Roger Blumenthal reposted thisRoger Blumenthal reposted thisI am honored to be awarded the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sports Cardiology Society. I am fortunate to have been able to combine my personal interests in exercise and sports performance with a career in clinical cardiology. There will be a short award presentation during the inaugural Sports Cardiology Summit in Boston on September 25-26. This summit serves as the first Harvard – affiliated continuing education course in sports cardiology. This course will provide practical, case-based insights for clinicians who deliver medical care to athletes and active individuals across every level of performance. Registration is still open. The course offers a remote option. Roger Blumenthal reposted thisRoger Blumenthal reposted thisSameer was born and raised in Baltimore. He was a diehard Ravens fan — his heart, and his blood, were purple. And yet, the New York Football Giants would become an unexpected part of his story. On January 4, 2026, during their final game of the season against the Cowboys, the Giants honored Sameer publicly. Every player took the field with Sameer's initials, SD, on their helmet. The Giants also shared the tribute below, recognizing Sameer’s exemplary care and extending their condolences to our family and friends. Sameer served as a team physician for the Giants. He never wore the uniform, but the people inside that building knew him. Last night, the Giants beat the Cowboys again, and it brought the whole thing back. The Giants are now led by Coach John Harbaugh, who spent 18 years in Baltimore before coming to New York. Somehow, the purple found its way into this moment too. I’m sharing this tribute because this, too, is part of Sameer’s story.

Roger Blumenthal reposted thisRoger Blumenthal reposted thisNine years ago, a phase one clinical trial saved my life. The treatment that got me into remission wasn’t standard of care yet. It was research. My wife still reminds me I wouldn’t be here without it. That experience shaped how I think about academic medicine. We often talk about research and care as separate things. Academic medicine has the opportunity to bring those together. If access is the most important quality measure we have, access to research belongs in that same conversation. Clinical trials and new treatments should be built more directly into how we care for patients. That’s the bar I want Duke Health held to. Clinical research should be embedded as a standard of care. I’m here because someone built that path for me. We owe our patients the same opportunity.

Roger Blumenthal shared thisGreat article on the Lou & Nancy Grasmick Professor of Cardiology and her fabulous legacy of mentorship!Roger Blumenthal shared thisWendy Post has been helping to lead the next generation of PhD and physician-scientists in cardiology research for years. “We want trainees to be infected with the research bug, and we want to see them grow as people and scientists, and some as physicians. Mentorship is incredibly gratifying because we get to observe that process unfolding with new generations of scientists, and we know how much society will benefit from their discoveries." Roger Blumenthal reposted thisRoger Blumenthal reposted thisEugene Braunwald: An Appreciation Eugene Braunwald died on April 22, 2026. To write about him in the space of a short tribute is impossible; to not write is unthinkable. I first met him when I was a cardiology fellow, and I approached with a fair amount of trepidation — his reputation was enormous. What struck me, once the awe had settled enough to actually observe, was his capacity. He was running the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital and at Brigham and Women's Hospital simultaneously — two extraordinary institutions with complex, distinct systems, faculties, and identities. He took resident reports at both nearly daily, walking across Longwood Avenue twice a day for the better part of a decade; in his own telling, he wore out a lot of shoes. Both institutions were happy to have him, and no one questioned his ability to carry those responsibilities on top of his textbook, on top of his research, on top of TIMI, on top of the intellectual guidance he gave the field, on top of his talks around the world. He was somehow everywhere, and yet no one felt neglected. Everyone felt grateful for the attention. I remember his assistant queuing calls, one after another. He would talk with you, land the point with clarity, and move on to the next person. And when it was your turn, he focused on you completely. You came away grateful. His life reads like a screenplay, and Tom Lee's biography captured it beautifully. It is rare to see anyone guide a field from its infancy through to its full maturity and remain relevant into their 90s. It is harder still to imagine how he did it. His network of connections around the world is unprecedented and probably never to be fully replicated. Cardiology, as a field, is what it is in large part because of him. He pivoted several times in his career — from cardiac mechanics, to myocardial oxygen consumption, to infarct size limitation, to the TIMI trials. A full accounting of his contributions is nearly impossible; it is as if he touched every major area of cardiology. Each pivot he led with vision and energy. His mind never lost its edge. Anyone who presented to him felt a small bit of nervousness, because you wanted to bring your best. He did not demand respect; he accumulated it. He was the OG. So many who never met him knew him through his papers and through the textbook that generations of us studied assiduously as we tried to become worthy as cardiologists. That is how I first encountered him, too. The last thing I want to say is about what he showed us at the end. He kept going because he loved it — the interactions, the intellectual challenges, the opportunities. And even toward the end, you had the sense that he was the best in the room. You always wanted to hear what he had to say. I remember a recent lecture of his on the future of cardiology, still looking ahead. He did what he loved, and he did it his entire life, and we are all the better for it. He will be missed dearly.

2wRoger Blumenthal liked thisBeyond its compelling storylines, the emergency room drama The Pitt offers a revealing look at the many challenges shaping health care today. Burnout, workforce shortages, patient access barriers, workplace violence, and the promise and pitfalls of new technologies are not unique to emergency medicine. They are increasingly familiar realities for cardiovascular professionals navigating a rapidly evolving health care environment. HBO Max's Emmy-winning drama The Pitt unfolds a single emergency shift in real time, turning cardiac arrests and resuscitations into vivid case studies of coordinated care. Created by R. Scott Gemmill with ER alumni John Wells and star Noah Wyle, it premiered January 2025 and won five Emmys in its first year. Filmed on a Warner Bros. Burbank, CA soundstage with exteriors at Pittsburgh's Allegheny General Hospital, it stars Wyle as Dr. "Robby" Robinavitch and Katherine LaNasa as head nurse Dana Evans—an ensemble whose closed-loop communication embodies the teamwork that saves cardiovascular lives. The Pitt dramatizes on screen that the best cardiovascular outcomes come from teams, not solo heroes. Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors will be honoring HBO Max’s The Pitt and Executive Producers John Wells, Noah Wyle and R. Scott Gemmill on Sunday , October 11, 2026 on the Warner Bros. Studios Lot. Roger Blumenthal liked thisThe concept of "cardiovascular strain amplifiers" is one of the novel contributions of this document. While competitive athletic activity can place high demands for VO2 and blood pressure, only tactical athletes have to perform while facing imminent risk of personal harm, etc. The exact toll that these amplifiers take on the tactical athlete are unstudied and therefore unknown. Kudos to Geoff Cole, Fran O'Connor, and the other members of this task force for bringing this concept forward. Many thanks to the ACC for being an incredible partner in these efforts. Roger Blumenthal liked thisRoger Blumenthal liked thisThis World Alzheimer’s Day, I want to talk about something most people don’t associate with heart health: the brain. For a long time, Alzheimer’s was treated as something that simply showed up later in life, with little warning. We now understand it differently; it’s a disease process that can begin decades before any cognitive symptoms appear. That single shift changes everything about how we should think about prevention. I’ve spent my career focused on cardiovascular risk, and I’ve long believed the heart and brain are far more connected than we've historically recognized. The same biology that drives cardiovascular disease may also play a role in cognitive decline. If that holds true, the work we do to protect the heart could end up protecting the brain as well. As clinicians, we’re still in the early stages of understanding how strong this connection is, but it’s one of the most important questions in medicine today, and one that I’m proud @NewAmsterdam is helping to answer.
