Nuzi Barkatally shared thisWe have had so many amazing women share their stories as part of our series: What I wish another woman told me about... To conclude this series, Sophie Nazerian and I are sharing our own. ✨ I thought it was important to share my experience going through the egg freezing process as someone who has an autoimmune condition as many of the immune-modulating medications we are on pose risks to pregnancy and it is important to advocate for yourself by having a conversation about your fertility with your doctor as part of your treatment plan. I know I wish I had this conversation sooner. Instead, I had to make a last minute decision to do egg freezing before I started a new medication. Here is what I wish other women knew. My full story is in our substack link in the comments below.

Nuzi Barkatally shared thisThe OB clinic that was supposed to catch Arielle Radin Pulverman, PhD's infection never did. She called them daily with fevers and pain so bad she couldn't lie down. They weren't concerned. It took an ER visit and a CT scan to find the antibiotic-resistant abscess growing in her pelvis after a crash c-section. Arielle shares how the medical system isn't designed to keep you safe, and the way clinics triage over the phone makes you not want to go in. So the advocacy falls on you, and whoever's standing next to you. She survived eleven nights in the hospital with her baby because her husband, mother, and a night nurse traded off watching them around the clock. Nobody tells you that you might need a full support team just to get through recovery. Or that hospitals often won't let you keep your baby without someone there full time. Arielle never budgeted for a night nurse. She needed one anyway. She's strong, sure. But she's also furious, and she should be. Survival should never have been this hard as a new mom. You can read her full story in our substack link below.

Nuzi Barkatally shared this"I think I am dying. I can feel my heart is not working properly." That's what Melissa Wear told the on-call OB at 6am, two days after giving birth, certain something was wrong and checking her own blood pressure cuff. Her heart rate had dropped to 37, and within five minutes she was surrounded by every cardiologist in the hospital. Nobody had told her this could happen. Her OB said giving birth would cure her elevated blood pressure, and when it didn't, a hospital doctor told her and her husband it was normal. Preeclampsia can develop up to six weeks after delivery, and almost nobody hears that in a birthing class. Melissa got through it. Her daughter is here, her family is whole, and she now knows exactly what to watch for. She's sharing this so the next woman doesn't push down that little voice telling them "something is wrong" before anyone believes her. Read Melissa's full story on our substack. Nuzi Barkatally shared thisWe know about postpartum depression. But did you know up to one in five women experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy? Ali Whitman shared her experience for our series, "What I wish another woman had told me." Across two pregnancies she was waking with panic attacks in the night, sometimes twice before sunrise. She couldn't eat and was losing weight at her weekly OB appointments. She describes her mind as constantly manufacturing worst-case scenarios she couldn't talk herself out of. It can be invisible to a care team. As she puts it, mental health doesn't show up on an ultrasound. Blood pressure? good. Baby? healthy. Everyone concludes you're doing beautifully… while she could barely get out of bed. She took medical leave and felt like she was admitting defeat. She sees it now as what got her and her baby to the finish line. None of the catastrophes came true. Her mother survived a bone marrow transplant and knows both grandsons. Her boys are healthy. Ali has her mind back. If you didn't know prenatal depression had a name, send this to someone. One in five means somebody you know is in it right now. Thank you Ali for sharing your story. 💗

Nuzi Barkatally shared thisWhat does it mean to advocate for yourself? Shoshana L. found a lump at 32. Her first doctor felt it and told her it "didn't feel like cancer." The biopsy came back benign. Two days later, they called to say they'd been wrong and she'd need another one. That's the moment most of us would go quiet. She'd been given good news, then a correction, then a plan. The path of least resistance was to stay put and let them redo it. But she had lost trust in this doctor. So, instead, she called her ObGyn and asked to be referred to someone else. The new doctor redid the entire workup and found invasive ductal carcinoma. Stage 1. Caught early enough to treat. This is what it means to advocate for yourself. Shoshana’s gut told her something was wrong. So she went to a doctor she trusted, and asked that person to send her to someone they'd vouch for. You are allowed to get a second opinion, to switch doctors, to look at other paths. You're allowed to leave without a reason, without a confrontation, and without telling them why. You’re allowed to trust your gut. I want to hear, have you have ever changed doctors and had it change everything? ~~~~~~ This is one in a series of women sharing the health lessons they wish another woman had told them sooner. For more of Shoshana's story, check out our substack link in the comments below.

