Part One of our conversation is now live. https://lnkd.in/gKXQri3i

Miranda Bennett shared thisI always listen when Harper Poe shares her take—Miranda Bennett shared thisI've seen a lot of takes this week on Shein buying Everlane. I spent more time than I expected reading them...and thinking. BTW I really appreciate Caroline Priebe's perspective on this, and on sustainable fashion more broadly. But the more I sat with it, the more my thinking drifted away from Everlane entirely. Because as someone working in the traditional craft/artisan sector, I'm not sure this is actually my reckoning to claim. The artisan world has long aligned itself with sustainable fashion and ethical home decor. And for the most part I understand why...the vocabulary overlaps, the values feel adjacent. But the inputs and goals are quite different. Sustainable fashion is largely about doing less damage within the same growth model. Traditional craft, when it's working the way it should, is about something else: slow, intentional, regenerative, generational knowledge, preserved cultural heritage, stories and techniques that live inside objects and take lifetimes to learn. So yes, it's a shame when a sustainable fashion darling (however sustainable they were Everlane definitely excelled at marketing) gets absorbed by a fast fashion giant. But perhaps those of us working to spotlight and support traditional craftspeople can rest a little easier. What we're building belongs to a different conversation. Perhaps we don't need to spend so much time mourning something that was never ours to begin with. Link to Proud Mary LLC full Substack below. Miranda Bennett shared thisThis week I published our first call-in episode on the Creativity in the Time of Capitalism podcast and it was such an incredible experience. I am so grateful to everyone who participated. Our focus in this suite of releases has been about making mistakes, how they make us feel, and what we learn. In my background research on this topic, one theme has emerged again and again: mistakes are unavoidable. Creating environments where there is safety in sharing and care towards repair is the best way to eliminate unnecessary repetition of the same mistakes, and establish a culture of transparency. Teams where admissions are not met with punitive repercussions invite the lessons out into the open and foster environments of trust and mutual respect.Miranda Bennett shared thisThe first episode from the Creativity in the Time of Capitalism hotline aired earlier this week, and it is a very different format from our usual interviews. This time callers from the audience shared their own stories, in this case about mistakes they have made, often at work, in addition to how they felt and what they learned. It was such a healing experience to invite these disclosures, and such a beautiful reminder of what happens when we acknowledge our vulnerability rather than obscuring it. My deepest thanks to each participant for their brave candor, I hope this is freeing for our listening audience as well. The episode is currently available to all of our paid subscribers through the attached link. https://lnkd.in/eBV8xhb9

Miranda Bennett shared thisI love exploring the spaces between perception and lived reality. In a timeline defined by digital identity, the disparity between the two often grows in direct proportion to our visibility, especially for founders. I am grateful as ever to Lauren Haynes for speaking with me about navigating that deficit in her own lived experience building her brand Wooden Spoon Herbs, and how she trued up a lifestyle and relationship to her work that could bridge that gap.Miranda Bennett shared this“Success looked good for a while, but I was using it to avoid a lot of other issues in my life and it actually became a form of self-harm.” — Lauren Haynes For a generation raised on “girl boss” ambition and the imperative of hustle culture, overwork didn’t just signal success—it defined it. The burnout epidemic we are currently seeing across career sectors is endemic to this attitude's aftermath. It is often only in retrospect that we realize that a professional life engineered for output usually comes at the expense of sustainability, clarity, and care. At the heart of this project is an interrogation of what happens when the model stops working, and what it takes to build something more honest and durable in its place. In my most recent conversation, Lauren Haynes reflects on building Wooden Spoon Herbs, the personal cost embedded in its early success, and the harder, quieter work of redefining her relationship to both the company and herself. https://lnkd.in/erJcQFKuA Conversation with Lauren Haynes, founder of Wooden Spoon Herbs, Part One.A Conversation with Lauren Haynes, founder of Wooden Spoon Herbs, Part One.

