Scott Gingerich shared thisOne final ask. Ten years ago, three chefs invited me to participate in something called Chefs Cycle. I had never ridden a road bike, had no idea what I was getting into, and certainly didn't envision that a decade later I would be completing my eighth ride. Last week, 148 riders came together in Bend, Oregon for Chefs Cycle 2026 in support of No Kid Hungry. Together, those riders, and more importantly the thousands of friends, family members, colleagues, sponsors, and supporters behind them, have raised $1,274,946 through 3,657 individual donations (and counting). That number is incredible. But what inspires me most isn't the dollar amount. It's what it represents: thousands of people deciding that no child should have to wonder where their next meal is coming from. As someone who has spent my entire adult life in hospitality, I've always believed that food is about far more than sustenance. Food creates connection, community, dignity, and opportunity. Every child deserves access to that foundation. While the riding is over, fundraising remains open through tomorrow, June 18. I'm making one final ask of my network. Tomorrow morning’s training ride will take place in a very special place alongside some special people, fellow Chefs Cycle riders, former colleagues, and longtime friends connected through both hospitality and a shared commitment to the mission of No Kid Hungry. Natalie and I are currently in Grand Cayman celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary, and since Cayman has become such a meaningful place for our family over the years, milestone birthdays, holidays, and now this anniversary trip, it felt fitting to bring the bike along and get some training miles in while we’re here. One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Chefs Cycle is the way it brings people together from across the hospitality industry around something larger than ourselves. Hospitality, at its core, is about caring for people, and supporting the fight against childhood hunger feels like a natural extension of that purpose. Scott Gingerich shared thisIn an industry built on feeding people, millions of children in America still don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Each year, I step a little outside of my professional lane and into something that, in many ways, sits at the very core of it. This June, I’ll be riding 200 miles over two days in Bend, Oregon as part of Chefs Cycle in support of No Kid Hungry, an initiative that brings together leaders across the culinary and hospitality industry to help end childhood hunger in America. For those unfamiliar, Chefs Cycle is more than an endurance ride, it’s a fundraising movement powered by a simple but urgent belief: No child should have to wonder where their next meal is coming from. This will be my eighth year participating, and my first riding with Team Breaking Away, a new chapter alongside a group of other former Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants leaders, great friends and industry peers. Having spent my career in hospitality, I’ve always believed that what we do goes far beyond serving food. At its best, our industry is about care, community, and connection. Food is foundational, not just for nourishment, but for dignity, development, and opportunity. And yet, millions of children across the U.S. still face food insecurity. One of the reasons I continue to support this cause is the tangible impact: every $1 donated can help provide up to 10 meals for children in need. Scott Gingerich reposted thisScott Gingerich reposted thisDuring my tenure at Chick-fil-A, we conducted research on teams, specifically on what made the best teams the best for nearly two decades. Most leaders know culture matters. But very few actually take the time to work on it. One of the questions we asked the most was this: What's the most powerful tool you have to drive performance? 67% of leaders said culture. And here's the thing: No other tool was ranked higher. Then we asked leaders to rank their priorities. Building and maintaining culture ranked 12th. Think about that for a second. Leaders are telling us culture is their #1 tool — and then not working on it. Why is that the case? We found that it came down to one of three things, and sometimes it was all three, depending on the company. First, they're stuck in quicksand. Busyness, distraction, and complexity consume them. When you're in survival mode, you're not building culture. You're just trying to get through the week. Second, culture feels soft. It's invisible. You can't put it on a spreadsheet. But just because it's invisible doesn't mean unimportant. Culture impacts every decision your organization makes — whether you're shaping it or not. Third, leaders simply don't know what to do. That last one is the most fixable. Culture is the cumulative effect of what people see, hear, experience, and believe. That's it. Which means as a leader, you are already shaping your culture every single day — through every conversation, every decision, every behavior you model or ignore. The question isn't whether you have a culture. The question is whether it's the one you actually want.