For many people living with complex chronic illness, getting a diagnosis still leaves a fundamental question unanswered: what is driving my disease, and what will help? Chronicle Bio is combining detailed clinical + multiomics data and AI to better understand conditions including POTS, ME/CFS, and Long COVID. The goal is to uncover the underlying biology and use those insights to guide better treatment decisions. Better data and a more precise understanding of disease could change which treatments we develop, how we test them, and who ultimately benefits. Thank you to Amy Feldman and Forbes for bringing attention to this work and the patients at the heart of it.

Nuzi Barkatally reacted on thisNuzi Barkatally reacted on thisLinkedIn Peeps! I'm excited to share that I'll be speaking at HLTH USA this November in Las Vegas! I'll be on a panel titled "Redesigning the Benefits Blueprint" on Tuesday, November 17, at 1:00 pm. I'll be sharing the Velocity Stage with a phenomenal group of health benefits peers, including Amtrak's Nathan Counts, RxBenefits, Inc.'s Dr. Ritu Malhotra, PharmD, and HelloFresh's Noora Garnett. The panel will be moderated by Winston Taylor's Susan M. Nash. We'll be digging into why clinical strategy and health benefit costs can't be thought of separately, especially as the cost of some cell and gene therapies climbs toward the price of a home! The conversation will also cover how PBM contracts can be effectively renegotiated, how plan design is evolving to tackle the seemingly insurmountable issue of runaway trend, and whether stop-loss policies can hold up in light of all of this massive and rapid increase in cost. All in service of a bigger question: How did access and affordability all of a sudden become two sides of the same coin? So if you're headed to HLTH USA this year, please come join us at the Velocity Stage. I'd love to connect while I'm there! Nuzi Barkatally liked thisNuzi Barkatally liked thisExcited to share the launch of Facktor Ventures. Community health centers collectively represent the largest primary care network in the country, yet they’ve historically had far too little influence over where capital goes and what gets built. Facktor Ventures is designed to change that—bringing health centers into the investment process not just as customers or pilot partners, but as investors with a real stake in what comes next. If you’re familiar with the community health space, you likely know the depth of Facktor's relationships and experience across the sector. Building on Facktor's 20+ years working alongside community health organizations, Facktor Ventures is a natural extension of that work: helping give the organizations delivering care to underserved communities a greater voice—and an ownership stake—in the innovation being built for them. Health equity and expanding access to high-quality care have been central themes throughout my career, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to help bring this idea to life alongside an incredible team with deep roots in community health. Nuzi Barkatally reacted on thisNuzi Barkatally reacted on thisI love celebrating founders’ wins – today I’m celebrating my own: 5 years as the Founder/CEO of Grow Through Story! 🎉🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 Everything good in my entrepreneurial journey so far, everything I’m grateful for – from customers and partnerships to communities like The Upside to speaking opportunities/workshops – came from ❤️ having the COURAGE to take very uncomfortable actions and ❤️ making HUMAN CONNECTIONS that turned into relationships over time. Back in 2021, walking into an event where I knew no one made my stomach curdle. But it got easier with practice and with realizing that nearly everyone appreciates someone taking an interest in them 🤗 Now I do it all the time…and around LA, chances are pretty good I know at least one person there 😁 My top 5 highlights from these 5 years: 🌟 Helping individual clients WIN pitch competitions (June Han!) 🌟 Coaching hundreds of founders across many high-stakes pitch events: HumanX in SF, Visa She’s Next and Visa Everywhere Initiative globally (collab w/ KITE Scouting), UChicago’s India Deep Tech Accelerator, the German American Chamber of Commerce’s LA28 mobility event this spring and more. 🌟 Mentoring for Techstars – and becoming a 2x All-Star Mentor and 2026 Give First Award winner! – and several other programs, including FoundersBoost, gener8tor gBeta Inland Empire, Long Beach Accelerator and MassChallenge. → huge bonus: getting to know other mentors! 🌟 Teaching the Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs Pitch Deck Masterclass and the strategy & storytelling class for Oneday’s accredited MBA program. 🌟 Hosting in-person events at #LATechWeek in 2024, 2025 and yes, in 2026 as well! → RSVP for my Funded Founder Lunch on 10/16 with fireside guest Jim Goodman: https://lnkd.in/gSMV8QbV But I’m far from done! Who do you know who needs my help? They could be one of 5 types of growth-stage founders I love to support, no matter their industry / technology / location: 📈 Growing their sales with an in-person event strategy where choosing the right events/showing up prepared is critical for ROI/meeting investor expectations. 💰 Raising a Seed or Series A with a deck or narrative that should be working but just isn’t landing with investors aligned on stage, hypothesis, check size, etc. 📣 Pitching at Startup World Cup, LA Tech Week or any other event where non-dilutive cash, in-kind prizes or partnerships are at stake. 🎤 Speaking at an industry event (keynoting, presenting a case study, moderating a panel) where ideal clients are listening/watching/deciding if they believe in the solution. ✈️ Expanding into the US market from abroad, where understanding how to connect with American investors and customers is key for growth (especially if English isn’t their first language). ➡️ If that sounds like you, please DM me soonest so we can schedule a time to talk. Because I believe (and have since day one of this business) that FOUNDERS DESERVE TO WIN! 🤩

