My son Corey and I traveled to Auburn, Alabama, to visit my longtime friend and former Spectrum Brands colleague, JD Walker, and his son Greg. JD and I worked closely together years ago when he led sales, and I led marketing. I have always admired his integrity, leadership, and ability to bring out the best in people. Reconnecting years later, this time as fathers watching our sons enjoy game day together, was especially meaningful. The Missouri and Auburn game went into double overtime, with Mizzou pulling out the win, but the real victory was seeing the joy on our sons’ faces (maybe more on Corey’s face than Greg’s). Grateful for enduring friendships, shared memories, and the reminder that some of life’s best moments happen well beyond the office.

Randy Lewis liked thisRandy Lewis liked thisDid you have a choice between pre-tax and Roth 401(k) contributions? If so, you likely chose pre-tax contributions without much thought. If you're a high earner in your 40s or 50s, the logic feels obvious: defer taxes now and pay later when you're retired and in a lower bracket. But... many successful professionals will stay in high tax brackets during retirement because they've done such a good job saving and building wealth. Which means you might just be kicking the can down the road and giving up the chance to build tax-free income. Unlike Roth IRAs, there are no income limits on Roth 401(k) contributions. So if your employer offers it, you have a powerful tax strategy tool that many high earners aren't even considering. But Roth versus pre-tax isn't a one-size-fits-all decision. It's one you want to be making on purpose, not by default. I break down the strategic considerations for high earners in my latest YouTube video and blog post. Link in comments.

Harm Reduction Evidence: Company-backed switching data show heavy smokers using flavored pods experienced greater reductions in cigarette dependence and exhaled carbon monoxide levels. Manufacturing Readiness: If authorized, Glas says it can scale rapidly, with automated U.S. manufacturing capacity capable of supplying 30,000–50,000 stores.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗼 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁. Take John. Recently promoted after an excellent run as an individual contributor, he was asked to lead his first annual budget process. He knew the process inside out, but he had never been the one coordinating it. Determined to deliver something perfect, he took full control. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁? 𝗔 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿. The team felt sidelined. The outcome missed expectations. And John ended up burned out. This happens to so many new leaders. Because the biggest early-career shift is this: 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝗿… 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗿. Why is that transition so hard? Because top performers truly believe: “I can do it faster myself.” “Delegating will slow things down.” “If I don’t control everything, the outcome won’t be good enough.” But this is the trap. 𝗧𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺. When people feel ownership, results get stronger. When responsibilities are shared, the load gets lighter. When the team shines, you shine. Here are three practical tips for new leaders stepping into this shift: 𝟭. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 They may solve problems differently, but their ideas are just as valuable. Give them space to contribute and opportunities to shine. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 Vulnerability builds trust. You don’t need to know everything. You just need to create space for finding the answers together. 𝟯. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 Clarify roles. Hire for complementarity, not similarity. A team of clones doesn’t win. And lastly: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿. Someone who can guide you through the complexity of your first steps as a leader. John may not be real, but his story is. And if you’re stepping into leadership for the first time, remember: You don’t need to do everything — you need to enable everyone. 👉 What advice would you give someone moving from individual contributor to new leader?
