U.S School District Sports Field Access - A Paradox of Plenty A recent fight between a Northern California girls softball league and a little league over a sports field highlights the perceived sports field shortage by most leagues and coaches --but in reality within a 5 mile range of Lafayette, California-there are an estimated 30 high quality baseball fields mostly in school districts that would be suitable for softball or baseball that are mostly not used. Counterintuitively, through cost, insurance & process limitations, access to most U.S. school district facilities is extremely limited since most states funding does not consider public access to school facilities as part of their funding criteria-so school facility access is a cost center that needs to be carefully managed and limited by the school districts facility managers. However, some school districts like Oakland California are recognizing that sports culture reduces truancy and which is a funding benchmark for the school district. At a recent Project Play presentation in Berkeley, the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) shared a promising development: youth sports aren’t just good for kids—they’re becoming a part of school funding strategies. With California’s education funding model increasingly tied to attendance and academic outcomes, OUSD has recognized that athletic participation reduces truancy and boosts student performance. These metrics directly impact how much state funding a district receives. In OUSD middle schools alone, according to Project Play, participation in sports more than doubled from 17% to 45%, contributing to reduced truancy and better academic results. Oakland Unified School District has already taken the first step by recognizing the link between sports and school success. Now it’s time to fully embrace the power of open access, community-led play, and smarter facility management. By doing so, schools districts can drive reduce truancy and improve test scores while increasing their state funding for their district —by providing low cost easy access to their public funded sports facilities to local leagues and families. https://lnkd.in/gs4Hz9xB

I just commented on Dr. Umer Khan’s informative post about Siri’s painful message to a woman who underwent a recent biopsy. This is a losing fight that I continue to engage in because, in my view, it goes to the heart of AI and large language models. I hope you find my post useful. If so, please let me know. I’VE TRIED to keep Siri and other applications from listening to me and it turned out to be a reliably unreliable process. On one occasion, I accidentally hit my big toe on my bed’s leg and burst out with language more suitable for an angry sailor. Siri responded with “I don’t respond to that kind of language!” And thus I learned it had been listening all along! We have lost control of AI’s growing intrusions into our lives. There are too many vectors to control and nearly unlimited combinations of them, so that individually and collectively, they have ended all semblance of privacy as we once knew it. It would have been different if, from the beginning, regulations had required all apps to be free of AI involvement by default. Users would have had to enabled them and could disable them at will. Unfortunately for privacy advocates, that ship has sailed beyond the horizon. As I continue to point out, in a human sense, AI knows nothing, understands nothing, has no values, wisdom, ethics, or other human qualities. We must start by recognizing what these technologies are not, so we won’t be shocked when they don’t display qualities that they do not, cannot, and have never possed. It’s shocking, but it turns out that when we need human understanding, we still have to engage with other humans! BTW: Doctors should celebrate AI’s limitations. In their absence, Dr. AI would be replacing many if not most across our healthcare econsystem. Think about it! That’s because, year after year, the ZS Future of Health Report shows the degree to which hassle dissuades consumers from accessing the healthcare they need. In the 2025 report, a majority of respondents across all seven countries we surveyed said they avoid medical care due to inconvenience—easily outpacing cost as a barrier in the U.S., U.K., Germany, India and Japan.   Helping people schedule appointments within their insurer’s member portal is a no-regret move that will build trust, reduce hassle and get more people through healthcare’s front door.

2025 was a very successful and productive year regarding our impact in South LA. We had 1000s of attendees, we gave away over 100+ computers to kids and teens who needed them, and our youth developed a few hundred apps from scratch.
