The Art of Leadership CA Community Colleges and CTE Programs The California Community College system has a poor track record regarding transfer students. Historically the transfer rate to four-year institutions has been around 15 percent for the system. In contrast, the CTE programs have experienced significant success providing marketable skill sets and addressing local labor market needs. It isn’t fantasy to envision the system shifting its focus to CTE versus transfer and the many additional priorities now addressed ineffectively. Consolidate the system, focus on CTE programming and strengthen the partnerships with business, the military, and industry. California needs effective and relevant training at the community college level.

At UC Irvine, we have implemented integrative health practices across all of Health Affairs. We now have the largest integrative health program in the country, with 113,000 inpatient and outpatient visits per year. The entire medical community is accepting what we have known for years: that evidence-based approaches such as acupuncture, yoga, exercise, massage and nutrition counseling consistently help people with cancer manage the harsh side effects of treatment. We have quantified this level of acceptance with new research published in the journal BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies. Led by Alexandre Chan, PharmD, MPH, FCCP, FISOPP, BCPS, BCOP, APh, the study surveyed more than 300 oncology professionals from The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the Society for Integrative Oncology. About 70 percent said they had used or recommended at least one integrative approach to help patients manage cancer-related symptoms such as pain, fatigue, anxiety and gastrointestinal distress. And yet another large majority — almost 80 percent! — of those same oncologists said these services are underutilized in cancer care. A multitude of obstacles are at work, including a lack of insurance coverage and limited training opportunities. If you want to know how older Americans are using digital resources today, take a look at the “2025 Active Aging Report” from GetSetUp. Impressively, the report incorporates data and insights from over 4 MILLION course participations in by learners taking GetSetUp’s online classes in everything from digital literacy and technology to physical, mental, and financial wellbeing-- classes that include upskilling to land a new job, learning to use AI, and exploring entrepreneurship. Among the key findings, GetSetUp learners reported using a broad range digital applications as part of their daily routines. These included: ·      82% use online banking or digital financial apps ·      35% use smart security systems like the Ring ·      31% use ride-share services ·      35% use grocery or food delivery services Sounds like how YOU use digital apps, right? My conclusion >> older Americans have a lot in common with younger generations in their adoption of digital apps to make their lives more convenient. I’m especially interested in workforce and entrepreneurship attitudes and opportunities across the generations. The Active Aging Report’s data about what older learners want most when it comes to employment and business success really highlights shared intergenerational interests. When looking for job training or upskilling, older learners are interested in: ·      78% Technology and digital skills ·      33% Software tools and collaboration tools ·      27% Soft skills development ·      17% Leadership ·      15% Industry-specific certifications When searching for jobs, older adults report that they search online job boards and websites (66%), take part in networking events, ask  for referrals (37%), visit social media platforms (21%), and use employment agencies or headhunters (13%). Despite lots of media coverage about generational conflicts, when it comes to using digital tools and looking for employment, it turns out that we all have a lot in common. Thanks to the work of GetSetUp, millions of older Americans have access to the digital literacy courses and tech upskilling resources they need.  To learn more, download the report! 57% of all California community college course offerings were fully online in 2023. I find that a bit staggering. I wouldn't have found out without a conversation with Michelle Pacansky-Brock. We dug into this report from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's office that made to the California state legislature: Results From a Comprehensive California Community Colleges Online Education Study https://lnkd.in/gYx2a5hE Is online the direction many students want and need to go, especially the more economically disadvantaged and nontraditional students who are more common in community colleges? We'll need to think hard about how to do assessment in online classes so that these course credits and degrees are still widely perceived as meaningful. The growing accessibility and capability of AI agents makes this harder.

Psychological and Behavioral Factors Influencing Respondents and Their Impact on Test Validity The responses of examinees during test performance are among the most crucial elements influencing the validity of psychological and educational measurement. The testing situation itself can provoke psychological pressure and emotional disturbance, especially among children or individuals who experience high anxiety, impairing their ability to respond naturally to questions. Some examinees feel fear or stress when facing test items, which disrupts their cognitive process and diminishes their overall performance—particularly in maximum performance tests like achievement and intelligence assessments. Emotional disturbance is another major factor that affects response accuracy. It may lead to irrational or incorrect answers that do not reflect the examinee’s true level. Similarly, motivation plays a pivotal role in shaping responses. High or low motivation can result in performance variance—motivated individuals tend to exert greater effort, while others may approach the test carelessly or indifferently, weakening the test’s construct validity. Cronbach points out that "response set" represents one of the behavioral biases that must be considered. When examinees show a consistent tendency toward a certain type of answer (e.g., always selecting “True” or “False”), test results become susceptible to distortion. In tests that rely on binary choices like “True” or “False,” some individuals may randomly choose “True” when they don’t know the correct answer, while others may prefer “False.” If the number of “True” items exceeds the “False” ones, this creates an unfair advantage for the first group, resulting in biased outcomes. To ensure test validity, the items must be balanced—half of them should be factually true and the other half false. Moreover, the test should be designed in a way that minimizes response bias, with clear instructions, a comfortable environment, and strategies to manage emotional states and motivation. Through such thoughtful design, examinees’ responses are more likely to reflect reality, providing researchers with more accurate and fair results.

Presented my first poster in my doctoral program on "Utilizing Transformative Learning and Adult Development Theory to Help Leaders Navigate VUCA and BANI". I was curious about what leadership competencies leaders need to navigate the VUCA and BANI environments. My favorite takeaway from the poster is: "VUCA helps you navigate the terrain, and BANI asked whether you are psychologically and developmentally equipped to walk through it."
