It's 10% or so faster for an image like python:3.11 (1GB), ~20% faster for a larger image like ollama:0.17.5 (YMMV on these times). But where it really shines is partial pulls. Going from ollama:0.17.5->ollama:0.17.6, I get 80-90% faster speeds. For cloud usage, you can take it or leave it. For robotics, this is huge. Working at customer sites over my career, internet speed may be as low as 3G or dailup (eg - a farm out in the middle of nowhere, or a warehouse where IT is a bit...antagonistic). Docker pull just doesn't cut it. Update one dependency and you end up pulling the bytes for three dozen others alongside your built binaries, even if the actual file contents of those builds were the same. 90% faster might be an hour or more. What this results in are simple updates taking an hour or more to pull. This could result in downtime for your robots, onsite tech time wasted babysitting robots to make sure they aren't shut down mid-pull, engineering support time wasted helping the techs, etc. Time/money wasted, your robots/techs/engineers have better things to be doing. I'm looking towards robotics companies as the first users of this, as that's my network - but if you're in a bandwidth constrained environment (IoT?) or do a lot of patch pulls (ML? game servers?), let me know. So...go give clipper a try. It supports docker+containerd+podman. I can set up a private registry if you work with sensitive data or are ITAR controlled. I'd love to be able to give some demos of this.

Romy Ilano reposted thisRomy Ilano reposted thisOne of the first multi-camera immersive concert films shot with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive is now live on Amplium. We filmed Paledusk, who did the opening theme for the anime "GACHIAKUTA," using 3 URSA Cine Immersive cameras. We shot the rehearsal too so we could get angles you can't pull off during the actual show. Front row, right next to the drums, right in front of the vocalist on stage. Like the Metallica concert film on Apple TV, this is a live performance captured with multiple cameras. But multi-cam immersive capture is still extremely rare, and this is one of the first productions to do it with the URSA Cine Immersive. Check it out on Amplium. Let me know what you think!

Romy Ilano reposted thisRomy Ilano reposted thisWe ported Peter's (the OpenClaw guy 🦞) coding setup to VR at last weekend’s Founders, Inc. hackathon. How it works: 1. Single Node.js server runs everything: Next.js frontend, headless Chrome, terminals, and voice pipeline 2. Headless Chrome (Puppeteer) renders the UI (terminal panes + iframe browsers), continuously streamed to the VR headset. 3. The Quest 3 paints those frames onto a curved floating screen in WebXR and converts controller pointing/clicks into desktop coordinates, forwarded back to Chrome. 4. Headset mic audio is streamed to the server, decoded, and transcribed by Deepgram’s streaming Speech-To-Text. 5. An LLM (Gemini Flash) interprets the transcripts and creates tool calls: opening terminals, running commands, browsing URLs, and prompting Claude Code sessions 6. Now, after years of waiting, the third and final patent from my Staff Engineer chapter has been granted. 🙏 This one covers a pub/sub system my team built that became the backbone for asynchronous inter-service communication at the application layer, powering 740 million messages a day as of April 2024. What makes this meaningful to me is not just the scale, but the journey behind it. We were not simply building a technical system. We were replacing a patchwork of bespoke async delivery mechanisms that had grown independently across teams. The challenge was not only in designing and delivering the platform, but also in getting it adopted, integrating customer feedback, and evolving the system as new needs emerged. Working on foundational systems like this reinforced something I have learned repeatedly in my career: Greenfield work gives you a rare sense of possibility and accomplishment. But when that same system becomes brownfield, it gives you something even more valuable: feedback on the quality of your design decisions, technical judgment, and long-term thinking. I am deeply grateful to my incredible co-inventors—Alex Kleissner, Bartek Ogryczak, David Lyons, Keerthi Nallani, Matt Taylor, Pengyue Li, Peter Baker, Renjie Xu—and to Chime for creating the space to build something of lasting leverage. … This will very likely be the last patent from the technical chapter of my career, and that feels remarkably peaceful. I know engineers who hold dozens of patents. For a long time, it was easy to measure myself against numbers, prestige, and other external markers of success. But this moment feels less about accumulation and more about sufficiency. There is a special kind of freedom in reaching a point where gratitude matters more than comparison. The platform was valued $3.5B some years ago, and it still features millions of users. But it had big monetization issues, and the recent complicated landscape for VR and gaming in general did the rest. Snap has acquired some assets from the company and hired some people from the team. They will work in the Specs subsidiary, the one producing AR glasses. Jay G Oh man, the AI stuff is just wild. I've build more in a week than I have in years, and the stuff the kids are doing now is wild. I hope we can have a Bell Labs reunion in person some day!
