This week, the common thread across multiple statement reviews was not high processing rates. It was misaligned systems. Main update Fees living outside interchange that rarely get questioned POS platforms that look efficient but erode margin over time Pricing models that no longer reflect how customers actually pay One important reminder Your processor’s system is designed to be profitable by default. That does not automatically mean it’s optimized for your business. Merchant services today is less about persuasion and more about math. Algorithms, risk models, and prior account data drive how your account is treated far more than personal relationships. What disciplined operators are doing differently They review the entire payment stack, not just the rate line They align POS, pricing model, and payment behavior They treat merchant services as a recurring operating expense that deserves routine review Regional insight Arizona businesses tend to see these issues earlier due to rapid growth and seasonal volume swings.
