One of the most interesting ideas in robotics is Moravec’s Paradox: the things humans find hard (math, chess, strategy) are relatively easy for machines, while the things we find effortless (walking through a crowd, navigating a sidewalk, reading social cues) are extremely hard for robots. It sounds counterintuitive until you realize how much evolution has optimized human perception and motor coordination. Millions of years of adaptation went into the subconscious abilities we take for granted. That’s why the real frontier in robotics isn’t reasoning, it’s operating safely in messy human environments. A great illustration of this comes from Wendy Ju’s recent talk on trash-can robots navigating the streets of New York City. On paper the task seems trivial: move a trash bin along a sidewalk. In reality it becomes a complex human-robot interaction problem. Pedestrians behave unpredictably, sidewalks are shared social spaces, and people constantly rely on subtle cues to negotiate movement with each other. Autonomy is not just an engineering challenge. 🚀 Gravity Panda – AI Meets Robotics Excited to share a project from our AI & Robotics Lab where we built a robotic system capable of detecting and catching a ball autonomously. The system combines YOLO-based object detection, ARUCO marker calibration, and motion planning using KOMO within the Robotics Framework by Marc Toussaint. This allowed us to translate camera data into robot world coordinates and generate precise, collision-aware movements to catch the ball.
