Ryan Hansen liked thisRyan Hansen liked thisIn September 2018 a power trader named Einar Aas missed a margin call at Nasdaq Clearing, and his book was auctioned off 114 million euros short of his collateral. Nasdaq put in 7 million of its own capital. The other 107 million came out of a default fund the surviving members had paid into ahead of time. A crypto exchange has nothing like that fund. When a liquidation leaves a hole its insurance fund won't cover, the venue closes the most profitable positions on the other side at the bankruptcy price. It's called auto-deleveraging, and it means the trader who read the move correctly pays for the one who read it wrong. I don't think a serious options desk carries size on those terms. It needs a party that has agreed in advance to absorb a default, and no crypto venue has one. A regulator can't create one either, because somebody has to put money in first.