One thing I truly love is my role at IHG Hotels & Resorts I get to work on complex projects, collaborate with smart people across the globe, and help build technology driven solutions that actually move the needle. That environment pushed me to start thinking differently. That thinking led me to build a startup on the side focused on hospitality as a whole. Most days start around 5:30 or 6:00 AM in the office, followed by a full day at IHG, then evenings packed with conversations with my co founder and people who are just as curious and ambitious. Some nights wrap up around midnight or later. It is a lot. It is also a lot of fun. The biggest surprise is how much the startup world has made me better at my day job. It forces you to zoom out, question assumptions, move faster, and think like an owner. At the same time, everything I have learned at IHG about scale, structure, and real world execution has directly shaped how we are building Frenzai. This project has been a true labor of love, built by so many hands. From the contractors, architects, designers, electricians, painters, engineers, vendors, and our owners who brought the vision to life - to the local officials and partners who supported us along the way, this opening belongs to all of you. And most importantly, to my team. The staff and trainers who have been pouring their hearts into every detail, welcoming our first guests with pride, and showing up with care, grit, and excitement. You are the soul of this place. Watching you bring Mirador to life was the greatest reward. Kimpton Mirador was created to be a neighborhood hotel, a gathering place, and a reflection of the community it sits within. Yesterday felt like the first chapter of something really special. Scott Gingerich posted thisBig news to share. As 2025 came to a close, so did my 12-year chapter with Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants/IHG Hotels & Resorts. That journey included 1 year as a Kimpton consultant, 9 years leading Kimpton Restaurants & Bars (R&B), & just shy of 3 years overseeing R&B across all IHG’s Luxury & Lifestyle brands. Those 9 years were especially inspiring—& deeply soul-filling—because of the passionate, committed, & extraordinarily talented R&B team I had the privilege of working alongside every day. Having the honor of taking the reins from leaders I admire immensely—Alex Taylor, the late James Lin, John Inserra, Carol Daniel, Kelley Jones, & the incomparable Niki Leondakis—I poured my heart into carrying forward Bill Kimpton’s legacy: that great R&B should never feel like “hotel restaurants,” but stand on their own as beloved neighborhood places & powerful commercial engines driving relevance, rate, & loyalty. That mission became more than a job. It became a way of life. Bill Kimpton saw in the early ’80s that the hospitality industry wasn’t always all that hospitable. 45 years later, while hospitality has become a buzzword (& voices like Will Guidara are doing game changing work advancing the conversation), moments of true hospitality are still too rare. As leaders—& as people—we can do better. Creating a culture of hospitality isn’t something we talk about; it’s something we do. Each. &. Every. Day. Lead with heart. Welcome individuality. Show genuine care. Encourage connection. Empower people to be themselves, dream big, & innovate. When we do that—for guests & employees—everyone wins. I’m writing this back home in Tampa after a long-overdue family holiday through the UK, France, Germany and Italy. Natalie & I had dreamed of the trip for years & finally accepted there would never be a perfect time. It was nothing short of magical. Those weeks allowed me to reset, recharge, & reconnect with my family in a way I never had before. I returned with a full bucket, a nourished soul, & renewed clarity as I consider what comes next. And honestly? I don’t know yet. Maybe I’ll learn guitar & chase the rock-star dream of my younger self. Maybe Natalie & I will attempt to become Tampa’s Chip & Joanna Gaines. Maybe I’ll explore how 35 years in hospitality might translate to baseball—another lifelong passion. The majors are off the table, but starting from the bottom isn’t. Perhaps the Tampa Bay Rays need a batboy… or maybe the Savannah Bananas need another believer in “Fans First.” Jesse Cole, like Bill Kimpton before him, believes experiences improve when we focus on people—not systems or KPIs, but humans. That philosophy resonates deeply with me. Whatever my next chapter holds, 1 thing is certain: it will be somewhere that the guest & employee experience guide decisions. Scott Gingerich liked thisScott Gingerich liked thisWe killed a piece of technology last year that was working. QR ordering. Efficient, helped the bottom line, and some guests genuinely liked it. Pulling it cost us 100 to 150 basis points and a lot of retraining. We did it anyway. Every year we were losing guests who hated it and never came back, and the ones who liked it weren't enough to cover the bleed. We built it for the right reason at the right time, we kept it too long after. For context on whos saying this: were building our own internal AI data warehouse right now and running video AI on our cameras. I've sat through more vendor demos this year than I want to admit out loud. I'm not the guy who wants to go back to paper tickets. I believe there are two kinds of restaurant technology, and the industry keeps talking about them like they're the same thing. The first takes work off your team. Invoices, inventory, scheduling, reporting, all the stuff that drags a manager into the office at seven on a Friday night when they should be on the floor. Automate every bit of it and go as hard as you