Roger Hurwitz shared thisThank you Tanya Dua - it was funRoger Hurwitz shared this🚨Welcome back to VC Wednesdays. This week, we have Volition Capital’s Roger Hurwitz, who backs SaaS companies. Read on for more. 🚨 ✒️ How has your background made you a more discerning investor? Accounting gives you the full perspective on financial statements and all its elements – it's like one big puzzle. But I was always frustrated by looking backward at previous data to understand what happened at a specific point in time. I wanted to get involved in what's going forward, not backward. That’s how I stumbled into investing. ✒️You’ve said that you ‘see value in opportunities others may not immediately see.’ How? You don't always see growth in financial statements. You can have a flat business, but then when you peel the onion, it could be a perpetual model moving to a SaaS model. It could be that the company does $10 million in revenue each year, but perpetual licenses are going down from eight to four and SaaS is going up from four to eight. I don't want to diminish absolute growth, but it doesn't tell you the whole story. ✒️What’s an example of that? Securonix initially started as a perpetual license model. When we got involved, it was pivoting, and it was very early days in the on-prem subscription model. If you just looked at the absolute numbers, you'd say revenues are flat and profitability is declining. But if you peeled back the layers, they had migrated a bunch of customers from a perpetual to subscription-based model. ✒️What do you look for in a founder? The difference between a great investment and a so-so investment is a lot of decisions along the way, and making trade-offs to be ahead of the curve. I'm very much focused on founders with whom I have alignment, chemistry and true partnership, because you have to pivot. Another thing is, can that founder or core team serve as a nucleus to attract and build a team? ✒️More venture capital is going to bridge rounds versus primary rounds this year. How are you approaching investing? It’s all relative. If you look at valuations over a five-year period, they're healthy; but over a two-year period, they're down significantly. If you made an investment in 2021, you've overpaid relative to today – so the question is, has the company grown into it? Founders need to control their own destiny, but the only way you can do that is if you've built your business to not be dependent on others. Down rounds and bridge rounds happen when they haven’t been able to do that. ✒️What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received, and from whom? Someone I really value is Alan Patricof, who gave me advice that has resonated with me for a long time. “There's five things in every investment and they all count equally: management, management, management, product and market.” If I have an A+ team in a B+ market with a B+ product, I'm in. If I get an A+ market and an A+ product with a C+ team, I have no interest. #VCWednesdays #vc #venturecapital #startups #TechonLinkedIn

Roger Hurwitz liked thisHuge milestone for Saviynt! 🚀 Hot on the heels of crossing $300m in ARR and launching Zuma (our platform AI and NHI Identity Security), we officially opened a new office in the Bay Area last week! It was unbelievable to have 90 of the brightest minds in one room across Product Management, Engineering, AI Data Science, GTM, and Operations. At Saviynt, we are being very deliberate about building a talent-dense culture—a place where we can attract the best and give them the room to do their best work. We have now built the industry's leading Identity Security platform for AI and NHI, tied with human context: • Zuma Insights: Discovering every AI and NHI, creating a complete access graph, running scans, and flagging alerts. • Zuma Enforce: The industry's most advanced runtime access authorization gateway/plugin, which checks for identity governance policies, intent, and behavior anomalies. • Zuma Lifecycle: Ownership management, JIT access grant, access certifications, and SoDs across Humans, Agents, and NHIs. Super exciting times ahead!Roger Hurwitz liked thisWe've opened the doors to our newest office, this time in the Bay Area! 🤝 Our new office brings together top Engineering and Product talent to build the future of identity security under one roof. Roger Hurwitz liked thisRoger Hurwitz liked thisYou can have the best AI triage and investigation engine in the world. But if the detection signal is weak, or missing entirely, there is only so much AI can do. The challenge with detections isn't how many you have. It's whether they're effective. I think that comes down to four things. Coverage — are we detecting the threats and techniques that matter? The one we all already measure. Silence — which detections never fire, and is that because nothing happened, or because they can't? Noise — which detections fire constantly and produce little security value? Decay — are detections keeping up as threats, data, infrastructure, and our own environment change? A detection rule can map perfectly to MITRE ATT&CK and still be querying a field that stopped being populated in March. It exists. It's mapped. It counts toward your coverage number. But it can't fire. Silence is the one I find most interesting, because it's the only one that doesn't announce itself. A noisy rule creates pain every day, so it gets attention. A broken silent rule sits unnoticed for months, until the day you actually need it. The opposite is just as problematic. A detection can fire thousands of times and generate little security value. It works technically, but creates more noise than signal. This is why I think there's an opportunity to expand how we think about AI in the SOC. We tend to think about AI after an alert is generated. Triage it, investigate it, determine whether it's a threat, decide what to do. But there's an equally important opportunity before the alert: continuously improving the detection layer itself. Assess coverage. Identify gaps. Test whether existing detections actually work. Tune what's noisy. Validate what's silent. Evaluate new threat intelligence against the detection estate. Create new content where needed. Measure the results. Then do it again. Assess → Test → Optimize → Deploy → Measure → Repeat This is what I've started thinking about as detection health. And by test, I mean prove it. Run the detection against real historical telemetry. Check the data and the fields it depends on. Simulate the attack where appropriate. Fix the logic and run it again. AI makes this possible at a scale that wasn't practical before. It's one thing to periodically review a few dozen rules. It's another to continuously assess and improve thousands of detections against a changing environment and threat landscape. Maybe the next measure of detection maturity isn't how many rules you have, or even your theoretical MITRE ATT&CK coverage. Maybe it's how much of your detection estate is effective, efficient, and continuously improving. Because even the best AI investigation needs the right signal to investigate. And a detection isn't valuable because it exists. It's valuable because you can prove it works.

Roger Hurwitz liked thisRoger Hurwitz liked thisHere's the thing about AI leadership content right now - there's a lot of it, and very little comes from someone who's actually accountable when an AI initiative goes sideways. I wanted to be around people who are. When I built out the AI governance framework at Apptega, the hard part was never writing the controls. It was getting CISOs and practitioners to tell me honestly how governance was actually being implemented inside their orgs - not how it looked in the boardroom deck. Those conversations taught me more about where AI governance breaks in practice than any framework assessment could. That's the gap the AI Exec Board is built to close. It's a limited and vetted, off-the-record group of senior executives who actually own AI outcomes - not vendors pitching a platform, not spectators with a take. Just operators comparing notes on what's working. Looking forward to bringing what I've learned in AI governance and cybersecurity into this room. Thanks to Phillip Petrella Jr. for the nomination, and AI Exec Board for putting this awesome group together.

The solution provides visibility, runtime protection, and governance for AI agents and non-human identities, addressing the security challenges of rapid corporate AI adoption. Saviynt’s financial achievements reflect the growing demand for modern identity security, especially with the challenges caused by the rapid utilization of AI. Saviynt developed Zuma after working closely with some of the world’s leading organizations and understanding that AI agents, LLMs, AI-based applications, and non-human identities are multiplying across business functions, yet often without effective oversight. With the launch of Zuma, enterprises can now implement a complete, real-time, intent aware identity security solution purpose built for AI. “AI is fundamentally changing the identity security equation,” said Sachin K Nayyar, CEO of Saviynt. “Enterprises are no longer securing only human users. They are now responsible for AI agents and non-human identities that can decide and access systems at machine speed. Saviynt’s momentum reflects the urgency we are seeing from customers around the world, and Zuma represents a major step forward in helping them embrace AI with confidence and control.” #Saviynt #ZumaAI #AIIdentitySecurity #Cybersecurity #AgenticAI #IdentitySecurity #NonHumanIdentities #AIGovernance
