If your website isn’t generating leads, the root causes are rarely complicated. They’re consistent, and not difficult to fix. In 20+ years of reviewing B2B websites, I keep seeing the same issues come up again and again. It’s easy to think your situation is unique, but when it comes to underperforming websites, the patterns are surprisingly predictable: 1. You’re attracting the right audience, just not enough of them. Not everyone is ready to buy. Without enough volume, even a strong site won’t generate meaningful leads. 2. You’re not attracting the right people at all. Traffic is useless if it’s the wrong buyers. 3. Your website doesn’t instill trust. People do business with those they know, like, and trust. If prospects don’t believe you’re credible, they won’t engage. 4. Your website feels trustworthy, but isn’t persuasive. Trustworthiness and compelling are not the same thing. If you're not leveraging behavioral psychology to influence your prospects towards action, most won't act at all. 5. You’re lacking calls to action, or your CTAs don’t inspire action. Poorly targeted calls to action are just as ineffective as no calls to action at all. I'm speaking with more and more with prospects who really aren't clear about what SEO is or does. Let's dispel some rumors, shall we? The goal of SEO is to get your business to show up at the top of Google for terms people are searching for related to your business. If your SEO can succeed at this, they have done their job. The starting point is to understand the business and the owner's goals. Some owners are totally unrealistic. They think that being at the top of google for 'vanity' search terms will make their business 'pop'. It won't. Once a search engine optimization consultant understands your business and your goals, they will start doing keyword research to find out which search terms related to your business get what amount of traffic. Keywords related to your business that get a high amount of traffic should be investigated. For what? Search intent. What does this mean, in plain English? If someone searches for "autism in North Carolina", they may be a student looking for stats for a paper. If a parent searches for "Will Medicaid pay for my child's ABA Therapy?". Guess what- that person is looking for ABA Therapy for their child, and wants to find out how to pay for it. Your business's SEO has to match search intent for people looking to hire you or buy from you, whichever the case may be.