Miranda Bennett shared thisIt was such a pleasure to speak with Alyza Brown, LCSW recently about how to navigate mistakes from a place of compassion, and with an emphasis on repair rather than perfection. An ideal way to kick off to the new Ask an Expert series on Creativity in the Time of Capitalism ✨Miranda Bennett shared thisThis week, we are discussing how to recover from mistakes. In my last conversation with Wooden Spoon Herbs founder, Lauren Haynes, Lauren bravely shared that when it came time to deliver her first national order to a major retailer, the rollout was compromised by an utterly human math error. When I asked Lauren offline how she felt the moment she realized it, she shared “breathless, incompetent, panicked, crumpled.” I think we have all been there. But after the panic, what comes next? How do we move forward? I spoke with therapist Alyza Brown, LCSW about how to both stop the shame spiral and to rebuild our trust of self. https://lnkd.in/gayWABaS

Unveiled at the United Nations, the Nest Standards became the backbone of Nest’s Ethical Handcraft Program and the Nest Seal of Ethical Handcraft, establishing the first set of metrics widely adopted to protect handworkers in informal supply chains. This wasn’t just a new set of standards; it was a step toward making dignity, safety, fair working conditions, and economic opportunity part of the foundation of handcraft work around the world. Miranda Bennett reacted on thisSuch a huge week, as we rolled out Reader's Digest’s October/November issue, starting with our all-surface cover story on Josh Groban — the first celebrity we’ve had on the cover in 13 years!Miranda Bennett reacted on thisJosh Groban sat down with Reader's Digest for an exclusive conversation-- from standing in for Andrea Bocelli at 17 to rehearse with Celine Dion, to the junior-high solo that turned a shy kid into a singer, to two Tony nominations and the Disneyland proposal he calls the best decision of his life. Miranda Bennett reacted on thisMiranda Bennett reacted on thisAt the end of the day I’m just a girl from Austin, TX trying to “document untold stories and disrupt unjust systems.” That’s why it was such an honor this past Saturday to moderate a panel for the NYC film screening of “Cycles of Resilience” at the Bicycle Film Festival. A timely documentary about the efforts to preserve the history and stories of Black Austin through the Black History Bike Ride, amidst a violently gentrifying city. It was special to witness some of the stories and spaces I’ve been committed to elevate in my own writing and work (from Herman Sweatt and John S. Chase to Freedom Towns and the Southgate Lewis House) be centered. As we navigate ongoing conversations, questions and concerns about human rights and civil liberties, the preservation of Black stories and the protection of Black life is inextricably connected to any future that centers justice and equity. I was honored to be in conversation with Ya'Ke Smith, the film’s brilliant director, Talib Abdullahi, MBA, the film’s producer and one of the generous hearts behind BHBR, alongside Ariel Marlowe and Brandon Grant. Miranda Bennett reacted on thisMiranda Bennett reacted on thisWe have lost so many iconic people over the past month. Many of them women. Women who have led the way in art, music, philanthropy, and activism. Women that chose to live life on their own terms and in their own way. They didn't shrink to appeal to the masses but rather expanded and leaned into exactly what made them unique and the masses followed. Benita Singh and I spend a lot of time thinking about what happens when an art form or expression, rooted in a place and culture, expands into the broader world. So often traditional art/craft is encouraged to restrain in order to reach a larger audience...make it look everything else so it will appeal to everyone. Perhaps this strategy worked for a while...lean into what is trending and design accordingly. But you risk losing what makes these artistic expressions, craft traditions, cultural heritage, techniques, and material applications special (often extraordinary) in the first place. Our goal Proud Mary LLC is to give the artists we work with space, scale, and context to become even more visible, on their own creative terms. Our latest Substack explores this idea through the legacies of Dolly Parton and Yayoi Kusama. Link below! https://lnkd.in/gW6dc4vr

