Hidden Gems is a beverage company focused on creating a more sustainable food system by finding creative ways to use the parts of food we commonly throw away. In my time at X, the moonshot factory, we’d constantly ask ourselves the question, “how might we go 10X bigger, faster, sooner, better?” In this case, I’m thrilled that we were able to help 100X this effort. We are also very excited for the first initial grantees - the Upcycled Food Association, the Food Recovery Network, and Hidden Gems. But we’re not there yet. ReFED’s analysis shows that we’ll need an annual investment of $14 billion every year for 10 years in the United States across sectors to achieve our 50% reduction in food waste per SDG12.3. Yet, $14 billion a year will deliver $73 billion in annual net economic benefit. That’s a 5X return on the economy, society and the environment! Nam Lee liked thisNam Lee liked thisThis is what "in stock" looks like. Our shoppers walked into this Target this week auditing the RTD tea set for a client. Their brand wasn't on the shelf. Neither were most of their competitors. Five shelves of empty pushers. Price tags for products that aren't there. Somewhere, a retailer portal is reporting healthy inventory for every one of these SKUs, because the cases are in the back room, or on a truck, or counted wrong three weeks ago and nobody has reconciled it since. The BI dashboard says you're in distribution. The velocity report says you're moving slow. The buyer sees the velocity report and starts asking questions about your slot. Retailer data tells you what the system believes. It can't tell you what the shopper sees. And the shopper is the only one who decides whether you get bought. Every brand missing from this photo is losing sales it will never know it lost. The reorder algorithm will read that as weak demand. And at the next reset, some of them will lose the slot for good. You can't manage what you can't see. Get eyes on the shelf.

So for #TOTC 2026, we created the Unofficial Tales of the Cocktail 2026 Survival Kit: reusable cooling bra inserts for the people literally carrying the drinks industry on their chests. Designed by our breast friends at Quaker City Mercantile, the custom kits were gifted to a curated crew of media, bartenders, and industry mates throughout the week — equal parts practical and cheeky. The goal was simple: create something people would actually use, talk about, and not throw away. A little PR. A little survival gear.
