Cheers to David Scott for his relaunch of the Guerneville 5&10 in Sonoma County!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾Michael Lewis shared thisOut of the hundreds of store renovations and new store openings I have been involved in, over my 25 + years in retail, this project hit a little differently. When I took over ownership of the 77 year old Guerneville 5&10 in January, I quickly had a vision of how to update the space to meet the needs of today’s consumer while leaning into the nostalgia of a classic 5&10. Through a bit of research, I discovered that there were a few commonalities in all of the 5&10’s in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Candy counters featuring nostalgic treats, design elements such as school house light fixtures and beadboard paneling, and a TON of product across a sea of categories. In just a few weeks we revisited the floor plan, elevated our key categories and refreshed every surface. I still can’t believe we were able to fit about 20% more SKU’s on the sales floor of this already tight 1,100 square foot space. The previous owners built a very strong business in their 21 years, especially by curating the assortment to meet the needs of the local consumer in a small and seasonal resort town. Through strategic merchandising strategies, we were able to keep all of the products that customers have come to expect while curating the assortment to be a bit broader to attract new customers. A huge thank you to our renovation team, the local Guerneville community for their warm welcome to Main Street, and the countless friends and family members who pitched in to help. The kind that sits across from you over coffee, picks up the phone when you need advice, celebrates your wins, and isn’t afraid to tell you the truth. I’ve been fortunate to find that in Vivian Robillard, Kent Montgomery and Andy Nava throughout my career at PepsiCo. Each of them has shaped my career and leadership in a different way. They’ve challenged me to think bigger, reminded me to stay humble, encouraged me through difficult moments, and helped me become a better leader, teammate, and person. But beyond their wisdom, they’re simply some of the funniest people I know. Every time we’re together, I know I’m guaranteed to laugh. A lot. 😂 Their ability to balance high performance with authenticity and joy is something I deeply admire. One lesson I’ve learned throughout my career is that no one reaches the next level alone. The best leaders intentionally surround themselves with people who will invest in their growth and hold them accountable. I've started this post about six different ways and none of them feel like enough, so I'll just say what's true. I'm grateful. To Zapier’s People Team: This is the most human-centered people team on the planet, and the most technically capable. It’s just incredible to step back and consider what we’ve built and the pace at which you’re raising the bar. I’m proud to know each of you. I’m equally proud that, rather than hiring external leadership to fill my shoes, we’re betting on our existing People LT (team photo below!). That says everything you need to know about the calibre of this team. To our CEO, Wade: Thank you for trusting me with Zapier’s most precious assets: Our people and our culture. You pushed me to be the best version of myself. We’ve both gotten sharper, together. This partnership is legendary. For the Chief AI Transformation Officer role I’ve been honored to hold: Here too, it’s an embarrassment of riches. We didn't run an external search. We sold sketchbooks to raise money for art supplies. We marketed school programs promoting good behavior. She forced me to think bigger than myself. She held me accountable when I slacked. She even called my mother to make sure my gifted school application got turned in. She saw my potential. She saw me. Ms. Ebel is one of the reasons I do the work. Every child deserves a teacher who dreams big for them. Thank you, Ms. Ebel.