Miranda Bennett reacted on thisMiranda Bennett reacted on thisAs we celebrate #20YearsofImpact, we're continuing to reflect on the milestones that have helped artisan businesses move from possibility to growth! In 2016, we launched the Nest Artisan Accelerator, a first-of-its-kind 360° program designed to help artisan enterprises strengthen their businesses and expand their reach. By providing tailored support, business development resources, and critical market linkages, the program equipped participating artisans with the tools they needed to become competitive players in the worlds of home décor and fashion. For many artisan entrepreneurs, the challenge isn't a lack of talent, it's access to the resources, relationships, and industry insights that help businesses grow sustainably. The Artisan Accelerator was created to bridge that gap, connecting artisans with opportunities that could transform their businesses and unlock new pathways to success. Over the years, we've seen firsthand what happens when artisan businesses receive the right support at the right time: stronger enterprises, expanded market access, increased economic opportunity, and greater recognition for the value of handcrafted work. Miranda Bennett reacted on thisMiranda Bennett reacted on thisOne of the things we love most about building Driftful in Maine? We’re surrounded by people who already understand the value of creativity. Last week, we attended Creativity Builds Connection: Arts, Health & Well-Being in Maine, hosted by the Maine Arts Commission . The gathering brought together artists, health professionals, community leaders, and policymakers, including Congresswoman Representative Chellie Pingree and National Endowment for the Arts Chairman, Mary Anne Carter, to talk about the role creativity can play in building healthier, more connected communities. And we learned just how deeply creativity is already woven into life here: 71% of Mainers participate in creative activities — #2 in the nation. 74% have taken arts lessons — #3 in the nation. 59% have taken music lessons — #2 in the nation. 92.5% engage with arts programming through TV, radio, or the internet — #1 in the nation. For us, those numbers are more than interesting statistics. They’re a pretty compelling reason to be building Driftful right here. Driftful is based on the idea that creative expression can be a meaningful part of how we care for ourselves. You don’t need to be an artist. You don’t need to make something “good.” The value can simply be in making, slowing down, focusing your attention, trying something new, and giving your mind somewhere else to go for a while. Maine already has an extraordinary culture of creativity. We’re excited to be building something here that can help make creative expression an even more accessible part of everyday well-being. Thank you to the Maine Arts Commission for bringing this conversation and this community together. #Driftful #ArtsAndHealth #CreativeWellbeing #MaineArts #Creativity #Maine

A US textile industry operating under a new business model could work, writes Robert Antoshak, vice president, global strategic sourcing and development at GREY MATTER CONCEPTS. Shifting the focus toward responsible textile production systems on the global stage 🌏 Our Chief Impact Officer, Beth Jensen, was featured in a recent Forbes article examining how sustainability is influencing material choices in sportswear. With the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics shining a spotlight on sportswear on the global stage, Beth shared her insights on how credible data, robust material reporting, and science-based decision-making can help shift the fashion industry toward more responsible practices. Moments like this matter not because of visibility alone, but because they reflect a broader shift. Materials are increasingly understood as foundational to climate action, resilience, and credibility across the textile value chain. As sustainability becomes part of mainstream cultural conversations, the focus must remain on measurable impact, transparent data, and collective progress. Visibility can open the door, and systems change is what ultimately moves the industry forward. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gT68DpUE

Most fashion brands do not have a returns problem, they have a technical product problem. Returns are just where it becomes visible, the real problem started much earlier. In the spec that was not tight enough, in the fabric that was never properly tested in the grading that was inconsistent across the size range, in the construction standard that was never communicated to the factory. By the time a customer sends something back the decision that caused it was made weeks or months before production even started. This is what most brands miss - they focus on the return, not the root cause. Fixing the return process does not stop the next return from happening but fixing the technical decision that caused it does. This is what Drape Method does. We find the root cause. We fix the standard. We prevent the problem from existing in the first place. Because the best return is the one that never happens. I've seen sourcing teams stagnate more than once when they’re looking for “sustainable” options. 🌿 "Sustainability" is an umbrella term, and it can mean different things across brands, markets and standards. To source more effectively, decisions have to be anchored in credible standards and traceable proof. This latest guide on World Collective’s blog breaks down 9 practical ways to find textiles that actually work in real production.
