Timothy Wolfe shared thisTwo days later, I'm still reflecting on Colorado's 150th birthday celebration. One of the most meaningful moments happened before most of us were even awake. Volunteer teams, led by Colorado's Outdoor Recreation team and partners, began hiking Colorado's 14ers in the early morning hours, with an Indigenous sunrise blessing on the summit of Mt. Blue Sky helping open a day of celebration across our state. It was a powerful reminder that Colorado's story is rooted in both our extraordinary landscapes and the people who have called them home for generations. (Article link below) The rest of the day was filled with unforgettable moments—from pancakes and a John Denver sing-along featuring Isaac Slade and an incredible lineup of Colorado musicians at History Colorado, to birthday cake at Union Station, celebrating with partners and sponsors at McGregor Square, and ending the evening with an incredible drone show after the Rockies game. Timothy Wolfe liked thisTimothy Wolfe liked thisYesterday, the Biennial of the Americas facilitated the first meeting of the Colorado International Caucus, a bipartisan forum lead by Representative Matthew Soper to strengthen Colorado's engagement with international trade, diplomacy, cultural exchange, and global collaboration. The Caucus brings together legislators from across Colorado to engage in meaningful dialogue around the opportunities and challenges shaping our state's global future. Through ongoing convenings, members and leaders across business, government, academia, and the nonprofit sector will be working together to build legislation and relationships that strengthen Colorado's international engagement. Today's meeting marks the beginning of this important work, with additional convenings planned for September and November. Thank you to the legislators and partners who joined us for this first conversation. Job openings in the restaurant and lodging sector rose from a revised 724,000 in November to 809,000 in December, continuing a pattern of sign month-to-month volatility. In 2025, monthly openings averaged 890,000, essentially unchanged from the average of 889,000 seen in 2024. Despite the wide swings in the monthly data, there has been a surprising degree of resilience in labor demand for restaurants and lodging despite broader economic uncertainties and signs of a softening labor market overall. Indeed, foodservices and accommodations job openings averaged 835,000 per month in the 2017 to 2019 time period, putting the current level not far from pre-pandemic levels. Quits continued to be highly elevated, helping to buoy the separations figures and contrasting with some normalization seen after the run-up seen earlier in the year. In December, quits in the accommodation and foodservice industry ticked up from 699,000 to 706,000, the highest since June. Likewise, but to a lesser extent, quits for all nonfarm sectors edged up from 3.19 million to 3.20 million, also a 6-month high. The recent surge in quits in November and December are curious, and we will see if future data return to the normalization seen over the summer. Recent data have been consistent with the transition from the “Great Resignation” prevalent a few years ago to the current “Great Stay” period, which has been closer to pre-pandemic trends. For comparison, quits averaged 4.22 million for nonfarm payrolls and 787,000 for restaurants and lodging in 2022, when the labor market was historically tight and businesses struggled to find sufficient workers. In 2025, quits averaged 3.19 million and 620,000, respectively. U.S. nonfarm business job openings totaled 6.54 million in December, the lowest in 5 years. Meanwhile, there were 7.50 million unemployed individuals in December. Again, this is consistent with softening in the labor market. More importantly, it was the fourth time in the past five months with data that the number of unemployed workers exceeded available job openings, with a current gap of 961,000 workers. That is the largest gap since March 2021, with 1.15 unemployed workers for every one job opening. This should make it easier for restaurants to find candidates. For perspective, the labor market was considerably tighter in July 2022, when job openings outnumbered unemployed individuals by 2-to-1. At that time, there were just 49.7 unemployed workers for every 100 job openings, with a surplus of more than 5.84 million job postings relative to job seekers.
