📊 2.8 billion people worldwide cannot afford a healthy diet. A new study outlines why current food security metrics may be limiting our understanding of why this is the case. A new Nature Food paper by Anna Herforth, Yan Bai, Aishwarya Venkat and William A. Masters uses the Healthy Diet Basket (HDB), a tool developed by the United Nations and The World Bank, to measure the Cost and Affordability of a Healthy Diet (CoAHD) worldwide. Key findings: • The HDB cost averaged US$3.68 per person per day in 2021, slightly lower than most national dietary guidelines. 💵 • Macronutrients and micronutrients fell within healthy ranges when following the HDB, with a 95% adequacy ratio for protein and 15 micronutrients. 🍎 • The carbon and water footprints of HDB diets were similar to the EAT-Lancet reference diet, about half that of current consumption. 🌍 • In low-income and lower-middle-income countries, people spend less on food than the least-cost healthy diet because they do not have sufficient income to afford a healthy diet. 📉 The study highlights a persistent gap in how food security and poverty are measured. Current poverty lines are based on meeting energy needs, not the full cost of a healthy diet, leaving many of the people classified as “non-poor” unable to afford the foods needed for an active, healthy life. The authors say that this challenge cannot be solved by nutrition education alone, instead agricultural investments must prioritize the foods most recommended (but often missing) from people’s diets. Rethinking B12: Plant-Based Sources and Bioavailability 🌱 Vitamin B12 deficiency remains one of the most common nutritional gaps in plant-based diets. While animal products have been the traditional source, plant-forward solutions are gaining ground. 📊 B12 content per 100g (dry weight): Nori: 23–53 µg (true bioactive B12) Chlorella: up to 445.9 µg (in supplement form) Shiitake mushroom: ~5.6 µg Fortified nutritional yeast: 1–4 µg / serving Fortified plant milk: 0.4–1.5 µg / 100 mL Fermented foods: <1 µg (mostly inactive analogues) 🔸 Evidence supports nori and fortified foods as effective, sustainable sources for maintaining healthy B12 status. 🔸 Fermented foods and some mushrooms, while nutritious, offer unreliable or low bioavailable B12. 🌍 Reliable plant-based B12 strategies are essential as more populations shift to climate-friendly diets.