Hot take for designers experimenting with AI + legacy systems: You don’t have to pick one AI tool and hope it integrates perfectly with your design archive. If you can get to the code, you can make it work. I’ve been testing different AI platforms for strategy and prototyping. What I realized: You can use any AI tool you’re comfortable with to think, prototype, and generate UI — as long as it outputs code. Then: 1. Copy the generated code 2. Paste it into Figma Make 3. Let Figma rebuild it using your UI/style library 4. Edit, refine, and share inside your real system That means: • Strategy can live anywhere • Prototyping can move fast • Your design system still governs the final output AI becomes a thinking partner. Figma stays the system of record. For teams sitting on years of legacy designs and wondering how to bridge that with AI experimentation — this is a practical path. #DesignSystems #AIforDesign #Figma #ProductDesign #DesignOps

As a founder, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we talk about AI in design — and how often it creates more anxiety than clarity. This article was a great reminder that AI doesn’t have to be overwhelming or disruptive when used intentionally, it can support the design process by accelerating research, uncovering insights, and giving teams more space to focus on what matters most: people. At genioLAB, LLC, we see AI as a creative partner, not a replacement. The real opportunity in 2026 is using these tools thoughtfully grounded in ethics, data responsibility, and human-centered design. If you’re curious about how AI can enhance UX (without losing the human touch), this is a great read: 👉 https://lnkd.in/grpC3AeQ

Design is evolving fast. We’re no longer just shipping artifacts, rather, we’re shaping intelligent systems that learn, adapt, and co-create with us. This next era asks more of us: more judgment, orchestration, contextual intelligence, and the ability to guide systems that won’t stay static. Our work now is to design conditions for emergence and to keep humanity in the loop. Here’s my take on what’s ahead: https://lnkd.in/gjbey3nZ #designexcellence #designleadership #humancentereddesign #designingwithAI #enterprisedesign

Haven Headache & Migraine… • 5K followers
I joined the Healthcare by Design podcast this week. Link in comments We talked about what it takes to build a healthcare company inside the real system. Not the ideal one. The one that exists today. What we covered: - Designing care while navigating prior authorization. - Building clinical workflows that respect patients and clinicians. - Using AI and real-world data where it helps patients, not dashboards. - The shift from being a healthcare designer to building Haven. This conversation felt personal and was a fantatic interview that Nuzi Barkatally built. I started my career designing inside healthcare. Now I’m designing a company for people living with migraine. If you are building, designing, or operating in healthcare, this one is for you. Link to the episode is in the comments. What parts of the healthcare system feel hardest for you to design around right now?
