The ocean will finally be protected beyond borders. After nearly two decades of negotiations, the landmark High Seas Treaty officially goes into effect today. For the first time ever, there is now a global legal framework to protect biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of the areas of the ocean that are beyond national jurisdiction. Countries will now begin the critical work of implementation, including planning for the first meeting of the treaty’s decision-making body and laying the groundwork for new marine protected areas. The treaty also supports global momentum toward broader biodiversity goals, including the international pledge to protect 30% of the world’s land and ocean by 2030. But the work has only just begun—the more countries that join the treaty, the more effective it will be. You can help by calling on your leaders to take action. Via @atmos Instagram