can. The second takes the thinking off your team. Forecasting, guest insight, what to promote, where next week's business is coming from. That one isn't removing labor, it's removing judgment. The pitch sounds identical, which is why so many operators buy the second thing while telling themselves they bought the first. New episode of The Return is out. The question in it I'd put to any operator: what did your team stop doing when you bought that tool, and what do they do with that time now? Scott Gingerich liked thisScott Gingerich liked thisSomething significant happened in hospitality this week. Sloan Dean, former CEO of Remington Hospitality, launched AI Hospitality Group. An operating company that combines autonomous AI agents handling back-office functions with a fully human guest-facing team. No hybrid. A clear line. Machine runs the back of house. People own the floor. His opening argument is hard to dismiss. Hotel owners don't have a tools problem. They have an operating model problem. The tools multiplied. The margins did not follow. He is right about the problem. The question worth asking is whether this is the right solution, or the beginning of one. Here is what I believe. AI belongs in hospitality. Not as a replacement for human connection but as the infrastructure that makes more of it possible. Every minute a manager spends reconciling a labor report is a minute not spent on the floor. Every dollar lost to inefficient scheduling is a dollar that could fund a better team. If AI can handle the operational mechanics with more precision and less cost than a human can, that is not a threat to hospitality. It is a gift to it. The risk is not the technology. The risk is what happens to the culture, the concept, and the guest experience when the operating model changes faster than the people inside it can adapt. Great hospitality has never been a back-office problem. It has always been a people problem. And people need leadership, context, and someone who has walked the floor and knows what the room feels like at 8pm on a Friday. AI can optimize the machine. It cannot build the soul of a place. Used correctly, that is exactly the point. Let it do what it does best. Free the people to do what only they can. Because he thought he had no way to go. Timothy Harrison didn’t have a ride to the ceremony. He hadn’t collected his cap and gown. He didn’t have an outfit. And he didn’t have tickets for his family. So he went to work instead. When his manager and coworkers found out, they refused to let that happen. One drove him to pick up his graduation gear. Others pooled money to buy him dress pants, a shirt, tie and shoes. Then they made sure he got to the ceremony on time. Timothy walked across the stage that day. And after his story spread, a local community college offered him a full scholarship, including books. He thought he was going to spend graduation day at work. His coworkers made sure he had a day he would never forget. ❤️

Scott Gingerich liked thisScott Gingerich liked thisI think most restaurant training is solving the wrong problem. We spend the majority of onboarding on execution. Steps of service, product knowledge, POS, timing, recovery scripts. All necessary. None of it is the thing that determines whether a guest feels anything. The argument against me is obvious: you can't have hospitality without competence. A server who cares deeply but drops plates isn't delivering an experience. Fair. But I'd argue we've overcorrected so far toward competence that we've stopped training for the thing that actually differentiates a brand. Nobody's onboarding module answers the question: why does the person sitting at your table tonight deserve your attention? We assume people arrive knowing that. Some do. Most need to be told, repeatedly, that it's the actual job. Here's the test. Ask three people on your floor what the point of their role is. If they describe tasks, you've trained execution. If they describe guests, you've trained hospitality. Tell me if you've seen it differently.

Scott Gingerich liked thisScott Gingerich liked thisThe cost of a revolving door in hospitality is well documented. Lodging Magazine laid it out recently. Approximately $6,000 to replace a frontline worker. Close to $10,000 to replace a manager. Lost productivity accounting for up to 70% of that total. Before you count a single soft review, a walked guest, or a burned-out supervisor covering a shift that was never theirs. The industry talks constantly about designing spaces for the guest. It rarely talks about designing spaces for the people who work in them. Back of house tells that story every day. Badly designed back bars. Poorly positioned stations. Kitchens designed by project teams who have never worked a service. Spaces that make an already demanding job harder than it needs to be. And then ownership wonders why people leave. Too few development conversations include the people who will actually work in the space. Retention starts long before the first shift. It starts in how the space is designed. A kitchen that flows well, a break room that feels like it was meant for human beings, a back of house that signals to the team that someone thought about them before they arrived. These are not luxury considerations. They are retention tools. The guest experience is delivered by people. Big news out of CAVA Despite strong performance and a concept that’s been winning in fast casual, CAVA’s COO was just terminated without cause. That kind of headline makes every operator sit up and think. Success does not guarantee stability. Even when traffic is strong and the brand is growing, leadership alignment at the top is constantly being evaluated.
